According to a tweet from Twins PR man Dustin Morse, Manager Ron Gardenhire has said that RHP Sam Deduno will start for the Twins on Friday in Detroit.

No Kyle Gibson yet.

Dang.

Is Deduno on the 40 man roster or does a move have to be made?

Need to make a move, but that's easy with some options for the 60-day DL.

Great, because if there's one thing this team needs more of, it's five-inning, four-run efforts by its starters. Except this time there will be five strikeouts and five walks, so at least there will be some variety in getting to the same result.

Well, we knew that Deduno would be back up but it's not like he's killing AAA hitters. I think, considering his age, the Twins really should've promoted Gibson instead of Deduno. He's certainly the better pitcher. I think moves like this can poison the well between a team and a player.

I suppose in the long run it doesn't matter much.

I don't think it will poison anything with Gibson. I'm sure he has been told that he will be promoted in 2013 and that when he shows a bit more consistency from start to start, he'll be in Minnesota.

It's always entertaining watching Deduno. Looking forward to Friday.

At this point, almost anything is better than watching Pelfrey and Hernandez pitch batting practice (Worley is little better but I still hold out hope for him once his peripherals normalize).

Agreed. I was hoping we'd see Deduno or Walters get another chance. We certainly have others in the rotation that will need to be replaced at this rate.

Fair enough, I guess. At least they pulled the plug on Hernandez, that's a start.

I would have preferred Gibson, and I think Albers has maybe, maybe earned it more, but I understand why they made this move. I disagree with the logic.

It would be a waste to promote Gibson at this time. I can live with him in the minors for another two weeks if it gets us a year of team control. Come June (2?), bring him up.

If Pelf has another "disappointing" outing, I think it is possible that the Twins add either Walters or Gibson for a start in Detroit. I really would like to see Gibson sooner rather than later given his innings limit, but Deduno was going to win a spot in the rotation until he came up lame after the WBC.

It isn't about "team control" for Gibson, it is about arbitration. If Gibson were promoted today, or June 2 or July 10, the Twins would get this season plus six more out of Kyle. It is just that he would be eligible for the bigger dollars of arb after two full seasons plus this partial season.

The logic of this move has not been shared with us, mike, but I understand why you have decided to disagree with it in advance.

If we're talking batting practice, no one exceeds Correia in our group...While Worley has given up more hits, Correia has the worst BAA. Out of 100 qualified pitchers, Correia ranks 91st in BAA. Ugh.

Correction...there was a page 3...Worley dead last in the majors #107 out of 107...Pelfrey worse than Correia...Correia still bad

I said "fair enough...I understand why they made this move"......I don't hate the move, I just would have preferred Gibson. I'm thrilled Hernandez is out of the rotation. I look forward to the day that Gibson and Deduno are both in the rotation over Hernandez, Pelfrey/Correia. I look forward to Meyer being up here. I would have done it in the other order, assuming Gibson is on an innings' limit. Maybe he's not, maybe his innings won't be mostly used in AAA before he is shut down. I have no idea if he's on a limit or not, but I assume he is. If so, I'd rather he be up for more of those innings than less. That's my only disagreement with the decision, as I feel both he and Deduno will be up this year.

I don't mind Deduno getting the call first - if he can pitch like he did in the WBC, he looked pretty solid. You just have to live with his highwire act of walks. It just sucks if they keep Gibson on a strict innings limit (especially when he racks up 9 IP in his previous start, while throwing less than 100 pitches...)

I could have seen going either way with this (Deduno vs Gibson), and I think Deduno would have been in the rotation at the start of the season if not for the injury, so why not? Whatever else, it's bound to be entertaining.

If that conversation took place, I can't imagine anyone could spin that logically to him. No Twins pitcher has been consistant (ly effective) and they are promoting the guy who last season was handed the mantle of Mr. Inconsistancy after Liriano got traded. The non-promotion is clearly Super 2 related, which is fine as long as Gibson doesn't hold it against the organization.

This could unintentionally work out well for the club however. Hopefully Deduno pitches well and forces his way into a regular rotation spot. Then when the Super 2 deadline passes and the Twins can freely call on Gibson, one of the actual terrible vets will get pushed aside. If Gibson took Hernandez's spot, the Twins would probably give the vets much more leash seeing as Deduno isn't exactly a top prospect they NEED to make room for.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Tuesday that Samuel Deduno will be called up from Triple-A Rochester to start Friday's game against the Tigers.

In other words, Kyle Gibson's major league debut will have to wait. Deduno, who had a breakthrough performance during the World Baseball Classic, has a 2.70 ERA and 17/10 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings over three starts with Triple-A Rochester since returning from a groin injury. He'll have a pretty tough first matchup, so fantasy owners should steer clear for now.

Well, a move will need to be made on the 25-man roster too. I guess Thielbar could go back down.

I think it will depend on how Pelf and Worls make out in their starts over the next two days. I hope they don't do this, but I could see them sending out a position player (Dozier, Parmelee, or Arcia) and keeping a 13-man pitching staff if the bullpen remains over-used.

Posted

at this point, I'm not sure what Parmalee's role is....so why not send him down?*

*I am assuming if they send down Hicks, that he is replaced by another CF/OF, still making Parmalee free from having a role. But, I have no idea if he has options, I assume he does.

I think Nick makes a great point. I have wanted to see Deduno this year as I have the high hopes for him still. I reacted with anger when I saw the front page, but this cools me down quite a bit. Gibson will be able to push pretty much anyone out of his way.

Mike mentions the inning limit that Gibson might or might not be on. I think that out Med staff has a chance to redeem themselves or totally @*&% up the Twins future this year. It might be smarter to not do an innings limit, but just keep very open lines of communication with Gibson and see how he does. If there was a limit I could see something like the following...

Through four innings. Twins down 3-7. Gibsie's last start. Gardy to Andy, " He still hasn't reached 160 innings Andy what do I do? The choose your own adventure instruction manual for a rotation that Tom left me doesn't cover this. You know what screw it just send him out there, anythings happens I can lay it on the med staff."

or

End of August. 7th inning. Twins up 3-1. Gibsie's velocity waaaay down last inning. Barely got out of a bases loaded jam with a nifty double play. Kyle keeps rubbing his elbow. Gardy to Andy. "He still hasn't reached 160 innings Andy what do I do? The choose your own adventure instruction manual for a rotation that Tom left me doesn't cover this. You know what screw it just send him out there, anythings happens I can lay it on the med staff."

I Jest, I think.

I don't think Gibson is necessarily on a strict innings limit a la Strasburg, probably more of a range. Almost certainly will be shut down early.

I'm upset with this move. What are they waiting for? Gibson is the pitcher that matters right now and has hope to contribute in the future, we don't need to see more 30 year olds.

In the Choose Your Own Adventure universe, I think you are always supposed to do the opposite of what the Bald Wizard tells you.

Contribute in the future, yes. How does an inconsistent, recovering TJ-er with an inning limit matter so much more right now?

Why not see the 30 year olds and make a last determination if they can also contribute in the future? They don't turn in to pumpkins at 31...

I like it! Deduno is fun to watch, to say the least. I laugh out loud when he pitches. Gibson will be here soon enough, and come season's end, the beginning starting rotation will mostly be gone.
