Twins Sign RHP Tim Melville

Tim Melville was a big prospect in 2008 when he was a 4th round pick of the Royals out of high school... things didn't pan out for the 27 year old.

In 2016, he made his MLB debut and pitched in 3 games for the Reds. This spring, Melville signed with the Long Island Ducks where he has a 3.45 ERA in nine games and 47 innings.

With the injuries in MLB and pitchers moving up to Rochester, the Red Wings really need a starter. Melville can do that, and he's probably young enough with enough upside to get to the big leagues... though that's probably not the thinking with the signing. For now, he's a short-term fix to a need.

What a blast from the past, this signing is just perfect to go along with the Draft.  Back in 2008, Melville was considered the top HS pitching prospect at the start of the 2008 season but slide to the 4th round due to signability concerns (he signed for first round money 1.25M, a 1M over slot) and a lackluster senior year.

Out of HS the kid used to be 91-95 mph fastball, a plus curveball and an adequate changeup but now a 92-93 mph fastball, off/on decent curveball and a fringy change.

I'm all in favor of taking flyers on highly regarded prospects from the past. Give them a fresh start and a handful of starts and see if you can capture some value.

Depth move.  Newly promoted Yohan Pino and Matt Tracy have been horrible for Rochester.  No MLB implications here, unless he pulls off a Turley.

In which case, no significant MLB implications either.
