The All-Star Game has lost a lot of luster for me since I was a kid, but when I think about a 182-174 NBA ASG, or 14-12 in the NHL, this still at least resembles a real game.

Yes indeed.  Seems like Bobby Orr played 45 minutes in the NHL ASG.

There was a great article about Sonny Gray in the Strib. Sounds like he’s been a good influence on Joe Ryan. Here’s another funny story:

One of the best compliments Gray received came in Game 3 of the 2013 American League Division Series. He was lights out in Game 2, pitching eight scoreless innings for Oakland against the Tigers. During a benches-clearing incident at the end of Game 3, Gray remembers staying in the background as players yelled at one another. A's interpreter Ariel Prieto told Gray, "Miggy wants to see you."

Gray, who was in his first major league season, was confused. This was during the middle of the benches clearing. Prieto reiterated, "Cabrera." Gray shuffled around and didn't know what to expect.

"I get over to Cabrera and he's like, 'hey, you've got good stuff, man. You've got good stuff,' " Gray said. "I'm like: 'Thank you, Mr. Cabrera. I appreciate that.' I didn't know what was happening."

My brother had North Star season tickets and I don't think I missed one Boston-Ninnesota game.  I remember Orr taking the puck behind his net, outskating everyone up the right or left side, and then letting a viscous slap go, or he would cut across the crease and backhanding the puck in.

That’s awesome.

And also says something about the nature of bench-clearing brawls. Sometimes they are legit, but sometimes it’s just guys dancing around.

Man, I live in Bruins territory now but have never been able to convert to Bruins fandom. I still haven't forgotten what Dave Forbes did to Henry Boucha.

I think Terry Riley bit a part of the ear off, one of the North Stars.  For the love of God, I can't remember his name.

No, this guy played hockey for the North Stars.

Sorry — any time ear-biting gets mentioned, it’s hard not to go there…

I always enjoy playing around with rotation scenarios. ..

Whadaya think (and to keep it easier, let’s ignore the Keuchel discussion)?

It is fun to do, and I’m sure the Twins are doing it too.

I am on board with your idea of trying to manage Ober’s innings a little bit. I also like your idea of letting Gray start Sunday, and to add to that maybe even giving him and Lopez an extra day to report to Oakland. Maybe, dunno.

In theory the starters for the first couple games against Oakland would roughly line up to face Cleveland at the end of August and then line up for the first postseason series, although it obviously gets a little sketchy trying to predict out that far.

My bad. His name was Terry O'reilly.

Can't recall that. I remember Mike Milbury going into the stands vs the Rangers and clobbering a guy with his own shoe. God I love hockey. 😀

Better than Ron Coomer. When he use to do the Twins pre game show, they would introduce him as former all star Ron Coomer. I would chuckle every time.

I listen to the Cubs radio broadcast team quite often, and Pat Hughes always introduces Coomer as All Star Ron Coomer

Was Coomer an All-Star, or named to the team?  If yes, end of story.

I listen to them some as well. I really like Hughes. It’s also not hard to hear some of Hughes come through in Provus’s style.
