  1. Does resolving the DFA require Vargas to be traded or go through waivers? I can't imagine MLB would leave open a loophole that would allow a player to be DFAd and then re-added back to the active roster (that would seem to let teams effectively expand rosters and hold onto out of option players by temporarily parking them in DFA limbo).
  2. Vargas is out of options, so there was no place for him to go once he was taken off the active roster.
  3. I can't see how the DFA could be reversed. Donaldson already took Vargas's active roster spot, so I would assume the transaction is final.
  4. I don't think Smeltzer is a guy where options are a significant concern. At this point he's on the fringes of the majors and is going to need to improve to stay in the league.
  5. The guys expected to make up the Twins bench have been ridiculously bad this season. In terms of OPS Wade (.467), Adrianza (.513), Cave (.529), Gonzalez (.608), Vargas (.613), and Avila (.627) are killing the team. There needs to be a major overhaul with prospects Kirilloff, Rooker, Jeffers, and maybe even Blankenhorn taking over spots.
  6. If the Twins send down both Cave/Wade and only use Gonzalez at 2B/3B then there is plenty of opportunity for both Kirilloff and Rooker. I could see Kirilloff playing most days while giving Buxton/Rosario/Kepler/Sano a rest with Rooker starting against lefties (and being a right handed bat off the bench).
  7. I am anxiously awaiting the day when none of Adrianza/Gonzalez/Vargas/Cave are in the lineup.
  8. Since the Twins passed on making any upgrades at the trade deadline they need to bring up at least a couple of the prospects to boost the bench. So far this year the Cave, Wade, Adrianza, and Vargas group has been beyond awful. With Buxton back, I'd send down both Cave/Wade, release one of Adrianza/Vargas, and only use Gonzalez on the infield. Bring up Kirilloff and Rooker with Alex playing most days to rest Buxton/Rosario/Kepler/Sano and Brent playing against lefties (and being a right handed bench bat).
  9. I am really starting to believe that James Rowson was a lot more valuable than I could have ever imagined. When pretty much every hitter outside of Cruz and Sano has been worse than last season it gets harder and harder to explain away the drop-off.
  10. Larnach probably won't get a shot due to off-season roster space concerns (he doesn't need to be added). I think Kirilloff and Rooker are the two that should be called up. This team is desperate for some sort of spark so why not give them a chance. They are almost certain to be better hitters than Cave, Wade, and Gonzalez.
  11. Much like the Twins did with their bullpen in the middle of last season, I'm hoping the team does a major overhaul of their bench. A bench of Gonzalez, Kirilloff, Rooker, Blankenhorn, and Jeffers would have the potential to be a big step up from Gonzalez, Adrianza, Vargas, Cave, Wade, and Avila.
  12. Hopefully this means we'll see some of the prospects get a chance. Of the guys on the 40-man roster or those who need to be added after the season I'd definitely look at giving Kirilloff, Rooker, Blankenhorn, and Duran a chance. They likely wouldn't be worse than Cave, Wade, Adrianza, Vargas, or repeated bullpen games.
  13. I'm doubtful that Lewis or Larnach get added to the 40 man roster since neither of them are rule 5 eligible this off-season. Kirilloff and Rooker are the guys that I'd like to see get a chance since they can't be worse than Cave/Wade have been (and they have to be added to the 40 man after the season anyway).
  14. I'd love it if the Twins could pull off a similar deal to the Padre's for a top of the rotation starter. That deal was roughly equivalent to giving up 3 prospects from the Cavaco, Javier, Enlow, Canterino, and Rooker tier and 3 players like Cave, Wade, Smeltzer, Thorpe, and Astudillo.
  15. The guy that I'd go after is Robbie Ray. Put him in the bullpen and let him work with Wes Johnson (or let him start if Odorizzi/Hill/Bailey can't stay healthy). If his issues can be fixed he would be an interesting option for the play-offs either starting or out of the pen.
  16. I'd go with Kirilloff, he can play some 1B as well as filling in as the fourth outfielder.
  17. I believe he will still will have rule 5 restrictions going into next season. I'm not sure that I've ever seen a rule 5 guy who hasn't made it to 90 days on the active roster 3 seasons after being drafted.
  18. The Twins should definitely give him a shot, it's not like Smeltzer/Thorpe are making it a tough call.
  19. Dobnak is saving the Twins over the first part of the season. It's hard to believe the team is 10-2 and has gotten a grand total of 10 innings out of Odorizzi/Hill/Bailey (and Pineda).
  20. Coming into the season I thought the Twins had great starting pitcher depth, and unfortunately at 10 games into the season we have already seen our #8 starter (Thorpe) on the mound. So far this year Dobnak has been a massively important part of the team, without him stepping up the Twins rotation would be close to desperation mode.
  21. Rogers showing no rust with a totally dominant inning.
  22. Arraez batting lead off just makes so much sense. I'm hoping the Twins move him there permanently.
  23. While watching Hill it doesn't seem like he's dominating, but then you realize he's pitched 5 innings with the opposing team never even having a guy in scoring position.
  24. I'm expecting to see Romo and Rogers tonight since neither pitched in the White Sox series.
  25. Bailey with 4 great innings and managed to survive the 5th. His control really started to fade that last inning which seems like a common occurrence for starters this first week. Definitely should be done for the night.
