This escalated quickly, my goodness. Call me crazy… But I would sign Jones after he clears waivers and offer the minimum this year with a $10 ish million option for 2025. He can be the next KOC rehab project.

Ooof, I don't know, I don't think I want him on this team. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who could handle looking over his shoulder at McCarthy, and he also doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who will handle losing the starting job to McCarthy well either. At least I think he's not that kind of guy yet.

I think he needs to take the Carson Wentz/Blaine Gabbert path. Get humbled when he realizes no team wants to offer him a starting job, than accept his fate and eventually find a prime back up gig and make a nice career out of it, realizing that maybe he'll get another shot at starting later in life.

I don't think I want the Vikings to be the SECOND team he goes to. That didn't work out for the teams that signed Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield or Geno Smith as reclamation projects.

Oh I think he’s been humbled plenty over the last week and a half… Dude just participated as a practice team safety yesterday.

Jones I’m guessing will want to go to a stable organization like San Fran, LAR, Minnesota, Green Bay, etc. for a reset. I don’t think any team will offer him a starting gig outright.

I don't think he accepted being humbled though, otherwise he wouldn't have asked for his release. He would have accepted that his play wasn't good enough, kept his mouth shut and then set out to land in Buffalo or Detroit next year where he knows he won't start but he can show everyone that he can be a role player and a good soldier on a winning team.

I don't think he should go anywhere, like Minnesota, where there will be even a hint of role ambiguity.

I like the idea of him as McCarthy's backup next season and it makes sense for him, obviously. I like the idea of grabbing him now with that option year. As bad as he is, he's probably better than Mullens.

You don't think he'll be a malcontent? He just asked for his release instead of sitting on the bench, so clearly he thinks he should be a starter. If you grab him now, then that means he won't have a chance to test free agency and realize NOBODY wants him to start.

And honestly, I think I'd rather have Mullens (and I don't want Mullens). Jones seems to have the same problem as Justin Fields and Christian Ponder. Tentative, indecisive and slow reads hanging on to the ball too long getting sacked. It's been six years and the guy still can't or won't throw deep even with a stud rookie downfield threat on the team, he's probably the worst in the league at it with 6.1 yards per attempt.

Actually, I don't think he's a malcontent. I haven't heard any prima donna stuff about him (although I could very well have missed it). As to asking for his release, I think that's as much a business decision that his agent pushed as anything else. I wouldn't hold that - alone - against him. I haven't heard any bad things about him and his teammates seem to be saying the right things.

That said, I don't think he's just a change of scenery guy but considering how few quality QBs there are, a backup of his ability is probably pretty good with some upside with better coaching.

I really don’t understand this

We get a 6 week trial run for basically free to see if we want to keep him around for the 2025 season. He gets a head start learning KOC’s system and see how he interacts with McCarthy.

Plus, he is insurance this year if Darnold goes down with injury. He’s a hell of a lot better than Rypien on our practice squad. I’m a big fan of the move.

I don’t know, he’s been in the league long enough to say he’s just not really good. Is he jumping ahead of mullens this year? Because like, they’re both backups but I’ve seen Mullens throw for 400 yards and almost beat the lions a couple times last year. Not saying he’s good but I can’t say jones is any better. Plus he at least knows the system.

We were all saying that about Darnold when we signed him too. KOC is earning his reputation as a QB rehab expert.

Jones won’t jump ahead of Mullens in the next couple of weeks, that’s why he’s on the PS.

Agreed. Even if Jones is a better QB than Mullens, which I don't think is a given (that was definitely not a Nick Mullens endorsement), I don't think Jones fits this offense. Despite Darnold's many short comings, he does take chances and has a gunslinger mentality throwing deep and avoiding check downs unless absolutely necessary. Nick Mullens is basically the same style while Daniel Jones is the polar opposite. I think Jefferson becomes next to pointless if Jones ever enters the game.

Yeah I’m definitely not singing the praises of Mullens and his penchant for turning the ball over. But jones does too.

I’ve seen some tweets about jones being used near the goal line. I’m assuming they weren’t joking lol

I think this is the big one. We know we want a capable back up and Darnold won't be back. So let's take a look at a former first rounder who has had some success but poorly coached and see if there's anything there. I haven't seen the terms of the contract but this strikes me as a very low risk move.

Just to reiterate I’m not a Danny Dimes truther, but we are a Darnold or Mullens injury away from something called Brett Rypien wearing a Vikings uniform. I’d rather have Jones who’s started 60 something games as insurance for the playoffs.

Is it at all possible that if they make a deep playoff run, Darnold DOES come back?

I mean there isn’t any evidence (because he hasn’t played) that JJMc could do as well as Darnold has.

Well that is an interesting thought. Not sure that he's that much more mobile than Darnold, but if he's good at those 1 yard 3rd/4th down plays, that could be useful.

In any case, while I don't much care for Jones as a QB, I don't think this is a Super Bowl team, and if Darnold goes down there won't be much to cheer for anyway, so I don't much care who the backup is.

It wouldn't be my choice, but I have to admit that I think if Darnold has a second year in this system, he *could* be significantly better. Baker Mayfield was good last year, but borderline MVP this year.

I assume he’s going to be expensive since there are so many teams in need of a competent quarterback. Do the Vikings want to get in to a bidding war?

I’m just wary of handing the keys over to a guy who played a couple quarters in the preseason and is coming off an injury

I don't think it's possible. If he has a deep run, he's going to get a 50m/avg contract from someone - Giants, Raiders, Steelers, Jets(HA!), Browns, Rams (really good fit), and others need a QB. We've gotten out of salary cap hell and drafted our QB of the future in McCarthy who will be a lot cheaper, allowing the team to build around him and make upgrades. I don't think the team can deviate from those plans.

I also, personally, think McCarthy is going to be a very good QB in KOC's system.

Well, that's why a good backup is so important and why this look at Jones makes sense for next year as well.

Yeah, I would be too but they're going to have to turn the keys over at some point and regardless of reps, I'm expecting a learning curve.

But even if Darnold isn't Mayfield, he'll probably be treated as such around the league since it's an easy comp. Mayfield wasn't really expensive as far as QBs go. 3 year 100M but only 50M guaranteed. That sounds worse than it actually is.

However, last year there were six first round QBs for the needy clubs, this year it looks like there are two, so there may be more demand for Darnold's services.

I understand what you’re saying but I’ve had several giants fan friends texting me “good luck” already today 😂
