It's tough to negotiate a trade when everybody knows the Twins pretty much have to make a deal. I'll be curious to see if the front office can work out a fair trade, or if we are going to have to significantly overpay due to an extremely poor bargaining position.
So at the moment, the Twins are pretty much the same team as last year except for holes at 1B and two spots in the rotation (which is actually 3 spots in the rotation for the first 40 games). So far this has been one of the most disappointing off-seasons I can remember. I had hopes of the team taking a big step forward, while the reality is looking more and more like it will be a small step backwards.
I can't say I'm overly concerned about the Twins missing out on any single player, but missing out on pretty much every free agent starting pitcher that would be an upgrade over last season hurts. The Twins currently have 2 legitimate starters for the first 40 games, which is not an acceptable position to be in at this point in the off-season.
I'm a bit surprised that Jax didn't get selected in the Rule 5 draft. Overall the Twins did a great job in determining who to add and who to leave off the 40 man roster.
I'll be curious to see if the 26th roster spot causes any noticeable change in terms of guys who get protected. Having an extra spot would seem to make holding onto guys who shouldn't be in the majors a lot easier for teams that aren't trying to compete. I would specifically be looking at high upside younger guys who are clearly a couple of years away (Celestino and Javier are prime Twins examples).
I think the Twins almost have to protect high upside guys like Chalmers, Javier, and Celestino. There are way too many MLB teams who aren't really trying to compete and seem like they would be willing to draft and hold onto high-risk/high-reward players in the hopes of stealing talent that could really be good a couple years down the road.
Gonsalves is the only move I somewhat question, everything else seemed like obvious moves to make. Hopefully the Twins are confident that they have a good plan for Gonsalves 40 man spot.
I doubt the Twins want to go into the season with more than 1 of Dobnak/Smeltzer/Thorpe in the rotation. I would guess Minnesota is going to sign at least one cheap vet SP who they believe has some upside to compete for the 4th or 5th spot in the rotation. Hopefully the Twins add at least 3 proven starters who are significantly better than Perez this off-season and only the 5th spot in the rotation is up for grabs.
Before last season's injuries he looked ready to be a back of the rotation option. I'm going to be curious to see who the Twins think is more deserving of a 40 man roster spot.
The Twins are making decisions that make sense today. If necessary I believe the Twins can easily replace Perez and his 5.12 ERA for less than $7M, but I'm hoping that the Twins end up adding significantly better starting pitching options this off-season.
I think what the front office does this off-season will have a bigger impact on fan enthusiasm for next year. If the team makes a big splash in free agency I could easily see interest in the team going up. The interesting thing is the team has a fairly massive amount of money to spend, especially if they raise payroll to what it probably should be. Landing a few top end free agents would go a long way towards convincing fans the team is committed to winning.
Rogers finally gets to make a meaningful pitch in the series. I guess Rocco decided to make sure that he actually gets to use his best relievers in a game.
Polanco is about the only Twin who is playing great in the field and actually hitting. There haven't been many other bright spots so far in this series.
Through 3 innings the Twins have 4 hits and 2 walks which should mean at least 1 run, but somehow the team has managed to choke away every opportunity.
Gonzalez strikes out swinging at a pitch out of the strike zone and Cave follows up by watching strike three. That was as awful a showing with the bases loaded as I can remember.
I think the Twins can get up to $135-140M in payroll by re-signing Odorizzi/Romo, signing a top end starter like Gerrit Cole, and adding a high end reliever like Will Smith. This is truly the off-season where the front office needs to go all-in and actually spend on top end talent. Any remaining money can go towards extensions for Berrios/Buxton/Sano/May.
I don't think the Twins spend anything on free agents for the line-up, they just bring back everyone but Schoop and Castro. For pitching they really need to spend major money on a top of the rotation free agent starter and a high-end free agent reliever. I also see them re-signing Odorizzi (after sticking him with a qualifying offer) and Romo (on a 1 year deal) while declining to bring back Dyson and Perez. Starting lineup: C - Garver 1B - Cron 2B - Arraez SS - Polanco 3B - Sano RF - Kepler CF - Buxton LF - Rosario DH - Cruz Bench: IF/OF - Gonzalez IF - Gordon OF - Cave C - Astudillo Starters: Berrios FA signing Odorizzi (re-signed) Dobnak Graterol Relievers: Rogers FA signing Duffey May Romo (re-signed) Littell Stashak Romero
You use the bottom of the bullpen when there there is a bigger separation in the score or when the top guys are unavailable. In last night's game, the score was within 1 run and the top bullpen arms were all well rested and available. I would much rather use my top bullets to keep a close game close than wait and hope the lesser arms can keep the game close (which they didn't and the top of the bullpen never got used).
Stashak is a rookie with questionable stuff who has pitched a total of 25 major league innings. It seems pretty clear to me he was not the guy you want on the mound in a 1 run playoff game.
