Morneau/Mauer Double Bobblehead: An Analysis

The first 10,000 fans to Target Field on Friday get this beauty. Parker tweeted out that it looked like one of them was scoring from 1st base, but several people disagreed with him and he called it back. But it leads to the question, what is going on here? Are there any hidden messages (a fateful goodbye pending a Morneau trade)?

Morneau has his batting gloves on and is standing on homeplate. Presumably, then, Morneau has just hit a two-run (or more) homer, which would have scored Mauer, and Mauer is now congratulating him. But in that scenario, Mauer should have scored first, and is now standing creepily inside the diamond, forcing Morneau to do a 180-degree turn for the high five.

Also, Morneau needs eye blacks for the sun glare, but Baby Jesus doesn't? I find this hard to believe since Mauer (with an assist from Morneau and Cuddy) more or less single-handedly ordered the CF pines dug up because of batter's eye interference. Plus, as Josh Hamilton taught us, blue-eyed people are basically blind in the sunlight.

Finally, their heads and feet are comically large, but such is the charm of a bobblehead. I might actually have gone to that game but for other plans with the wife.

There's probably something better I could be doing right now, but such is the "Sports Abyss".

anyone else think a more appropriate double-bobblehead figure would have been Gardy and Punto? :-)

With Punto doing inappropriate things to Gardy with his bobblyhead!

(I'll give myself a warning for this vulgar comment but just couldn't resist hitting send)

I'm never there early enough for this kind of thing, since I'm usually stumbling in from Cuzzy's. Anyone know how early you have to get there to have a reasonable shot at picking one of these up?

Are you sure they're high fiving? I think it's Mauer once again falling for Mornie's good ol' "who wants ice cream after the game" trick.

Its a bad High 5... Justin appears to have slapped Joe's Wrist.

Justin is Canadian and Canadians are notoriously bad at high fiving. I once attempted to high 5 with a Manitoban because he successfully passed a sobriety checkpoint.

He broke off the antenna on my car.

I'm a bit concerned about the non-verbal cues going on here. Morneau seems to be staring intently in Mauer's eyes, but Mauer uncomfortabley refuses to make eye-contact. It seems like the standard morning after awkward moment to me.

I think its pretty clear that Mauer is scoring on a home run, and Morneau is high-fiving him as he steps into the righthanded batters box.

what's this high fiving you speak of? The problem is you don't high five in hockey, you throw yourself face first into the glass, you can't do that in baseball.

Now low fives, that's a particular specialty of mine....

Your antenna was already broken and you know it.

Exactly! He's from Grand Forks for Christ's sake.

Grand Forkites can't high five either. They typically don't know that it's coming.

Well, who can blame them? What the heck would there be to high five about anyway? No flood this year?

It was high fives all around when the news broke about Chipotle coming to town.....turned out to be a hoax, tough times turned tougher.

Oh man, when that Olive Garden finally came to town. Marilyn Hagerty wasn't the only one high-fivin'.

I just want to say this is maybe the funniest thread I've come across since joining the community. I just wish Joe's sideburns were a little bit longer

This thread easily exceeded my very modest expectations. Haha.

Trying to get a free bobblehead featuring Joe Mauer in this state is like trying to get Hannah Montana tickets circa 4 or 5 years ago. Good luck. Wife (then girlfriend) was out of town one weekend, so I showed up like 2.5 hours before a game at the Dome, the Mauer bobbleheads were LONG gone by the time I got there. So I got to take in the "ambiance" of the Metrodome for a few hours while watching everybody except me catch a batting practice HR in my section. Good times!
