Article: Twins Minor League Report (5/8): Gibson Shows He's Ready

Awesome job Gibson! Though I kind of doubt he would have pitched the 9th if not for the 16 inning game last night when the Red Wings used 9 pitchers.

I still think the twins are a 85/90 loss team BUT if the organization thinks they can contend (or stay around their current .500 level), Gibson should be recalled immediately for Pedro.

Cmon, what does Hernandez have goin for him in the future as a starter?? Kyle can use up his innings by mid AUG, when Trevor May/Alex Meyer can be recalled to fill in.

Gibson needs to be in them minors he only has around 100IP left and should use that against the top talent so he can be evaluated to see where he is in the plans for 2014. Plus he is good enough to be a MLB starter.

If the Twins do decide to make the Gibson for Hernadez switch do the Twins option Hernadez tomorrow and call up someone for the 4 games before Gibson would start? A Thielbar, Robertson, Wood for bullpen help.

Call Gibson up already for Chrissake! He wouldn't be the 1st project they've thrown out there this year, let's see what he's got.

Gibson is throwing innings for no reason right now. Some people scoffed at my notion that his innings (pitches) limit should be kept in AAA as long as possible. Fair enough. Now he is probably at 110 innings or so for the remainder of the season. The Twins are NOT an abomination and it is conceivable that September matters. And so Gibson should be ready for that . . . . . or not.

Gibson should be given the chance. Wait a few days, call up a relief pitcher on the 40 man roster if necessary, but for the next start try Gibson.

At this pace, he is done in August. Great managing . . .
Right, he should have been thrown out to ML hitters when he hadn't proven his dominance at lower levels.

Maybe we waste some innings on Gibson's arm, but he's being put in a situation where he's more likely to succeed.

This was the first dominant outing for Gibson, which indicates he's been managed pretty well.

Gibson, if called up now, lasts into August and that's it.

He wasn't ready in April. That's the bigger thing. His long term development is most important.

One really good outing is not a trend. His last outing was less than stellar against a better hitting squad. I believe he will show flashes of dominance this year but be inconsistent due to his continued recovery TJ surgery. If he strings a few together and can dominate better teams the MudHens, that would be the sign that he's turned the corner and is ready for a promotion. Not sure Kyle or the organization is well served by rushing him before he's really ready.

This snippet also from their Hot Sheet report last week (before this start):

"Kyle Gibson, rhp, Twins. If the Twins need starting-pitcher help at some point this summer, Gibson should be ready and waiting. He’s only had one awful start in his first five appearances at Triple-A Rochester this spring and he’s had three really good outings, like the one he threw this week (zero runs in 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and two walks). The 25-year-old has shown no lingering effects from his Tommy John surgery and by all accounts looks just about big league ready."

I agree he wasnt ready in April, but at 25 yrs old, the long term development option is over. This is the problem with college draftees who miss time with injuries. He isnt a typical prospect anymore, as he is already on the older side & is wasting away his first option year. Its sink or swim time for him.

Come on, one bad outing from Pedro the rookie, someone in his family passed away, he could not focus. I would worry about Worley and Pelfrey more.

Gibson pitched great, but he did it against the Mud Hens. It takes a little value away that he was practically pitching against a AA team.

OK. I understand that dominating Buffalo is more impressive than dominating Toledo. But he shouldn't be penalized for the quality of his competition, or lack thereof. Fact is, he dominated and gave his team exactly what it needed. I think it definitely shows he's the most ready to take the fifth start in the rotation.

It was not one bad outing. He has not pitched more than 5 1/3 innings and he typically has thrown around 100 pitches to do that. He's been only slightly more effective than Hendriks.

Beyond that, Gibson has earned a promotion. I feel for his start last night. But it is time.

That's because Gardenhire did not want him to throw a lot of pitches. He had one outing in which he gave up no runs in 5 innings and threw only 80 pitches and then he got pulled by Gardenhire. That's against TEXAS RANGERS. In my opinion he is a lot more effective than Hendriks. He is also a lefty. How many starts did Hendriks get in order to earn a win???

I feel that one good start against a REALLY bad AAA team does not earn a quick promotion to the major. One bad start against a GOOD major league team does not earn a demotion to the minor either. I don't think it's time to promote Gibson yet. Deduno and De Vries should get the chance before Gibson.

I worry about Worley and Pelfrey more. They are not rookies and their ERA is over 6. Come on, go easy on the rookies.

3 of his 4 starts have been bad (unless you consider 3 or 4 runs in 5 innings good)....while most people are giving him credit for having a solid game in a huge blowout when the Mets had shut it down. He's a AAA pitcher who hasnt been impressive at all.

I understand why Gibson didn't come up right away, but he is at a point where the Twins should want to see if he is a major league starter or not. Pedro Hernadez is a spot starter/long reliever at best, while Gibson is a #2 starter. The Twins should be wanting to figure out if he will be that #2/#3 starter for 2014 or will they have to move him to the pen and look at other options for 2014. If they are serious about his 130 IP limit then it is completely stupid to say tear up AAA before you get your chance.

It was the perfect time to do so, (except for Hernadez's sister dying), but the bullpen had been taxed, so you bring up a Thielbar or a Wood to sit in the pen for a few days to give help and then when its Gibson's turn in the rotation you send them down (or someone else), and everything is dandy.

Why do I get the impression that Hernadez is the Jason Tyner who shouldn't be on the major league roster but to prove a point to someone they keep marching him out there.

He pitched 5 shutout innings against Texas Rangers and threw only 80 pitches. I consider that's impressive. I think he is ready for the major league. He is a rookie, how many starts has he had in the ML? At least Hendriks was given a season to prove where he belongs.

Hendriks has had only 22 starts over three seasons.
