Another missed oppurtunity by the Twins?

In the offseason we were all waiting for the Twins to sign a good FA starting pitcher after our horrible pitching in 2012. We all knew the Twins wouldnt go after Zach Greinke, and they didnt. The guy I really thought was we would go after is Anibal Sanchez. Hes been consistent and has the ability to get strikeouts. The last 3 seasons hes had an ERA ranging from 3.50-3.90 and Strikeouts ranging from 157-202. Hes a reliable and consistent top of the rotation pitcher, something the Twins havent seen since Santana. So why didnt we go after him? Because the Twins are the Twins, they dont wanna spend money to improve.

 

Through 7 starts hes 3-3 1.97ERA 1.09WHIP and 58Ks. Hes been amazing to say the least. This is just another missed opurtunity to get a solid and reliable pitcher that the Twins missed. We all know how much money they have been cutting so we also know they had the money to sign him. I guess the Twins dont care about winning anymore, they would rather be the doormat of the division.

Let's revisit this in 4 years and see if Sanchez is still worth 16 million a year. Not saying that the Twins shouldn't puruse big money pitching but ANY TEAM doing it should really pick their spots carefully. As much as I hate him Sabathia comes to mind, the first time he was a free agent, because he was mechanically sound and really young and BIG.

I've watched the entire run of Arrested Development six or seven times.

 

And that is probably my favorite scene in the entire show.

Not saying that the Twins shouldn't puruse big money pitching but ANY TEAM doing it should really pick their spots carefully. You just dont get it do you? Yes theres a risk in signing a FA, especialy when its alot of money but its a risk almost every team that wants to win takes. You cant look at every FA and say "Well lets not sign them because they could have a bad season". If you wanna be good and havent been able to draft a good starting pitcher in years than you have to pick up a pitcher through FA, its a risk that you have to take. Every team does it except the Twins. I feel bad for you because you think like the Twins do. You dont think DET knew the possibility that he could have a bad year in 3 years down the road? Of course they did, but they looked at the bigger pitcher which was he can help win games. Hes done that and more, hes been amazing.

If Sanchez were to come to Minnesota with a big contract, it would be a totally different situation. Since this game is so much mental, he might not have had the success in Minnesota that he's having in Detroit. That is why Verlander is so worth it. He makes all parts of the Tigers better.

So I assume you're at least as excited as I am about the new episodes? I have a friend from one of my past lives in Hermosa Beach, and when I was visiting there earlier this year we had a few beers. Turns out that in his job doing sailing charters, he was present for a few days' worth of shooting for the new Arrested Development series, part of which was done on a boat or boats (unclear). He had some interesting stories, but despite a few beers, he wouldn't give away any plot details.

I really, really like Sanchez and touted him the last year... but 5/80 is the highest I would have even considered signing him for. That's what the Tigers gave him, so it wasn't worth the Twins effort to go after him too hard.

In cases like Sanchez, I wonder how he would have responded to a 4/$75m deal.

 

I'd rather have him for four years at more money than five, I think. Especially given the short-to-mid term payroll situation with the Twins.

Could we have an update on the analysis that showed he would have a K rate 6ish and a BB rate of 3ish based on the NL to AL move?

 

He has been pretty awesome so far but I was against signing him last year. He seemed more like a guy that you hoped be average over the contract. I was also really against signing Edwin Jackson since you just hope that he's average.

At the end of the day, how much would it cost to get him to be a MN twin??? What makes anybody think he would want to come here. Even if the Twins matched the contract, why would he choose MN over a Championship contender?? It would have cost the Twins 20mil a season, which is way too much. The pitchers that would come to MN via free agency are the Correia-Pelfrey types. This will change once the Twins start winning. Hopefully soon!!

His strikeout rates are way to high for a Twins pitcher.

It was actually 5/$85 because he has a $5 million buyout on his sixth year option. If they choose to pick up that option, it's 6/$96.

Maybe you can find someone who said this, but not many here.

 

When you take on large future risk, it needs to be for a significant reward in the present. Turning a 75-win team into an 80-win team, or even 80 into 85, doesn't IMO justify that much risk in later seasons. In an offseason or two, when it looks like the team is a solid starter away from trying for a World Series crown, then it makes more sense - and maybe they get creative in a way like Rocket Pig suggested above.
