Article: Twins Trade Doumit to Braves

According to Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan, the Twins and Braves are finalizing a deal that involves catcher/outfielder Ryan Doumit.

Ken Rosenthal reports the Twins acquire LHP Sean Gilmartin in exchange for Doumit. Gilmartin is a 23-year-old lefty whom Baseball Prospectus wrote this in the 2013 Annual:

The Braves’ first-round pick in 2011, Gilmartin reached Triple-A in his first full professional season. There’s reason to believe he could reach Atlanta in his second. Gilmartin throws strikes and attacks batters with a three-pitch mix. His changeup is the best offering of the bunch, and grades out as an above-average offering. The fastball is nothing special from a velocity standpoint—often sitting in the high-80s—but Gilmartin can put it where he wants and cut it when he wants. His outlook varies from mid- to back-end starter, depending on how sold you are on his ability to overcome his so-so stuff.

Sean Gilmartin's toe jam? Anything more would be an overpay from the Braves' angle. I would not understand this acquisition at all from the Braves side.

Payment for the nice Target Field hospitality they've enjoyed the last few days as they tour new ballparks? (J/K)

I'm not sure who they'd acquire from the Braves, catching-wise.

Sorry, I was thinking more along the lines of signing Suzuki or Buck. (I didn't make that clear).

Fascinating. Truly. No idea if this guy is any good, but still a good trade, imo. He was part of a group of bad fielders/mediocre hitters that could "play DH" but not much else, imo.

Wow, I'm not a big Gilmartin fan but plenty of others have been. I was all for moving Doumit simply to clear up the RF/1B/DH mess that is starting to be bothersome, I was never expecting a legit return.

I wonder if this was in the works when the Twins resigned Kubel. It would make a little more sense. If so, I wonder if the Twins reported interest in a fourth free agent pitcher and Mark Reynolds is a preview of possible Worley/Diamond/Gibson/Correia and Plouffe trades.

Was joking about Gilmartin, but his toe jam may be more valuable than Gilmartin himself. This isn't good for either team.

Sure it is. The Twins lose a guy that does nothing for them, and free up money.

Got more out of the trade than I thought we would. Kubel's decision to come here on the minor league deal makes more sense now too. If he does anything in spring, he'll likely be the starting DH opening day.

And you didn't get one. You got a better ex-Brave when you acquired Scott Diamond.

Depends. Dave O'Brien, the Braves beat writer, responded to someone asking about money involved, and he said there is some, but it's not clear yet.

While Gilmarten isn't the hot prospect he once was this is a freaking great return for Doumit. Ibarra for Butera now Gilmarten for Doumit. TR's track record in nabbing prospects for mediocre vets is top notch.

Looks like a poor man's version of Scott Diamond. The positive is we got rid of a salary and a freed up a space for someone who might be part of the future.

Nice buy low, struggled with command and injuries this past year. Good get for a guy that is kind of redundant as a DH/bad defensive OF and not a part of the future. Would've liked to see him stick as our backup this year but really not concerned with that position on a likely non-contender.

He was the Brave #5 prospect and a guy who dang near made it to the majors his first year in pro ball. He spent last year in AAA and had a bad year. I like the buy low move here.

Wasn't Miguel Sulbaran acquired for Butera?

Twins have been after Gilmartin for awhile they were even linked to him in the draft if I remember. Lefty that doesn't throw real hard with excellent control. Decent return for Doumit to get a close to mlb ready starter.

Preseason, he may have been #5, but he never was a serious consideration for the majors in his first season of pro ball or even his second season.

I'm not sure you guys have a grip on how bad Gilmartin has become. Think Alex Wimmers from the left side.
Sure, but if the Braves just traded Doumit and his contract back to the Twins for Wimmers, you'd certainly be hyped the Braves obtained a buy low former first rounder, no matter how remote that ceiling is or how distant that prospect status in the past.

Who cares? Doumit was worth zero (probably held negative value, actually) on the field......and cost money. Now he costs less money, and he's not clogging up space for others. I don't see any downside here at all. Even if they pay 100% of his salary, he's gone, and they get a pitcher (who may be awful, or may not). This makes it easier for Willingham to be the full time DH, imo. It frees a roster spot for them to make a trade, or sign a FA.

While I don't love every move TR makes, he is good at these small deals, imo.

Interesting little piece on Gilmartin.

To be effective at the major-league level, Gilmartin’s control and command will have to be at their absolute best.

Hard to know if he can be effective in the mlb but Doumit was rapidly becoming the "odd man out" for the Twins -- especially if they are close to signing another catcher.

And the Twins do love those "command and control" artists.

I can't help but ask what the Braves know about Gilmarten that they are willing to dump him off for only Ryan Doumit?

Should say something when beat guys are saying good trade to move him for Doumit and cash (though the amount is still not clear).
