  1. I'm starting to seriously wonder if this is Mauer's last season, his OPS is trending downward and with a few more poor games it will be under .700. I wouldn't be surprised to see him call it a career at the end of the year rather than to try to hang on for one more season.
  2. I was hoping for some small indications that Santana was getting his velocity back, but I'm just not seeing it. I think Santana would have some trade value if he could consistently throw 90-91 instead of 88-89.
  3. Coming into the season I had largely written off Stewart as a prospect, but he did show improvement in his strikeout rate which was always his most glaring weakness. He's actually got a better SO/BB rate than Romero, Gonsalves, and Littell in the minors this season, so it seems like he's figured something out. I'll be curious to see how his stuff translates to the majors and hope he gets a real opportunity (I'd rather not see another make one start and get demoted scenario like we've seen all season from the Twins).
  4. Interesting, I didn't know that using an option doesn't count if it was a short stay in the minors.
  5. I believe both Duffey and Austin are out of options for next season, so they will either have to make the 25 man roster next season or be let go. Makes sense to give them an extended look to help make decisions this off-season.
  6. Between the Johan Santana and Delmon Young trades Bill Smith really had a bad start to his tenure as GM.
  7. He either needs to go on the 60 day DL or be released. Either way he shouldn't pitch again for the Twins.
  8. What will happen first, Belisle's ERA with the Twins goes over 10 or he gets released?
  9. Mauer isn't going anywhere and probably the best return the Twins could get on Morrison would be to get out of $500-750K of his salary.
  10. I'd guess Gordon's struggles at AAA are a combination of running out of gas and facing a new level where the pitching is more experienced and able to exploit weaknesses. I don't really have any concerns about him at this point, if he is still struggling next season at AAA then I'll start to worry.
  11. That was a really nice inning for Twins hitters, until Rosario makes an inexplicable base-running mistake.
  12. That was some extremely poor ABs in the first inning by the Twins. Three SOs on pitches out of the strike zone.
  13. I'm not sure there really is much cost involved. The Twins can waive both of them today if they decide they can make a better use of the 40 man roster spots. The claims cost minimal money and don't limit flexibility going forward, so I don't really see an issue. If they stay on the 40 man roster when it's time for September call-ups then I'll be concerned.
  14. I look at these additions as why not type of moves. The Twins had 2 open spots on the 40 man roster and rather than leaving them empty claimed a couple of placeholder guys. I seriously doubt either Drake or Field will be on the 40 man roster in a few weeks.
  15. I'd like to see playing time decisions that reflect a developmental mindset from the organization. The primary objective should be to determine which guys are ready to be part of the major league club next season. 1) Call up Duffey and Austin since they are out of options and we need to figure out if they fit going forward. 2) Have Romero replace Santana in the rotation and Busenitz replace Belisle in the bullpen. 3) Add Gordon, Wade, Alcala, and Jay to the roster and bring them up for September (they have to be added for next season anyways). 4) Trade or waive Astudillo, Morrison, Grossman, Forsythe, and Belisle. 5) Give Littell, Gonsalves, and Thorpe (maybe Stewart?) a few starts each to get their feet wet. 6) Decide which relievers out of Anderson, Reed, Bard, and Curtiss to keep and call them up in Sept. 7) Start Garver at C in 70% of the remaining games.
  16. Overall the trades made were fairly minor in nature. Littell and Moya look to have a chance to contribute for the Twins which is about all you can ask for when dealing away players on expiring contracts and fringe prospects. The one big criticism I have of the front office is their handling of the high upside relievers they inherited. I think it was a mistake to let guys like Randy Rosario, Nick Burdi, and JT Chargois go for nothing.
  17. Great write up. Your grades match almost exactly with my own thoughts on the trades. The only one I might have graded differently was the Duke trade (I might have went with a B ), mainly because I never expected to get anything of value back. If the Dodgers offer was the best available, I would have much preferred to keep Brian and see where things stood at the end of the year in terms of a qualifying offer.
  18. Adrianza looks a bit lost at 2B. He's had a couple of mental mistakes tonight that have given the Indians extra outs.
  19. Didn't Reed's fastball sit around 92 mph earlier in the season? Throwing 89-90 mph is a little concerning.
  20. It would be really nice to have JT Chargois or Randy Rosario (or soon Nick Burdi) instead of Belisle. Maybe the Pirates will stay in contention and send Burdi back when he comes off the DL in a couple of weeks.
  21. If the Twins are keeping Belisle due to his locker-room presence, maybe they should just make him some sort of assistant coach instead of letting him continue to blow games.
  22. Belisle fulfilling his role of making sure the Twins lose games.
  23. The Twins really need to stop throwing pitches over the plate to Ramirez.
  24. It's interesting that for all the guys that the Twins acquired the last few days there wasn't a single catcher. It seems like getting a AA or AAA catching prospect would have been high on the wish list since we have virtually nothing at either level.
