Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Are you speaking rhetorically or do you not think the new FO gets any credit for last year’s results? Not much, no. Pro sports are almost entirely about the players. And almost none of the players were added last year. laloesch 1

Not quite. The coaches who were added last year made a whole lot of a difference. Plus the way the DL was used last year and the way players were moved back and forth to AAA was light-years ahead of the age of Ryan. DocBauer 1

I suspect Bill Belichick and Bill James would disagree with you, also. Analyzing your opponents, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of your own players, selecting and guiding the team management and development staff, positioning, maintaining mental and physical health, having plan Ds after the first three plans don’t work, setting an organization tone, and many other factors under the responsibility of the FO besides collecting talent go into winning.
laloesch Verified Member Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 They're going to sign Cobb, a couple of the non top-tier relievers, and a veteran bat on the cheap and it will be a masterstroke that Terry Ryan could not have pulled off.If they could get him for 4 years 48 million somewhere in that range i'd be for it. Not an ace but certainly a quality arm that is more dynamic than Gibson.

If they do color me excited. But like mentioned, IMO talk is talk. It’s cool we were “in” on Ohtani or whatever, but we didn’t get him. I’m not gonna celebrate the fact that we kind of “tried” Someone should have pointed out that MSP has several non stop flights to Japan everyday
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Well, Pohlad could have moved the team to the West Coast. This is what it would have taken to sign Otani. He wants to live and play there.Geography did not help the Twins. Nothing that the FO could have done. And yet the Rangers still are in the mix, last map I saw had Dallas about exactly as far on the ‘west coast’ as Minnesota. Maybe the Twins never had a shot to begin with, but the FO sure was more than happy to push the news that they were going after him, they pushed that out, not the fans. So if everyone is gonna praise them for “going after/talking to” a guy, they can be criticized when they don’t land them. laloesch 1
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Sounds like the new FO could have done a better job then. Be specific. Since you're privy enough to judge, what is it they could have done better? This criticism ignores that Ohtani's choice seems to be regional. The whole walk-the-talk criticism is context-deaf, and awfully blowhard. snepp and Twins33 2

The Twins don’t pay me to be GM, I’m a fan, I don’t gave all the info they do. But they came out a couple weeks ago putting Press out there they were gonna go hard after him, they ended getting cut early like I did from varsity basketball freshman year! Also Texas isn’t on the coast, yet they haven’t been eliminated..........

KirbyDome89 Verified Member Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 What is the difference between the TR led FO talking about trades they were "close," to getting done at the deadline and this new FO "showing interest," in FAs? I see them as two slightly different versions of the same thing. laloesch and DaveW 2

Trade away our closer at the deadline in a panic move.3. Resigned (eventually) the AL Manager of the year.Talk is talk. Results are better laloesch 1
