Trade Deadline Thread

Coming into the year, he was the Yankees 11th rated prospect by Kiley.....so even if he's ticked it up this year, I think you may be over estimating the cost.....

I'm with you on that.  I just didn't read anything that said he was great on both offense and defense.

I've never seen him play, so......

Interesting. From what I was reading about him, he wasn't valued nearly that high. The feeling by some was the Yankees valued defense over offense at catcher and were happy with the combo of McCann and Murphy. Sanchez didn't have good enough catching skills.

Maybe he won't cost that much, but I doubt the Yankees are floating his name at the deadline to exchange him for another prospect, which is all the Twins really have to offer. I would suspect the Yankees want to add a quality MLB player for the stretch drive.

Whether it was Miami, St. Louis or the Twins, Cishek is likely to get non-tendered in the offseason. He made 6+ million in arb year two isn't it? Not many teams want to pay a non-closer an increase of that kind of cash.

I would have gambled with him as the price was close to a salary dump, but he's probably a rental anyway.

I'm not high on Polanco personally.

I am higher on Polanco than Buxton...  Same age, different production and one of them actually does not hurt himself all the time.  Guess who is better?

That's true, most of his mentions seem to be more of the speculation variety, but his name is floating around. We read he is on the Twins radar, for example. Now how much of that speculation is accurate is questionable for sure.

Yeah, I have been trying to track him, and all the trade mentions seem to be coming from other Twins fans/writers. :)

OK, that's a little more like it :)

Question for the board at large:

Would you give a similar package for Norris that you'd offer for Tulo? Obviously he's not as good but he's younger and A LOT cheaper.

Derek, Dan or Bud Norris?

Neither of them are shortstops.  If you are talking about the 26 year old Catcher with career slash line like Suzuki's (.241/.320/.393 vs .255/.312/.371), no way.

Frankly, I have no clue what the package would be.

But I'd rather have Norris. He's young and wouldn't prevent the team from giving out a mega extension to any other young players.

Plus there is no hope for catcher in the system. At least you have hope and a prayer with Polanco or Gordon.

No. The money doesn't offset the talent or potential difference. The packages could have some similar pieces, but only Tulo would command the high end pieces.

Consensus here seemed to be leading with Gibson or Berrios, then adding Kepler, Polanco, etc. for Tulo

Norris is a nice catcher, but he is just not THAT good.

Lester was pitching that game too, isn't he easy to run on?

Yes, but they did that multiple times in the regular season as well with other pitchers on the mound. The wild card game is just most notable.

Norris is also the guy who the Royals ran wild on last year. He has no ability to shut down the run game.

The Royals ran on everyone. Norris is throwing out 35% this year.

Its not that I'm high on Norris, im just very down on Tulowitzki who has about one year left as a shortstop.

Yikes, I didn't realize Norris's bat was down so far this year. Anyone have a line on why he stopped walking this season?

The walks are certainly hurting him, part of that could be league adjustment though.

You're welcome to your opinion but saying something like "Polanco>Buxton" is just so ridiculous that it threatens to derail this thread, so let's just move on.

No, I wouldn't offer as much for Norris as Tulo.  Tulo is an elite player, even with the risks associated with him.

Norris is just young, cheap, and solid.  In my eyes that isn't equal to an elite player, even with the risks associated.

After looking it up - the A's stole 7 bases on the game, 3 were on Lester, one with Soto behind the plate, 2 with Norris behind the plate. They stole 2 bases off Gregerson/Norris, 1 off of Doolittle/Norris, and 1 off of Hammel/Norris.

Barraclough (great name) is a 25 year old reliever with a 10.2 K/9 in AA... but also a 7.3 BB/9.

Cishek has been iffy this year, although he is also controlled for 2 more seasons too.  And the Cards probably deserve the benefit of the doubt (although they failed to get Justin Masterson turned around last year).

He's been quite good since he was recalled. He was also very good in the previous 2 years. He would have been a great "get" for Terry Ryan. Strange delivery though.

Yeah, those sidearmers don't seem to last long anymore. The price was pretty low though, if his paycheck didn't bother a GM there was little harm.

Okay, I suspected that everyone would say Norris is worth less.

Next open question to the board: what would you give for Derek Norris?

I'd start the conversation with Kepler, Gonsalves, plus a 20-30 guy. Do the Padres laugh you out of the room?

That is not a bad offer, but it probably doesn't inspire them to deal Norris immediately. Just looked up his replacement (Hedges) who is still very young and raw, they probably want that apprenticeship to continue a while longer.

Norris today is not unlike Span circa 2012, up the middle player, some earlier demonstrated upside with the bat, 3.5 more years of control. Catching market might be even thinner than CF market?

I don't think the Padres are in a hurry to deal him, either (I've watched several Padres games this season for some reason), which is why I'm curious if they'd laugh Ryan out of the room at that offer.

It's a decent offer but I'm not sure San Diego is in a hurry to move Norris. The value difference in trade between trading him now and trading him in November is almost nil. Hell, the value between trading him now and trading him next July is almost nil.

Baseball GMs valuate control and contracts very oddly.
