I'll throw Ted a bone and say this: The ability to keep the pipeline producing does indeed soften the blow of losing Steer and CES. If you keep producing talented prospects it allows you to be more comfortable trading prospects.

However... I will quickly take that bone away by saying that the club will always be better off if they have Steer, CES and Keaschall in the same organization.

I've always been a Steer fan, but he should never, ever play 2B. 3B or the OF.  His glove profiles at 1B and DH.  He is very subpar anywhere else, even if the Reds did have played him at those positions.

He's the same age as AK, and the Twins were never keeping Steer over him.  CES is only 24, but a complete mess at the plate and also is going to 1B or DH.  I agree the Twins lost the trade with Mahle's injuries, but on the contrary, they traded from a position of surplus and got a guy they thought might make a difference.

Can't agree with your take at all. We've seen this time and again from Twins prospects who play the positional shuffle in the pursuit of flexibility. They never get comfortable. Positioning and awareness of the situation are largely the result of repetition.

Steer was not scouted as a poor defender, and if he was given regular playing time at a single position, there's no reason to expect he wouldn't improve quite a bit. 3rd base might be a stretch as his arm is pretty weak.

This is my concern as well. I fear the Twins will move Keaschal around in the name of positional flexibility and he won’t get good anywhere. As we’ve seen with other players if you don’t end up being a good fielder and start sliding down the defensive spectrum it raises the bar for how well you have to hit. Plus you can only roster so many 1st base / DH types.
