  1. Calling the bullpen a little shaky is being incredibly generous.
  2. I'd say the Twins should option Hildenberger, but I don't think there is much of anyone at AAA/AA to call up.
  3. One thing today's game clearly showed is that if Rogers, Parker, and May are unavailable there is no one left in the bullpen that should be pitching in the 9th inning of even remotely close games.
  4. It really sounds like Addison Reed is done. His fastball was in the 80s in Spring Training and he was getting pounded. He then had an injury to his non-throwing hand and started the season on the IL. It's now seven weeks later and he's still throwing in the 80s. So far during his rehab stint at AAA he's been truly terrible with a 13.5 ERA and a .524 BA against. I've pretty much lost any hope that he will contribute anything at the major league level this season.
  5. I'd say Parker does a pretty good impression of the Fernando Rodney Experience. He is able to find success, but it too often feels like he's right on the edge of something bad happening.
  6. Parker on the mound in close games always makes me nervous. I really hope the Twins acquire a better late inning reliever.
  7. I'm expecting Sano to take over the 5 spot in the order at some point in the next week.
  8. Twins clutch hitting has been pretty awful this home-stand. In the 6 games (including tonight) the Twins are hitting 9-47 (.191) with RISP.
  9. I'm guessing this is one of the last games we'll see Cave and/or Adrianza (at least until someone goes on the IL). With Astudillo back today and Sano likely back next week there just isn't roster space. Since the team will be playing every day I'm also guessing another reliever will be added fairly soon as well. I'm really looking forward to a bench of Garver/Castro, Astudillo, and Gonzalez.
  10. The Twins have scored 6 runs without hitting particularly well with runners in scoring position. Hopefully they are saving the clutch hitting for games when it matters.
  11. Cruz with 10 men left on base, not something I can remember seeing in a box score.
  12. I think another factor that works against Adrianza is the return of Nick Gordon. I think that the Twins are going to be willing to DFA Adrianza and let Gonzalez be the emergency shortstop, with Gordon coming up to fill in if Polanco is going to be out for multiple games. My guess is that within the next couple of weeks both Astudillo and Sano will be back, resulting in Cave being optioned and Adrianza DFAd.
  13. Out of the things the Twins could do to improve, adding to the bench is nowhere near the top of the priority list. I'd say that the clear need is to add another reliable late inning arm to the bullpen. Right now I don't have a lot of faith in the guys behind Rogers, Parker, Hildenberger and possibly May. A couple of close games in a row where the bullpen needs to cover 3-4 innings could easily lead to having to throw Magill or Harper into high leverage situations. I'd say starting pitching depth is the next biggest need. Pineda has been fairly shaky so far and I wouldn't be surprised to see a IL stint in his near future. Unfortunately, the AAA starters that I was hoping would provide depth have been pretty poor so far. None of Thorpe, Stewart, or Littell are making a case for promotion and Gonsalves still hasn't made an appearance.
  14. The most obvious move when Sano returns is to send Cave to AAA. Cave hasn't played well enough this year to require a roster spot and Gonzalez might actually be a better choice as the reserve corner outfielder since he can bat right handed. I see Sano being the ever-day third baseman when he returns and Gonzalez shifting to the super-utility role off the bench.
  15. I'm not sure what's wrong with Gonzalez, but he looks completely over-matched at the plate.
  16. While it's true that the Twins pitcher development has had problems for years, the prospects often still did reasonably well at AAA. The thing that worries me about this season is it seems like almost every pitcher on the Rochester roster has an inflated ERA. The only guys on the AAA staff with an ERA under 4 are Morin (0.00) and Duffey (1.50), with only Romero (4.32) and Eades (4.26) staying under 5. Everyone else has an ERA larger than 5 (most significantly higher than 5.00).
  17. I'm beginning to get a bit concerned about the coaching at AAA. Virtually every pitcher at Rochester has been terrible so far, and every one called up has been a disaster for the Twins. A few pitchers at a level struggling is expected, but when it is the whole staff you have to wonder if there is a problem with the pitching coach.
  18. I don't think there's any question that 3B is his as soon as he's ready. Gonzalez made his case for being an everyday player and so far his .470 OPS has made clear he is best suited to a role as a super utility role off the bench.
  19. The Twins bullpen was able to find success when the schedule had frequent off days that allowed the team to utilize Rogers/Parker/Hildenberger/May whenever they needed. Now that the team is playing every day the bullpen's lack of depth is getting exposed. Putting Mejia, Harper, or any of the Rochester call-ups on the mound in close games has not worked out well for the team. Adding Kimbrel would go a long ways to shoring up a bullpen with limited late inning options.
  20. Gonzalez OPS is now under .500 on what is getting harder to call a small sample size.
  21. The Twins bullpen reinforcements from Rochester have left a lot to be desired. De Jong, Vasquez, Duffey, and sadly Romero have all had major problems at the major league level.
  22. Angel Hernandez is the poster child for automating the calling of balls and strike. He has absolutely no consistency behind the plate.
  23. Twins bullpen vs Astros bullpen is about as lopsided a competition as it gets.
  24. Twins bullpen with 41 walks in 72 innings so far this season. That's not a recipe for success.
  25. Twins relievers are walking guys at a dangerous rate so far this season.
