Where is Vargas?

I've been watching the Rochester box scores to see how Vargas is doing, but he hasn't played since being sent down -- not even in yesterday's doubleheader... According to the Red Wings' website, he hasn't even been issued a uniform number. What happened to Kennys?

Double secret probation? Clearly, there's every reason to believe there was more going on there with that move than was made public. Perhaps, Vargas had some other business to attend to, still, surprising that our enterprising beat writers haven't queried the Twins braintrust on his whereabouts.

ROSTER MOVES: RHP Chih-Wei Hu transferred to Class-A Fort Myers; 1B/DH Kennys Vargas reported after being optioned from Minnesota on 5/17.

Here's the deal with Vargas:

With Hu being called up to make the spot start, they didn't have room on their active roster (24 player limit, guys on DL and rehabbers like Stauffer don't count against limit) to put Vargas on without making a corresponding move.  So they waited until today when Hu was set to be sent back to A+ to activate him.  I'm not sure if the timing of the situation would have allowed them to send Hu down after the first game and then activate Vargas for the second, or if they can only make roster moves at predetermined times in the day

Clearly there isn't. Unless you're looking for those reasons.

Nothing is clear in this situation, the timing of the demotion, where Vargas was and what he was doing on Monday and Tuesday... If he was down just for a quick adjustment to his approach at the plate.... Those are all the jobs of the beat writers to be curious enough to ask about. His reporting date should have been included in the stories about, and quotes from Vargas, as he was leaving town.

He may have hung around with the major league team for a day or two. I think he will be back up regardless after this Pittsburgh series.

I was really hoping for abducted by aliens. Maybe he could have brought back some four-armed, free-swingers for the FO to spend those interplanetary signing dollars on.

I think this is quite possible, even though the team left for Pitt on Monday morning, perhaps Vargas put in some BP and video work before he left for Rochester. But I do fear that the Twins now have incentive to keep him down for service time reasons if he doesn't immediately start addressing the issues that they've sent him down to work on. Presumably, Arcia comes back to replace Bernier at some point soon, the Twins seem pretty happy with the new more defensive-oriented roster, perhaps not room enough for both Arcia and Vargas?

He was also benched in the middle of a decent stretch, so maybe there is more to this and upset management/Molly some how, either way he still has a couple things to work on in his swing regardless, so some AAA time wouldn't be the end of the world IMHO. Once Arcia is back, things become a bit crowded, I think Hicks needs to stay up, and I wouldn't mind seeing Rosario more as well, which means Arcia could potentially slot in as the DH (while spelling Hunter in RF from time to time)?

I have a hard time believing it would be anything related to service time issues, Vargas, while a solid prospect, isn't some blue chipper like Sano/Buxton/Bryant etc

Pretty much agree with all of this, I have a strong hunch, particularly based on Vargas' quotes as he was leaving town, that he and management are far from being on the same page, and that his individual work hasn't yielded the desired results as of yet to the point that it was time to ship him out for a while (and recall that Vargas has gotten advice from David Ortiz in the past).

And sure, Vargas isn't a blue chipper, but there's a lot to like in his potential package at the plate, and for a team that will have some looming payroll dollar issues a few short years from now with their actual blue chippers and re-upping some vets, he will be either- more valuable in a cheaper for longer scenario, or more marketable in trade if he has more available low wage service time, should he blossom in the next couple years.

doesnt he have to spend a minimum of 10 days after being sent down?

Yes, unless someone goes on the DL

And sure, Vargas isn't a blue chipper,......

David Ortiz wasn't a blue chip prospect either. Sometimes guys just turn out a lot better than anyone thought.

this thread is all wrong. It's supposed to be "Where's Waldo?" as in Oswaldo.

Mr. Arcia, come back quickly. We need something to induce folks to buy those right field seats.

So does this mean that the 'he will get more playing time in the minors' angle was inaccurate?  I think he did something to end up in the doghouse and this is a message.

I remember TK sent a message to Ortiz and sent him down for a whole year, I think he got a couple of MLB at bats that year.  TK made fun of his swing saying he looked like a softball player, I wonder if Ortiz has made fun of the Twins for the last 13 or so years??  Im not saying there aren't times when you have to punish these guys to show them how to do things right, but I sure hope if that is the case, that they don't hold a grudge and be stubborn, I mean if the dude starts smacking the ball around he should be up and playing.

Ortiz also found a little thing called steroids and HGH after he left the twins. Dude is 10x the cheater A-Rod ever was, don't let the baaawwwwwwsssstoooon strong fans tell you other wise.

Well why the hell wasn't he taking them when he was playing for the Twins!  I would have loved to see a couple of 40 homerun seasons. It would have been much more fun than watching Dougie hold runners on first base.

I think every team has a "doghouse". Sometimes it seems like a stay in the Twins doghouse tends to run a little longer. I don't know this for a fact, and I doubt there are any analyticals to back it up. But, sometimes there just seems no other reason for some of the roster comings and goings.
