  1. Rodney in 8 appearances has 3 blown saves along with losing a tied game in the 9th. When your closer is a disaster in half his appearances it's time to think about making a change.
  2. If the Twins get Bard back he wouldn't be on the 40 man roster and he would go to AAA. Why would the Twins not want to take back a relief pitcher who has real upside when the cost is virtually nothing in terms of money or roster spots?
  3. The Twins looking to make the playoffs and keeping Kinley on the roster don't seem like moves with the same goal. Kinley remaining on the roster is a mystery to me since a single extra win could be important at the end of the year. I'd much rather see the Twins utilize the last roster spot on someone who might actually contribute. The Angels, who we are directly competing with for a wild card spot, have already waived Luke Bard who was a more useful player than Kinley.
  4. Not protecting Luke Bard in the rule 5 draft made sense. The decisions on Burdi and Chargois are more concerning. To me it would have been a significantly better move to add Burdi to the 40-man roster and option Chargois to the minors. The Twins could currently have Burdi on the 60-day DL (opening up his 40-man roster spot) and have Chargois at AAA. In addition the Twins would have been able to utilize the last 25-man roster spot for a player that could actually contribute. Basically, the Twins could have had 2 high upside relievers (Burdi and Chargois) still in the organization while freeing an additional 25-man roster spot, instead they chose Kinley.
  5. Amazingly good results for the starters, especially when 2 out of the top 3 starters (Santana and Lynn) haven't taken the mound yet. The pitching staff is looking like the best group the Twins have had in a very long time.
  6. The best option would be for waived players to either become free agents or to be claimed by a team willing to give them a real chance (where they won't be waived again immediately). The current waiver process where guys can be waived multiple times effectively placing them in limbo for a long stretch can really hurt fringe guys like Vargas.
  7. I wish MLB would make a change so that teams couldn't claim players and then turn around and waive them again within a couple of weeks (which the Vargas situation looks like). A team that claims a player off of waivers should have to keep them on the 40 man roster (or 25 man roster if out of options) for a reasonable length of time. It doesn't seem fair to the player to spend an extended time repeatedly going through the waiver process.
  8. My prediction is that Hughes will be waived at the same time that Santana comes off the DL. I'm guessing Hughes will be pretty much the same pitcher he's been the last couple of years, by that I mean he'll be a 5+ ERA guy who throws 88-90. After 4-5 starts it will be clear there is no chance he'll ever be a capable major league pitcher again.
  9. Something in camp must have indicated that Chargois had a significant problem, otherwise I can't see any reason why they would keep Kinley over him. In terms of upside (and some moderate success in a brief 2016 stint with the Twins) Chargois has been regarded as a substantially better prospect, so without some unknown issue waiving him makes very little sense to me.
  10. The Darvish situation was an almost unprecedented alignment of team need, personal connections, resources available, and limited competition (Dodgers, Yankees, and Rangers all unwilling to spend the required money). If the Twins were unable to succeed in this scenario, I can't see time in the future where things will ever be more conducive to signing a top free agent, meaning I highly doubt Minnesota will ever compete for top talent.
  11. The move makes perfect sense. I'll be curious to see if he stays in the organization. The Twins will have Moya and Jay ready for a shot at a left handed reliever role next season, so I could see Boshers moving on.
  12. It seems pretty clear that Duke and Rogers will be the lefties in the bullpen with Moya next in line at AAA. I believe Boshers is out of options meaning he is basically gone already, so the Twins might as well waive him now. Next up would be Kinley. I don't think he has any real chance to beat out Pressly or Duffey (or a healthy Chargois).
  13. Over half way through their second off-season and to date the new Twins front office has essentially signed one mid-tier free agent to multiyear deal (Castro). The only other free agents to sign major league deals were a few non-inspiring relievers (Belisle, Rodney, and Duke) and a TJ rehab pitcher (Pineda is unlikely to contribute this season so I count his deal as a one year deal for next season). I had real hope the Twins would make better use of free agency when Falvey/Levine took over, but that hope is getting pretty dim.
  14. I think a super bullpen is beyond our reach, I'd be ecstatic if we can piece together an average bullpen next season (after having a bullpen with ERAs ranked in the 20s for the last 4 years).
  15. I saw an article by LaVelle that said it could be weeks or up to a month before Darvish decides. So far, Darvish has been holding up most of the starting pitcher market, but If it takes that long I'm beginning to wonder if the other upper end free agents (Arrieta, Lynn, and Cobb) will find deals before then. I can already see the scenario playing out where the Twins are waiting for Darvish while the rest of the free agent pitching options disappear, only to be the runner up in the Darvish sweepstakes.
  16. Darvish needs to make a decision, he's holding up the majority of the free agent market for starting pitching.
  17. Angels have re-signed Upton while adding Kinsler, Cozart, and Ohtani. Add in a healthy Trout and I think it's fair to say that they've separated themselves from the Twins going into next season.
  18. I'm not too concerned about them trying to stash him, I think the chances he's still here on opening day are minimal. The issue I have is that Minnesota had 4 open roster spots and now 2 of them have been used on players unlikely to help this season (Kinley and Pineda). With one open roster spot left, the Twins still need a starter and could also use a backup catcher, reliever, and bench bat. Clearly there are guys who can be removed from the 40 man roster, but is Kinley better than Boshers or Enns?
  19. The thing that worries me about drafting Kinley is the roster spot. Burning a roster spot on a guy with a very low probability of contributing next season tells me the front office didn't see a better option for the spot. That's unfortunate because the gap between the Twins and teams like the Yankees and Angels has grown substantially and Minnesota needs to be adding guys who can improve the team.
  20. This off-seasons approach to relief pitching almost exactly mirrors last off-season. Wait out the market while the middle relief pool is exhausted then pick up a guy out of the bargain bin. The most surprising thing to me is that it became clear over the course of last season that adding a better reliever in free agency could have had a pretty substantial impact. To repeat the exact same mistake twice leaves me frustrated.
  21. Yankees add Stanton, Angels add Ohtani/Kinsler, and Twins add Rodney. So far this off-season Minnesota has fallen way behind our closest competition in the standings.
  22. So, it looks like Rodney's is our big relief pitcher acquisition. Even my worst case scenarios going into free agency were nowhere near this bad.
  23. This is really starting to remind me of last off-season. I kept waiting for the Twins to sign a decent reliever only to watch as every moderately good option went off the board. It was a mistake then and it's looking more and more like the mistake will be repeated.
  24. On the trade front, it looks like Raisel Iglesias isn't happening. Sounds like the Reds asking price was just too high.
  25. There's been a run on relievers, so hopefully the Twins can get something done before the market is picked clean. Looking at the MLB trade rumors list of top free agents the availability of second tier relievers is getting a bit thin. By top 50 ranking the relievers are: 8. Davis 10. Holland 16. Reed 18. Minor - TEX 2/$18.5M 19. Morrow - CHC 2/$21M 24. Nicasio - SEA 2/$?M 25. Shaw - COL 3/$27M 30. McGee - COL 3/$27M 36. Swarzak - NYM 2/$14M 37. Cishek 38. Kintzler 41. Hunter - PHI 2/$18M 43. Neshek - PHI 2/$16.3M 44. Watson 47. Tillman Honorable Mention. Smith Honorable Mention. Rodney EDIT: Smith to HOU, so one more off the board
