I'd be fine with taking a shot on Giolito, but not at $20m. I don't think I'd go higher than $15m. Maybe tack on a $20m team option with $2m buyout or something, or at 150 innings the option vests or the buyout jumps to $5m. He's still guaranteed $17m, and if he bounces back we get rewarded with another year at a reasonable price for taking the risk, and he can still retry free agency at age 31.

Biggest Question for Twins this Offseason
chaderic20 replied to Trov's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Given the rise in popularity of Travis Kelce jerseys, I'm gonna say you're more likely to become president by dating Taylor Swift than vice versa. -
I think there's 0% chance of this. The Twins tried that years ago and it failed, so I doubt they have much appetite for trying again. And then there's this: Those pro teams have all already sold their broadcast rights to other entities, so they couldn't join until years down the road. And for the colleges, they don't even have control over their broadcast rights even if they wanted to partner with the Twins, which I don't know why they would. Gophers for sure wouldn't, they will get $80-$100m per year from the B1G's media rights deal, and I doubt any new RSN the Twins try to start up could even come remotely close to offering that much.

As for the crowd and the energy at the stadium. I think for the past 19 years, our doubts have outweighed our hope and belief. Whether due to injury, or intimidation (facing the Evil Empire), or whatever. But I think this year, fans' hopes and belief in this team, outweighs the doubt. We dare to hope this year. We dare to get emotionally invested. We dare to believe we not only can, but will, win.

I feel like it'd be best for both Buxton and the Twins if he just shut it down for the year. Even when "healthy" this season, he's been nothing but a liability, as much as I hate to say it. Even if he's just a bench bat, I honestly don't think I'd trust him at this point, even against a lefty, any more than Julien or whoever else he'd come in for.

I don't think it will depend so much on the size of specifically the road team's fan base. I think it will just depend on the national appeal of both teams. Which, my gut feel for the AL would be, in order: Houston, Texas, Tampa/Baltimore, Toronto, Minnesota/Seattle. So, for the Twins to get night games, I think we need to hope for Houston or Texas as our opponent.

I wince at losing Raya, and to a lesser degree Schobel, so that one is probably fair. I would give up Miranda/Winder for Alonso in a heartbeat, which means it's probably not enough. Mercedes/Prielipp is truly two lotto tickets that in a few years could just as easily turn into "We only gave up two burn-outs for Alonso" as "The Twins actually traded these two future all-stars for one year of Pete Alonso"

The Top 5 Twins September Call-Up Options

TLDR = "The Twins currently have 4 (maybe 5) players who can play 1B, with their primary 1B due back from the IL soon. And yes, those players are doing well, but if we ignore their good games, then they're doing bad. Therefore we should take our good catcher and move him to first, where he has virtually never played before, and play our bad catcher more often."

Twins now in grace period with Diamond Sports group
chaderic20 replied to David HK's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
This is my point, if the Twins are the one thing you're interested in, then this is an amazing deal. Drop your $150 cable, and pay $20 for Twins. Then put the $130 to use for whatever you want, whether that be other streaming services, bump up the college fund for the kids, go out for a nice steak dinner, whatever. And for those of us who dropped cable years ago, we now a way to watch the Twins without resorting to less-then-legal means. (In the hypothetical situation where MLB takes over Twins from BSN.) You and I may just have to agree to disagree on this, cuz I see nothing but positives here. If you live in market and want to keep cable, you can, as the MLB produced games will be on multiple cable providers it sounds like. Or if you want, drop your cable and save a ton of money, or put that money to other uses. -

chaderic20 replied to David HK's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Sure, if my only choices to watch the Twins in-market are, $150 for cable or $20 for Twins games only, I take the $20 for Twins games only every day and twice on Sunday. That's not even close. They're not even in the same ballpark (if you'll excuse the pun). And then if I want, I can take the extra $130 and subscribe to any or all of Netflix, Hulu/Disney+/ESPN+, Paramount+, HBO Max, Apple+, and Prime Video. Or swap one or two of those out for another sports team/league streaming service if you want, or to upgrade to all of MLB instead of just the Twins. Or change what combo of services you pay for every few months depending on what sport is in season and what services just released a new season of your favorite show. Like I said, I don't see how MLB taking these and making them available in-market for ONLY $20 is anything but a dream come true for streamers. -

This doesn't leave streamers hanging in any way, it's actually a streamer's dream come true! I will GLADLY pay $20/month to stream in-market games versus $150/month for cable + sports package. As a former resident of Iowa, BSN breaking their contract with the Twins and MLB doing something like this for the Twins would have be an answer to prayer. Now a resident of IL, I can just do MLB.TV and watch the Twins, but I actually still hope for all the Twins (and Cubs, White Sox, Royals, Cardinals, and Brewers) fans in Iowa, that MLB takes over those teams' broadcasts and allows in-market streaming for just $20. Even if it's $20 per team, you could still get all 6 of those for less than cable. So, $20 per month? TAKE MY MONEY!!! -
Twins/Pirates Draft Trade - Chaos
chaderic20 commented on jishfish's blog entry in Pirates/Twins - Outside the Box Trade
According to this Fangraphs article, "commencing with players eligible for the 2015 Rule 4 Draft, (a) players selected in the Draft may be traded beginning on the day following the conclusion of the World Series, and (b) drafted players cannot be PTBNLs unless they otherwise could be traded pursuant to Rule 3(b)(6), as amended, at the time of the trade". So, the Twins couldn't trade whoever they draft at #5 until the day after the WS. Also, players unexpectedly fall down the draft board all the time, so there's no reason to expect that the top four picks will be as anyone projects, leaving only so-and-so at #5. -

Baseball is Bringing the Best Rule Change Yet
chaderic20 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure what's shown on TV is completely separate from the ABS system that would actually be used to make the calls. It's just a simple graphical overlay added to the broadcast. So, whether or not what's shown on TV is accurate, is irrelevant. Again, it doesn't matter whether we as fans know the specifics of the rules or not, what matters is whether the computer or the umpire is more consistently correct in determining balls/strikes as defined by the rules. We the fans, and our knowledge and interpretation of the rules, and our vantage point as provided by the broadcast, is completely beside the point. The ABS system can be programmed to know the exact specifics of the rule, and can more accurately tell whether or not the pitch met the specific criteria to be a strike than a human can. So, why should it not be used?- 70 replies

Baseball is Bringing the Best Rule Change Yet
chaderic20 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Whether not we can define the exact dimensions of the zone has no relevance on the discussion. We can still be for automated enforcement of the rule without being able to quote the rule exactly. We're not saying we can do better than the umps, we're saying the ABS system can. So, I don't need to know the zone, only the computer does. Analogy: I don't need to know the speed limit of a road to be in favor police (the rule enforcers) using a radar gun (technology) to get my speed instead of just eyeballing it and saying "looked like 80 to me, here's your ticket". In the same way, I don't need to know the exact definition of the zone to be for umpires (the rule enforcers) using ABS (technology) to determine ball/strike instead of just saying "looked like a strike to me, you're out!". But since you've challenged twice, here's my shot without looking it up. I believe the strike zone is defined along the lines of, "if any part of the ball crosses any part of home plate between the batter's knees and a midpoint between his shoulders and belt, it shall be called a strike". And given home plate is 17" wide, the zone would therefore be 17" wide.- 70 replies

Baseball is Bringing the Best Rule Change Yet
chaderic20 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No, the ABS system would not handle those things. No one has suggested it will or should. In fact, multiple people have stated that the home plate ump will still need to be there specifically for these things. Why? Because there is currently no technology that does these things, like there is for determining ball/strike. Well, those machines do exist, but again, no one is arguing for them to be used instead of pitchers, so I'm not sure what your point is here. You're talking about replacing the actual players, we're talking about automated enforcement of one specific rule, which are completely different things.- 70 replies

Baseball is Bringing the Best Rule Change Yet
chaderic20 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fully automated seems like a no-brainer to me. Why waste time challenging calls when we have the technology to just get it right the first time? "We need the human error element!" Please. Where else would we accept such a ridiculous argument, when again, we have the technology to get it right? Catchers will be reduced to "just playing catch"? Except for calling games, blocking pitches, throwing out runners, fielding bunts and short hits, guarding the plate, etc, etc, etc. "It makes the home plate ump useless!" The ump behind the plate still has plenty to do, and now doesn't have to worry about looking foolish making a bad strike/ball call anymore. And God knows umps could use the PR boost. They should be jumping at the chance to make less bad calls. "But computers don't know an individual batter's zone!" Neither do human umpires! A computer can be programmed to specific parameters and can be trusted to call the zone exactly by those parameters consistently, every. single. time. Whether that's something pre-defined based on a player's height and stored in a database, or whether it uses some sort of optical recognition to "see" the batter's body position and calculate the zone on the fly. This can't come soon enough.- 70 replies

Twins will go as far as Rocco won’t let them
chaderic20 replied to tlkriens's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
From calling Nick Gordon, Dee Gordon, to claiming Brock Stewart is a bad choice because you've never heard him (which isn't surprising, considering the Nick/Dee confusion), and then Duran being unavailable isn't a good enough reason for not using him. Great stuff. Love Stu's articles....oh, what's that? This wasn't Stu?
