What would be unexpected about being in a position to compete?

I just meant with respect to a big deadline move, the team will almost certainly be in a position to pick someone up, but we don't know who will be available.

So Giolito, who is young and was always expected to be a top of the rotation talent, becomes just that and some here are quite positive it won't continue.

But Odo has a breakout season at 29 and we're all 100% convinced that 2020 will be a repeat?

Got it.

Right now Giolito, Keuchel, Gio, Lopez, and Cease/Kopech is better and has more promise than Berrios, Odo, Dobnak/Thorpe/Graterol/Smeltzer.

Agree to disagree on Cease. He's got too much ahead to say he's not good. However, I agree completely on Giolito. Goose laid a golden egg.

Question marks? Yes, but count them out of it? No. I'd love for this to be the early 00's where we have little resistance, but it's not. Cleveland is clearly backing down, and Chicago is clearly amping up. We're still better, but we need to prove it.

I don’t think they should be counted out, but I think a lot will need to go right for them to be a real contender for a playoff spot.

Agreed, and they'll certainly be more expensive, but doesn't that fly in the face of the premise of the article? Why wait until July 31st and guarantee yourself a massive price tag?

I certainly wasn't advocating that. But for instance, someone might not be available now that will be available later, because a potential contender tanks. I think the Twins should enter the season with a solidified roster, but you never know what will happen during the year.

Talent on paper is pretty useless. The results of this talent after 3-5 years has been inconsistent or non existent

Chicago's infield defense is worse than the Twins Keuchel may have a problem

So, pretty much the Twins before this last season?

Oh, I don't know...... maybe the Golden State Warriors can answer that. It won't take many injuries to derail most teams. It is amazing the Yankees were as good as they were last year with all the injuries. Nothing is a sure thing, and when one thinks it is, that is when they are often slapped in the face with a dose of reality and Murphy's Law.

The OP is generally in line with my attitude, but I do think the Twins need another starter in the off-season. Between Pineda's suspension and the ever-present risk of injuries, depth is lacking at the moment.

Trade deadline prices can get inflated, which also makes me wary of relying on that option except either out of desperation or due to an unexpected opportunity.

There's a lot of time left in the off-season, so I'm not concerned.

It's easier to sell lottery tickets at the deadline.  Clubs are more worried about getting nothing for their assets.

I'm all for making deadline moves, but I don't think any team should hold back to start the season with the intention of maxing the budget at the deadline. A move in July should be in addition to, not a completion of, a contending team.

?

So don't load up to compete this year because every significant player on the Twins will miss either all or major parts of the season? That's awful logic......

According to national writers, this is the best FA class since 2003.....and the team has added one relief pitcher so far that wasn't on the roster last year. And signed a backup catcher.

On a team that cut payroll last year.....

This always goes overlooked. If Sano is healthy to start the season the Twins likely don't sign Marwin and the payroll would've hovered around 100M.

They should pay through the teeth for Boyd; would have an impact right away.  Obviously, the pressing need is pitching (new HR record last year means offense is doin' just fine), especially SP, so most FO efforts should be spent on that.
