Seems strange that Kansas City would let him walk away? What am I missing?

If they do let him walk it would be strange... it's hard to know if they would have extended him by now? Maybe they are letting him get a shot at an OC job elsewhere? Or perhaps it's possible they aren't as high on him as we think and they want to find an upgrade?

When I read that my impression was that Bieniemy may want to explore other options to prove to other teams he could do the job outside of Reid’s shadow.

Clearly no one is buying him as it stands now and he can’t do much more in KC to prove everyone otherwise.

Not sure I understand hiring a 65 year old DC.....

Um, they won’t have to worry about another team snagging him for a HC next year? Yeah, didn’t even know he was a candidate. Maybe he’s supposed to be O’Connell‘a Obi Wan Kenobi. Hollywood loves the old goat + young savior storyline.

Anyway, I’m still more interested in the other side of the ball right now.

And that means I’m tired of seeing mock drafts with the Vikings blowing #12 on a stupid CB. Good Lord, we just got rid of Zimmer. Defense backs are a pet peeve of mine by now.

They have zero CBs.....

I’m on board taking either Sauce Gardner or Derek Stingley Jr at 12 if they’re available. Now that we hired a DC who will transition us to a 3-4 base defense I’ll need to start looking into pass rush LBs as well.

I do find it ironic that Barr is no longer under contract the very first year we switch to a 3-4. Now that this is reality, I’m actually interested in retaining him… Since we’re paying him anyways.

If the CB can be a #1 lockdown guy and he's the BPA, then you have to do it. I will admit that my taste for CBs in the 1st round has been ruined by the Spielman/Zimmer regime, but if our new management thinks it's the right move, they've gotta do it.

From what I've seen this draft class is more shallow for blue chip players in the 1st round (sounds like the 3rd/4th rounds will be stronger than usual), so if there's only a couple high-end prospects left, they need to go BPA even if it's CB.

I know we need plenty of them.

But I’m burned out by all those DB picks the last decade and while it’s an important position, I think it’s exceedingly rare that a CB can change the course of a franchise. Which is the kind of player I want since we’re cleaning house.

I also acknowledge there may be no such player.

If I don’t get all gooshy about one of the QBs, I think I have my eye on one of the edge rushers like Ojobo or Walker or maybe Jordan Davis at DT. Devin Lloyd at LB also sounds like he might be fantastic. Everyone likes Nakone Dean better but he’s so dang small. Maybe that’s fine. It would be nice to know what kind of defensive scheme they plan on running. If we’re going 3-4 though, the front seven are my top priority.

I might get gooshy about a QB or two after the combine though.

Some headlines in the NFL today:

Quote

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Carson Wentz will "'probably" be traded or released before the start of the new league year.
The new league year is when Wentz's $15 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed. Wentz's future in Indy looks "bleak," according to Mortensen, which doesn't come as a surprise given how the Colts' season ended and the lack of support Wentz has received this offseason. Wentz is unlikely to draw interest on the trade market and the Colts will be taking a $13.3 million dead money hit if they release him in March.

Quote

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Raiders are "prepared to discuss a contract extension that would keep [Derek Carr] in Las Vegas for the foreseeable future."
It appears new head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler are more committed to Carr than former head coach Jon Gruden, who waffled any time Carr's future came up. In fact, McDaniels and Ziegler were so smitten with Carr that they considered trading for him in recent years, according to Rapoport. Rapoport said Carr -- who has one year left on his contract -- is in line for "a strong, short-term deal" that would keep him off the open market for years.

Dang, I was looking forward to the crapstorm when the Vikings suddenly named Mike Pettine head coach.

Adam Zimmer really thought he still had a shot I bet.

Sounds like Cousins is sticking around. There goes my dream of trading all the anti vaxxers

Still not convinced. They all said the right things, but no one said anything concrete or definitive. Which would have been easy since the team controls the situation.

“I know he’s under contract and I’m excited to coach him. We’ve already started thinking about how we’re going to build those systems for him and our other quarterbacks,” O’Connell said. “I’m anticipating Kirk being a part of what we do.”

New Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah also said he is planning the offseason with the expectation that they’re building an offense around Cousins.

“Anticipating”? What’s there to anticipate when the guy’s under contract? Why does the GM have expectations that he’ll be the QB? Why not just come right out and say Cousins is coming back, no doubt about it?

Never* speak in absolutes. The world can change and you don't want to be boxed in.

*yes, yes, I know.

Watson is definitely a reason to hedge their bets considering his interest.

I will actively root for them to lose every game forever if they bring in Watson. Forever.

I wouldn't be a fan of it either, but there will be a lot of QB movement this offseason, so who knows what opportunities present themselves.

I thought Watson was under significant criminal and NFL investigation as well as facing dozens of civil lawsuits? Did that all get settled? If not, how can you give up anything of value to get him?

None of it is settled.

The Dolphins reportedly offered something around the neighborhood of 3 1sts and a 2nd + 3rd for him at the 2021 trade deadline, so while what you said makes sense... NFL teams don't always operate by common sense.

The Wilfs don't seem like the kind of owners who would want that kind of negative publicity on their product. As mediocre as the team has been under their watch, they do seem to be pretty decent owners.

I mean by NFL standards.
