I'm not convinced he would have been safe.  But I'm convinced he should make the attempt 100 out of 100 times, given where the ball was when he reached third and the number of outs.

Which is not by itself a bad thing.  Two outs, what is the better chance of scoring, 30% that the next batter doesn't make an out, or (depending on a lot of factors) 50/50 to make the defense make the play?  Game situation (down 2 in the bottom of the ninth, say) also affects the instant calculation the coach must make.

I heard Gladden interview Kepler either this spring training, or last year before spring training. 

Gladden asked Kepler what he did over the offseason. 

Kepler said, and I’m not exaggerating by much: “hit some beaches, did some hiking, some zip lining, maybe a couple parties, basically tried to keep it chill.” 

That kicker though: doing those things was laying low compared to other offseasons 🙂
