Mauer on paternity leave until Tuesday

That seems a bit excessive to me.

Agreed.

I realize it's Joe Mauer, but would the Twins do that for anyone else on the roster? Would any other player even ask?

I don't think you remembering all of the factors. Mauer's twins were due in September. They are really quite early and I'm sure he could pay someone to take care of it and go play, but as a father myself, you stay with your first kids and make sure everything is ok. You just wouldn't be any good anyway. Your head wouldn't be in what you are doing. Also, he is losing two days worth of pay. I think it's great.

Oh! Please. What is more important? Play to more games in a season where the team is going nowhere, and is only a showcase for rookies and trade candidates, or taking care of your twin premature daughters? The answer is obvious.

My immediate thought is for the health of Joe's wife and kids.

I'm not a 'Mauer walks on water' guy, but Joe just doesn't occur as the kind of person who would ask for or expect special treatment.

Hope all are well.

The team is on the west coast.

If they were in Minneapolis or even in the Midwest I might be a little more questioning. But why put in that travel time and adjusting to Pacific Time for 2 days of baseball?

Is he getting paid for the extra days? I haven't read this morning. Last night it sounded like it would be without pay. If so, I applaud him for putting his wife and new daughters above the $250,000 - $375,000 he would have earned for this extra time.

And, given that his replacement makes dirt compared to that, I'd like to see the Twins make a generous donation to a babies/children's charity with the money they save. It would be a nice gesture in the midst of another mess of a season.

File this under: Who gives a flying ****?

The Twins are out of the race this year.

The babies were his first and were born early. I don't know much about birth/children etc but I do know this prob isn't "ideal"

I think Mauer has missed like all of 2 or 3 games this year? He has been in 92 of the 100 games so far (including these last 3 or so that he has missed). Him having about a week off to rest his legs etc probably isn't the worst thing in the world either.

Additionally it gives us a chance to see Hermann on a daily basis, maybe this makes the Twins realize they finally have some C depth and can dump Butera?

Also if I were a worse man I would make some snarky remark of Mauer "scoring" in Dec and Jan instead of October when it truly counted ;)

Good for him. Good for the Twins for understanding that a couple of games lost without pay isn't a big deal for a first time father, even if he's an MVP ball player.

Newborn twins are also a different ball of wax. They were almost six weeks early, they are under five pounds, and I read in one article his wife was still in the hospital. None of this is unusual for twins, but it is still different than have a typical 7 to 9 pound baby. I could see why he wanted to stick around for a couple more days.

And as mentioned above, it is kind of a lost season.

Yeah, the fact his wife is still in the hospital is all you need to know, it would be a pretty dick move to just sort of bail at that point.

This just gives people who constantly look for a reason to bash Mauer another thing to complain. So I guess we should be happy for those people.

Yeah, I know, like this complaint, most of the rest of it didn't make any sense either, but when does it have to? He makes 23M a year. :-)

Haha. I hate it when people are paid fair market value! Nothing makes me more upset!!! GRRRR!

I took 3+ weeks off when my son was born, I'm glad there wasn't a blog full of jerks judging me over that.

Think back to the greatest moments in your life.

Joe Mauer could go 5 for 5 with 5 home runs leading the Twins to victory of Game 7 of the World Series.

That amazing game 7 victory would still be ranked way below the birth of your kids.

Everybody in the World should get at least a week off for it.

Um, it's pretty standard for the woman to be in the hospital 3-4 days after birth. This really shouldn't be any indication at all.

But I agree, let the guy have time with his family. It sure as hell doesn't make a difference for the team one way or the other. (Though my fantasy squad misses him right now....)

Thank goodness someone said something intelligent early on in this thread and took away the momentum. It kept the usual suspects from chiming in.

I recall similar criticism when Span took off a decent number of days when his Grandmother died.

Pretty sickening to be honest.

Yeah, thats probably true. As mentioned I thankfully don't know much about all of that yet :)

I think if the Twins were in town there would be a good chance Mauer would be suiting up "going to work" and then going back to be with his family afterwards etc.

Really? Have we gone back 50-60 years cuz I thought most insurance companies were making new moms leave the hospital really fast (like 24 hours). Personally I've always thought that was ridiculous.

I'm not criticizing Mauer here. I'm just trying to figure out if there has been a reversal in the length of time in the hospital. (And yes, with premature Twins, you'd need a extra time. Fortunately they were girls -- usually more developed than boys -- and they weighed nearly 5#. Plus she's a nurse so undoubtedly took good care of herself during pregnancy.)

My wife and I had our first earlier this summer and he was born on a Tuesday, we weren't released until the Friday. Now it depend on C-sections and all that too. I know that twins generally are born premature by a few weeks as well and with any pre-mature birth you are likely to stay a bit longer too.

I'm guessing most people that duck out sooner do so more for the cost. I can tell you I'm quite happy for my insurance being awesome with what I saw for charges.

Glad to hear that Lev 'cuz a number of years ago, there were companies that were barely allowing 16 hours (a partial day based upon what time the woman went in).

I think there was kind of a realization that they had taken it too far. And yep, C-sections are surgery so they get a bit more time.

It's not pretty standard for women to be in the hospital that long at all, excepting C-sections, of course. Unless something goes wrong with mother or child, they should both be outta there in about 48 hours.

If I remember right... Long time ago... It's 2 days max and could be 24 hours with no problems. Caesarian can be 3 to 4 days.

Premature Twins... I have no idea but you'd have to assume longer...

If I'm Dad... I will show up at the home ball park... But I ain't flying anywhere. Good for Joe!

You're right, but we're not all that far past the 48 hour mark now anyway. And a premature birth of Twins I have to expect would go beyond that standard mark.

Right. Didn't mean to imply that something was "wrong." Just meant that it's not "standard" if everything is normal/average/whatever. Obviously twins, and premature twins, aren't normal/average/whatever.

First off, It's a no-brainer that he takes some time off for the twins that matter.

Second, he gets a little physical break in a meaningless season. Hell, give him a month off. We all want him to stay healthy, don't we?

There is no need for a quick trip top Seattle to, what, DH. It gives the Twins a chance to look at some other guys (and see where Drew Butera belongs).

She had Twins, gang. They were premature. They are small. We know litle of what is going on besides the birth. Is it an extended need stay? Are there any problems (hope not).

He's giving up two days pay.

Kill off this thread, please!
