Twins front office staff should at least make it know that they are going after Greinke and/or Hamels. At least make it look like they are trying. As a sign of good-faith. And they should do it early in the off-season; no waiting into the early-spring to see if San Diego lets Jason Marquis go.
Does anyone have a copy of "Moneyball" they could lend Gardenhire? Either the book or DVD. Because it seems most other managers and GMs have read it...
Winning 4 out of 3 would be impressive, but probably impossible. Not because it's the Twins we're talking about: because winning more games than you play is mathmatically impossible.
Tis defensive lineup would be so much better with Revere in center, and Span in right. Revere would be able to cheat to left-center, and Span would have a superior arm to gun down runners on the base paths. Can we blame Gardenhire for not putting his foot down on that, or Span for refusing to give us his position for a younger, faster defender?
If a batter can go into the batter's box and dig a 6"-deep hole for their batting stance, a pitcher can draw initials in the mound as a way to get through the pain of losing a child.
Swarzak's face looks like it needs some facial hair. Something to cover up those lines and space between lips/nose. A nice, thick goatee, or perhaps just a Pavano-stache.
I want Tom Brunansky in the major league dugout working with these batters. Especially Joe Mauer. I have the 1987 World Series DVD set, and Brunansky swings at- and hits- the first pitch each time. That Game 1 of the ALCS is in there, and Bruno - and all the batters around hit- are hitting huge singles and doubles on the first pitch.
Now, I'm not saying that everytime... but when the pitcher is in a first-strike groove... swing.
Remember in 2009, when Blackburn held the Yankees to 1 run in 7-8 innings at Yankee Stadium in the playoffs? The Twins' coaching staff must, because that must be the only reason he is still pitching on this team.
Is there not a wrist brace Morneau could wear? I see them on most other sluggers/batters in the majors, not to mention Sue in the typing pool here has to use one for her Carpal Tunnel...
It makes perfect sense, mathematically. The team you're trying to catch in the standings drops players for underperforming. If you pick them up and have them start, you're going to be at their level in no-time.
If Parmelee is going to get at-bats with Morneau, Mauer, Plouffe, and Doumit (and, apparently, Clete Thomas) he's going to have to play some right, some left, and some first... wherever Gardy decides he has room. This will be good for him.
Having to watch the game on Gameday (at work). Morneau's out was listed first-to-second-to-first... did they try for the double play and miss Willingham at second?
You generally have a guy like Carroll in the #2 hole because he can put the ball in play, moving the leadoff runner over, and "setting the table" for your "in theory" RBI-guys in the 3rd and 4th holes. Gardenhire would never ask Mauer to bunt to move Span over; Mauer is supposed to be the guy who drives in Span once he's moved to second or third on a Carroll bunt or ground out to second.
Of course, if Mauer is only going to his singles and the occasional bloop double, you might as well move him to #2. Maybe he'll be the league-leading sacrifice bunter for all players making north of $20mil/year.
Back to the question at hand...
My favorite Luke Hughes moment came in 2011. He came up in a couple key spots for the Twins early in the season (before the season was a complete waste) and the audio guy at Target Field was smart enough to play the sound byte: "Use the force, Luke." And at least one of the times he came through with a game-tying single.
Why would you send down our winning-est pitcher right now? That hurt to type. It's going to be either Nishioka or Butera that get called up. Either way, the Internet will explode.
Good for Span. Watching on Gameday, Sabathia's been getting everything in the black on the left-handed hitters, and Liriano hasn't. (Not that Liriano's have been better/closer...)
