  1. Dozier is one of the most extreme hot/cold guys I can remember. He goes long stretches one way or the other and it's really painful when he's stuck in a month plus cold stretch.
  2. For the first time in 12 years (Santana/Liriano in 2006) I think the Twins might have a legitimate front of the rotation.
  3. I'd really like to see both Gordon and Wade get their first chance. It makes a lot more sense to me to give them development time than to give ABs to Grossman, Adrianza, LaMarre, or Petit. Gordon/Wade likely wouldn't stick in the majors, but they could get valuable experience while almost certainly not being worse than the guys that are currently playing.
  4. Twins bullpen 4-8 in win-loss record and 3-8 in saves vs save opportunities. It's going to be hard to be in the playoff race if our relief pitchers can't turn things around.
  5. I don't think Rodney or Duke are in any danger. The worst I could see happening is Rodney losing his exclusive closer role. Of the 6 bullpen guys I listed the only ones that are even remotely in question are Rogers/Hildenberg and based on their track records they are going to get a long leash.
  6. I really can't see Hughes making it to the All-Star break. He's almost certainly out of the rotation for good and is only likely to hang on to the long relief mop up roll until a couple of the young guys have success at the MLB level. The bullpen has 6 guys set (Rodney, Reed, Duke, Pressly, Hildenberger, and Rogers) leaving one or two spots. At some point a couple of guys out of Busenitz, Curtiss, Duffey, Moya, Reed, Anderson, Bard, and Baxendale will stick in the majors (not to mention May coming back).
  7. I think if the guys in the Twins bullpen were pitching better Hughes would be waived. Since the bullpen only has a couple of guys (Pressly and Reed) pitching well, Hughes will get a chance to show if he can be better than the other poorly performing bullpen options.
  8. I really liked what I saw from Romero, but he needs to get ahead in the count more often to have consistent success. He reminded me of Berrios in 2016, he obviously has great stuff, but needs trust it and throw strikes. Berrios also struggled a bit with being aggressive early in the count when he first came up.
  9. If the Twins get Bard back he wouldn't be on the 40 man roster and he would go to AAA. Why would the Twins not want to take back a relief pitcher who has real upside when the cost is virtually nothing in terms of money or roster spots?
  10. Not protecting Luke Bard in the rule 5 draft made sense. The decisions on Burdi and Chargois are more concerning. To me it would have been a significantly better move to add Burdi to the 40-man roster and option Chargois to the minors. The Twins could currently have Burdi on the 60-day DL (opening up his 40-man roster spot) and have Chargois at AAA. In addition the Twins would have been able to utilize the last 25-man roster spot for a player that could actually contribute. Basically, the Twins could have had 2 high upside relievers (Burdi and Chargois) still in the organization while freeing an additional 25-man roster spot, instead they chose Kinley.
  11. It seems pretty clear that Duke and Rogers will be the lefties in the bullpen with Moya next in line at AAA. I believe Boshers is out of options meaning he is basically gone already, so the Twins might as well waive him now. Next up would be Kinley. I don't think he has any real chance to beat out Pressly or Duffey (or a healthy Chargois).
  12. I think a super bullpen is beyond our reach, I'd be ecstatic if we can piece together an average bullpen next season (after having a bullpen with ERAs ranked in the 20s for the last 4 years).
  13. Darvish needs to make a decision, he's holding up the majority of the free agent market for starting pitching.
  14. I'm not too concerned about them trying to stash him, I think the chances he's still here on opening day are minimal. The issue I have is that Minnesota had 4 open roster spots and now 2 of them have been used on players unlikely to help this season (Kinley and Pineda). With one open roster spot left, the Twins still need a starter and could also use a backup catcher, reliever, and bench bat. Clearly there are guys who can be removed from the 40 man roster, but is Kinley better than Boshers or Enns?
  15. The thing that worries me about drafting Kinley is the roster spot. Burning a roster spot on a guy with a very low probability of contributing next season tells me the front office didn't see a better option for the spot. That's unfortunate because the gap between the Twins and teams like the Yankees and Angels has grown substantially and Minnesota needs to be adding guys who can improve the team.
  16. This off-seasons approach to relief pitching almost exactly mirrors last off-season. Wait out the market while the middle relief pool is exhausted then pick up a guy out of the bargain bin. The most surprising thing to me is that it became clear over the course of last season that adding a better reliever in free agency could have had a pretty substantial impact. To repeat the exact same mistake twice leaves me frustrated.
  17. Yankees add Stanton, Angels add Ohtani/Kinsler, and Twins add Rodney. So far this off-season Minnesota has fallen way behind our closest competition in the standings.
  18. So, it looks like Rodney's is our big relief pitcher acquisition. Even my worst case scenarios going into free agency were nowhere near this bad.
  19. This is really starting to remind me of last off-season. I kept waiting for the Twins to sign a decent reliever only to watch as every moderately good option went off the board. It was a mistake then and it's looking more and more like the mistake will be repeated.
  20. On the trade front, it looks like Raisel Iglesias isn't happening. Sounds like the Reds asking price was just too high.
  21. There's been a run on relievers, so hopefully the Twins can get something done before the market is picked clean. Looking at the MLB trade rumors list of top free agents the availability of second tier relievers is getting a bit thin. By top 50 ranking the relievers are: 8. Davis 10. Holland 16. Reed 18. Minor - TEX 2/$18.5M 19. Morrow - CHC 2/$21M 24. Nicasio - SEA 2/$?M 25. Shaw - COL 3/$27M 30. McGee - COL 3/$27M 36. Swarzak - NYM 2/$14M 37. Cishek 38. Kintzler 41. Hunter - PHI 2/$18M 43. Neshek - PHI 2/$16.3M 44. Watson 47. Tillman Honorable Mention. Smith Honorable Mention. Rodney EDIT: Smith to HOU, so one more off the board
  22. I've been relatively happy with the direction the franchise is moving since the new front office took over. With that said, it is way too early to say that Falvey and Levine are "crushing it". To me :"crushing it" would mean they've managed to assemble a team capable of legitimately competing in the playoffs. At this point the pitching staff is still quite a ways from being able to match up against the better teams in the league and seeing how this is addressed will be a big factor in evaluating the new regime. There are plenty of avenues to upgrade the pitching and at this point I'll take an optimistic wait and see perspective on the new front office.
  23. Sorry, I was mistaken. After reading the procedure closer it looks like the one game playoff only applies for the division champion. A wild card tie depends on the tie breaker criterion.
  24. I'm not an expert on the intricacies of the minor league playoff system, but I did find the following (http://www.milb.com/milb/standings/playoff_procedures.jsp?lid=117&sid=l117): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- International League playoff procedures Tie in the final standings If two teams finish the regular season in a tie for first place within their division and both teams will advance to the Governors' Cup playoffs, the teams will be considered division co-champions and the following tiebreaker format will be used to determine which team enters the postseason as the division champion and which will enter as the wild card. If only one team will advance to the Governors' Cup playoffs, the two teams shall play one game the next day after the regular season concludes to determine their final standing. The additional game will be considered an extension of the championship season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since Rochester and Lehigh Valley are tied for the wild card I take the above to mean there will be a one game playoff. Is that correct, or am I misreading the situation?
  25. Starting with the current 40 man roster (and guys on DL) I would break down the roster as follows: Pitchers returning (15): Berrios, Busenitz, Chargois. Duffey, Enns, Hildenberger, Hughes, Jorge, May, Mejia, Pressly, Rogers, Romero, Rosario, Santana Position players returning (11): Castro, Garver, Dozier, Escobar, Mauer, Polanco, Sano, Buxton, Granite, Kepler, Rosario Borderline players (7): Gibson, O'Rourke, Adrianza, Vielma, Palka, Grossman, Vargas Gone (9): Belisle, Boshers, Colon, Gee, Perkins, Santiago, Turley, Gimenez, Recker That would make 26 solid roster spots and I'm guessing 2 or 3 from the borderline list (one of Adrianza/Vielma and one or two of Grossman/Vargas/Palka). That would leave 11-12 spots for rule 5 eligible players. My guess at who gets added: Rule 5 players added to roster (11): Gonsalves, Stewart, Diaz, Thorpe, Littell, Curtis, Reed, Burdi, Moya, Sledgers, Bard I also expect to see Moya, Sledger, Bard, and Melotakis up this season and their performance will have an impact on the last roster spots for next season.
