I have to admit. I wasn't planning on really watching the HR Derby last night. I figured I'd have it on as background noise. But, it captured my attention. The new format is awesome!!

I'd be curious what others think, but I really enjoyed it. Seemingly each round, Todd Frazier hit a bunch late to win it. That was intense. It went quicker. I thought it was great!!

What did you all think?

When it first started and Rizzo was struggling I thought the format was going to bomb. But then it really started to pick up.

It was great. The players cant just take their time. There has to be a little thought behind it. I hope this helps revitalize the derby.

Pujols was supposed to win though...had money on him. :(

I will try to check it out next time. I'm glad there are at least a few other fans that actually enjoy this stuff even though we realize it's all fluff. :)

Like above poster, part of what I liked before was seeing the really long ones / 500 footers which apparently weren't as many this year. I also liked when the kids were out there shagging. Were there kids in the outfield this year? Seems like a risk if players are trying to race through it.

Also when players from different teams got together in the dugout and went crazy after the really long ones. I liked seeing their reactions to Stanton's blasts last year. Did the TV have those reaction shots in this format?

I don't mind fluff at all if it's done well.

I don't like seeing the kids out there. Freaks me out every time there's a pop up and more so every line drive.

I didn't see the other players as much. Did they leave early? Definitely didn't show them as much. Then again, I missed the first round.

The new format was better overall.  It was actually pretty fun to watch.  There were a few buzzer bating homers, which were a lot of fun.

There weren't a ton of reaction shots because the camera had to cut to the next pitch/hit right away.  They were throwing the next pitch as soon as the last one landed.

I would say that this new format gives a slight advantage to players that can hit line drives that fall just over the wall.  Although you might miss out on "bonus" time that way.  It's hard to really call it bonus time when every player got it, but it was a fun concept.  I like the new format overall though.

Must have taken the timed format from the Florida State League.  That's how they utilized their HR Derby the last 2 years.  Only 3 minutes though and no timeouts :).   Definitely have to have some stamina to stand victorious in this format.

I hope he wasn't doing BackBackBack on every fly ball. :)

The pitches/swings were coming too fast.

I was at my nephew's house...they are not baseball fans in the least. I walked in from enjoying a cold beverage outside with my nephew to find his entire family intensely watching the HR derby. I was pretty shocked. They couldn't name one player, would never have watched it in the past, and they LOVED it.

Might need a tweak or two, but fantastic format change.

The funny part is it sounds like the format was being changed throughout the day, so the way it was played out wasn't the way it was supposed to happen on Monday morning or even Monday noon. There were changes all day long. If Manfred's team works like this on the fly, he's got a good shot going forward in the commish role.
