Why is Staufer Still Here?

I believe rehab can go to 15 days.  I bet the Twins use most or all of it with Arcia.  He is o-fer in his first two games and I'm not sure if Molitor wants him back just yet.

How long can they keep a player down at AAA for rehab?? Why were they in such a hurry to bring Stauffer back, especailly if he wasn't pitching very well?

My guess is that Stauffer won't be cut loose until he actually has a few bad outings in the ML, it'll be one of the young guys sent down (don't shoot the messenger!!!).

The maximum time for Rehab assignments is 20 days for position players and 30 days for pitchers.

What are the rules with someone like Arcia if they just continue to struggle during rehab?  Can they keep them down there but not for Rehab and use an option?  Basically what happens if they decide not to bring him back up?

They can certainly option Arcia to AAA any time they want this season.

In fact, they did something similar last May -- they had him do his ~20 days in AAA for rehab, then they activated and optioned him in one move, before recalling him a couple weeks later.  (And since he was only on optional assignment for ~10 days, they didn't burn an option year on him in 2014, so he still has one remaining.)

My guess is that Tonkin and Pressly are sent down when Fien and Vargas come up, which gets back to 12 pitchers. Might be a bit for Arcia.

I could see Arcia staying down for a bit, but I don't know why they'd suddenly recall Vargas.  They didn't send him down because of interleague, he was already spending a lot of time on the bench the preceding week.

If Molitor brought Stauffer into a game right now, into any kind of semi-meaningful spot, say a 4 run lead with 1 out and runners on first and second, the balloon under which this team has been floating for the past month would pop. A cloud of euphoric helium gas would escape and react with the influx of CO2 released by the collective groans of Twins players, coaches, and fans and float away on an Alberta clipper to Chicago where it would probably water the Cell grass and foul lines with clutch water and 2 out ralliness. Honestly Stauffer cannot be allowed into a game right now, can he?

Quit beating around the bush and tell us what you really think.

EDIT: Oops! Now I see Platoon got to this first. Circus Boy? He gone.

Tim Stauffer has been back with the team for a week and hasn't been used in a game yet. I think that says a lot about his future with the Twins.

Also, let's give Paul Molitor three cheers! It appears he has put someone in the doghouse and that player entirely deserves to be there.

Isn't this a little weird from a Molitor - Ryan standpoint though? How much say the manager has is frequently a murky topic, with the Twins and many other clubs... Molitor doesn't want 13 pitchers and almost certainly did not want Stauffer, either so soon or ever. But yet there he is.

If Stauffer remains in the bullpen when Fien comes back and another reliever is removed from the 25-man roster to get to 12... that would basically be Ryan ordering Molitor to use Stauffer, right? It could be limited to low-leverage situations, of course, but still. That would be a worrisome dynamic.

It might be weird or it might not be weird at all. Molitor wanted to go to 13 pitchers for a brief time. It's possible he told Ryan "Give me Stauffer, he'll only get used in emergency situations anyway." It's also possible Ryan just gave him Stauffer and Molly said "**** it. Tim, take a seat. You're going to be there awhile."

I agree that if Stauffer stays on the roster and the pitching staff goes back to 12 guys, it's time to start drinking heavily because the world makes no sense.

It makes no sense to keep Stauffer over anyone in the bullpen once Fien gets back.

Arcia should not spend any time in AAA beyond a rehab assignment. Stauffer, Duensing, and Santana are the guys (in that order) who should be sent down. Also, just work out a damn trade for Graham already. Send Zack Larson or somebody. Mat Batts.

Oliveros and Arcia on this roster would be good, pronto. I still bet that Vargas is down through the NL trip at the end of June. That allows for Rosario to stay and/or Pinto to come up (both if Herrmann or Nunez leave).
