Twins sign Buddy Boshers

Chargois has a grand total of 6 2/3s innings in AAA.  I have zero problems letting him pitch a bit more in Rochester before going up.  If he's still doing this 2 months from now, then yes, call him up.  But this has SSS written all over it.

There is no such thing as a large sample size for a relief pitcher. Except maybe career numbers after a decade or so.

Not only that but can it hurt to see how he does? I guess I've never bought the argument that early mlb failure can ruin a guy.

The Twins are not going to contend for the playoffs. There is nothing to lose by bringing him up. If he looks terrible they can always option him back to AAA.

2 months is not small sample size?

Every pitch is a pitcher closer to injury and ineffectiveness. Other teams are realizing this is a young man's pitching game. I'd like to see the Twins do that.

Wanted Rogers up last year, didn't do it. So far, he's been effective this year, maybe they win a game or so more with him up last year, even though he didn't have experience yet.

I'll keep typing it, in a lost year, you need to gather data on your young players, so you know which you want to keep with more certainty. That data, as we've seen, is best gathered at the MLB level, not in the minors.

I hope not. He still has a 0.40 BB/K in the month of May in AAA. The kid needs a solid 300-400 PA in AAA and prove that he can control the strike zone.

Given the FOs stubbornness about Sano in RF and his potential demotion,  coupled with the likelihood that the infatuation with Rex will eventually have to face the reality of his career mean regression... it could be Buxton is up sooner rather than later. (DicknBert aren't good for much, but they do get inside info deemed fit for publication on moves being contemplated).

Tonight's results only further that narrative- Buck was 3/4 with a 2B, HR and a BB. No Ks

If I'm Sean Burnett, I'm firing my agent.

Grossman signed, played one game at AAA and got the call. Burnett's already been in the organization 2 days and he's been passed by another garbage lefty.

Seriously, does Ryan find these MLB castoffs on purpose or is he being targeted by agents? It's as if Boshers, Grossman, Burnett, Kintzler, etc. are to Terry what those Nigerian millionaires that need $5,000 and a social security number are to old people with Hotmail accounts.

Why does he need 400 ABs in AAA?

So he can learn the strike zone and develop some semblance of plate discipline. We all saw how lost he was up here. If he doesn't he will not be a productive major league hitter.

One game doesn't even count as a sample. I'd like to see him maintain an OPS of at least .900 with a 8-10% BB rate, while bringing he K% below 18% before I'd even consider calling him up. At least master a 0.50 BB/K rate in AAA. Before last night's game he was at 0.33.

Who said that it did? I'm only reporting on what the buzz is concerning Buxton and a possible call-up.

What's best for Buxton and what the Twins perceive is best for the club aren't always tracking on parallel paths. The Twins dug this hole by turning the plus of OF defensive depth into a minus- drastic measures might have to be taken in order to pre-empt a bullpen implosion. Mr Goin might have just gotten a memo read by Ryan that pointed out that the Twins are near the top of the MLB charts in FB% and Hard Hit Rates- they are in desperate need of a defensive upgrade to stop the bleeding- there might not be enough waiver wire pitching retreads to make it to September at the rate the Twins are currently burning through arms

Yeah, I get it. It wasn't meant as a dig towards you. But it seems like every time that Buxton puts together a great game in AAA people begin begging for him to be called up again. Doesn't anybody ever learn their lessons?

Part of why it's so annoying to me is because Buxton has the potential to be a star. And if the Twins ever want to win again, they'll need him to become one. He won't do that scuffling through the majors with 5:1 K:BB ratio and hitting in the low .200s. Having to worry about the outfield defense in a lost season at the detriment to the future seems silly to me. Maybe the FO really is on the hot seat, would make more sense as a desperation "Hail Mary" type move.

I've never seen Boshers pitch, and probably couldn't tell you much even if I had, but his career does bear some similarities to Casey Fien when we signed him.

Age 28 season

Very little MLB service time (so, 3 years of potential control at minimum salaries, plus ~3 arb seasons beyond that)

Options remaining (Fien had 1, Boshers has two)

Solid K rate in the minors (Fien 8.9 K/9, Boshers 9.1, both peaking at 11.4)

Boshers had a higher career walk rate, but he also had a better K rate at AA/AAA, and he's left-handed if that's worth bonus points.

Boshers 2016 at Rochester is also better across the board than Fien's 2012 at Rochester.

I actually don't mind giving Boshers a shot over, say, Sean Burnett.  The latter is probably more likely to perform well in the short term MLB, but Boshers is more likely to provide future surplus value to the Twins (which should be the bigger consideration in a lost year, especially when we're already rostering a number of other shorter-term relievers like Jepsen, Abad, and Kintzler).

You joke, but there is a ring of truth to that. From appearances, Ryan is very, very rarely proactive in going after players he wants.
