If the trade up to 3 proves to be too much, then I certainly see this scenario playing out. For Maye’s sake, I hope New England passes on him and the other top QBs. I see their organization the same way as Carolina last year. There’s no infrastructure in place to make him successful.

I think they will be super patient with him. He'll spend most of the year on the bench and they will take their time developing him. I do worry about their coaching but drafting Maye is not about winning now.

I think it's more than about not having players to support Maye. NE was foolish for not wiping the slate clean and instead going with the remains of the Belichick regime. Should have hired a completely new front office and completely new coaching staff.

The 2024 Patriots feels like that Jason Bourne movie that didn't have Jason Bourne in it. Seems like an imminent disaster.

I’m sure they will, but that only makes the job more difficult to field a quality team around him before he’s either ruined or needing a $60 million AAV extension. I don’t know why they want to start the rookie contract clock now when they have no OL, no receiving options, and a 1st time HC/OC.

This. The Patriots have no OL, Osborn is their current top 2 WR, and the OC has no experience designing schemes or calling plays. Only Carolina last year has a worse situation for a young QB to go to.

Agreed. That's why my conspiracy theory brain thought the Patriots would surprise everyone by picking a possible generational WR talent in Marvin Harrison first, than try for the QB.

But that would require the Patriots being self aware enough to know that they are currently a mess, and most dysfunctional franchises probably don't realize they are dysfunctional.

I agree that it is a bad situation - I'm just trying to rationalize the pick in their perspective. Their interior OL is pretty good and I believe Demario Douglas and Kendrick Bourne are their top 2 WRs (which is pretty bad but they really need a true #1 WR). Smith-Schuster is cooked and Osborn isn't gonna push the needle there. Henry is a passable TE. Tackle and WR are the biggest problems... which are usually the most expensive to solve.

See, I kinda liked the movie even though it bombed in the box office. Renner? Solid. Weisz? Lovely actress. Good cameo by Oscar Issac. Decent fight scenes. Solid popcorn movie.

Pelissero is reporting the Patriots will take Maye at #3 and betting markets have moved him to the landslide favorite. Now the big question looms over McCarthy. I don't buy that the Giants want him. Is #5 the spot? Or will they let him slide a bit while teams go after OTs and WRs?

Yeah, my optimism level with the draft has been all over the place today. But I also don't think the Giants take McCarthy, I'm not convinced they'd even want Maye; I think the QB talk is all a ruse to try to get teams to jump them and take all four QBs assuring them either Harrison or Nabors. The Broncos and Raiders would have to give up more than the Vikings, AND they are in the Chargers division, so if the Vikings do trade up to #5, it would almost surely be for much less than the threat of three 1sts. If the Vikings do trade with the Chargers, would they trade Addison and a 1st since the Chargers would likely miss out on the top three receivers?

You have the opposite issue trading with the Falcons and Bears in the NFC, they'd rather the Broncos or Chargers get the QB. The Titans might be the spot to trade up to if the Chargers aren't being reasonable. But heck, I've seen reports that McCarthy might organically land at 11.

So many ways this could go. I just don't want to see the Vikings get conned and out maneuvered.

Kwesi at the controls.  Can.  Will.  Manuevered.

Disappointing that the dream to get Maye is dead. That was by far my most preferred outcome. I think I call the Giants’ bluff and wait until 8 or 9 to make a trade up for McCarthy.

He will draft a CB

That is literally the only thing that will upset me tonight.

Eight picks in the first four rounds the last two years and they drafted FIVE DBs. Enough. CBs almost always peak during their first contract. They're the RBs of the defense.

I understand why the NFL makes them wait, but I hate this with the first pick. Just pick.

Some bold team should have the first pick announce himself as the first pick in the draft.

Well, I think he isn't terribly good, but until/if we ever know what the trade demands are, can't really judge him on not getting one of these first three QBs.
