Bold Twins Predictions for 2012

Umm...What?

I think it is a satirical take on Gardy's propensity to be loyal to light-hitting middle infielders that he takes a liking to, starting with himself.

Twins win 75 games

-Mauer has a good season, .330, 10-15 HR's

-Morneau is sorta healthy and sorta productive, but not the same player

-Capps is average, saves some games, blows a few

-Liriano has a good start to the season and is traded at the deadline

-Twins Defense is improved from last year, but still poor

-Starting pitching is way below average, and the bullpen is about the same.

Halfway through the 2002 American League Championship 10-Tear anniversary celebration, Doug Mientkovich will interrupt, remind everyone that he won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2003, and leave. Koskie will declare the celebration "stupid" and TC will have to fill the 20 minutes remaining in the celebration before first pitch by dancing to several generic Latin-beats songs that had been queued up for Christian Guzman and Luis Rivas (their old walk-up-to-the-batter's-box songs.)

I have to add what my bold predictions are.

Luke Hughes will take over for Danny Valencia full time by the end of the year

Trevor Plouffe will be our starting right fielder

Morneau stays healthy and hits 28 HR

Doumit has a breakout year hitting 18 HR, 90 RBI playing more often

Twins win 81 games

Twins trade Liriano at the trade deadline

Mauer is healthy and bats over .330, the surprise will be 15 HR, as he learns to be more of a pull hitter, understands he is going to have to hit more doubles and HR's over walking.

Not sure if those are really bold or not.

- Nick Blackburn posts a sub 3.30 ERA and is the ace of the staff

- Joe Benson posts the highest WAR of all position players in 2012 after winning the everyday job in RF in early June

- Danny Valencia gets traded mid-season after a solid first half of the season

- Jason Marquis gets released or traded by July 1

Capps would get over 40 saves IF the Twins were in position to win enough games. Hard to get 40+ on a bad team.

Carl Pohlad wins the Mega Millions.

Twins trade Nick Blackburn to the Angels for Albert Pujols.

This happens before the trade deadline.

I don't ever remember entering a season as hard to predict as this one. But I'll give it a go.

-Mauer and Capps have big bounceback years and silence a bunch of their critics

-Morneau gets off to a nice start but somehow hits is noggin again and is forced to retire

-The Twins will be much better than expected and hang in a 3-way race with Cleveland and Detroit (who will not be as good as expected) for a lot of the season before tailing off in September and finishing third

-This will be Gardenhire's final year managing the Twins.

Mauer, Morneau, and Liriano all rebound nicely.

Hughes forces his way into the lineup every day.

Capps stomach explodes after attempting a Minneapolis buffet marathon. Perkins replaces him and becomes the new closer and never lets go of the job.

Liriano will get Cy Young votes.

The defense gives up 55 or fewer unearned runs.

The Twins will score more runs than they allow.

They will be in position to buy at the trade deadline, but Ryan won't be willing to dip into his surplus of OF in order to bring in the stud SP they need.

casilla will emerge as a legit middle infielder and hit .309

maer will miss over %50 of games this year

revere will be traded at the trade deadline

liriano will be traded as well

  • Mauer posts a .900 OPS
  • Liriano has a career ending arm injury
  • Valencia is batting cleanup by the end of the year
  • The bullpen puts up a combined 2.50 ERA
  • Marquis wins 12 games
  • I'll get around to putting up an avatar by the All Star break

-Twins surprise the doubters and are in contention throughout the season

-5 games out in July trade for Grienke and lock him up to a 4 year $72 million deal before the end of the season. I'd think a package of Hicks, Wimmers and a PTBNL would entice the Brewers should they fall out of contention.

-Twins win the 1st wc, but Gardy burns through Grienke and Liriano to secure home field advantage in the one game playoff and Liam Hendricks gets drilled by the Rays and the Twins exit the playoffs.

-Gardy wins MOY

-Twins will win 14 games in April

-Morneau will bat over .300

-Swarzak will end up in rotation in May and stick there till the season is done.

-Twins will end up over .500 in regular season series agains't the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays.

-Gardenhire will not finish the season as Twins Manager.

-Parmalee will hit .240 but have over 20 hr's. and close to .500 slugging ave.

-Twins will have 5 players hit 20 hr's or more this season.

-Perkins will end up on the disabled list and miss half of the season.

-Slama will finally stick with the team coming up in June.

Capps will struggle right away causing Perk to be made closer. Morneau, Plouffe and Hughes all hit 20 at least HRs. Mauer's average stays up over .300 all year. Willingham is a bust. Jamey Carroll goes down with an injury and Brian Dozier is made starting SS. Twins finish 2nd in the Division but don't get a WC spot.

Thanks to the new MLB rule change that further emasculates the importance of the division races AND the top wild card spot, the Twins will now be competitive in the only regular season race that has a win or go home significance. - 5th best.

Perkins replaces Capps as the closer in May. Morneau, Mauer, and Liriano have very good years. Willingham delivers. Valencia has good year. Overall relief pitching terrible. Casilla has good year. Every other starter except Scott Baker is lousy. Team goes 76-86.
