Rumor: Marlins want LH 1B for Eovaldi

I know the numbers don't scream ace but his stuff is electric. Big fastball, slider, curve. He will be 25 w/ 3 years of control remaining.

Rumors out of Pittsburgh that the Pirates were trying to flip Alvarez for him but those evidently fell through. Marlins now looking at Morse. According to one Pirates blog the Marlins prefer a LH batter though.

He cannot strike out 7/9 in the NL. Not sure I'd give much up for him, as he wouldn't have a spot on the rotation anyways.

Yup, good velocity but can't miss bats.  Sounds like just another Mike Pelfrey.

Full disclosure: I dislike non-strikeout pitchers at an unreasonably high level.

Nick: full disclosure appreciated and not necessary for anybody on these boards regularly........ :)

I think he could improve with one or both of the following tweaks

Ditch the 4 seemer in favor of the 2 seemer, a la Liriano, Burnett, and other Pirates pitchers (I believe this is why the Pirates targeted him, assuming there was any truth to the rumors).

Stay with the 4 seemer but pitch up in the zone, not down, a la Phil Hughes.

Right now, he's throwing the 4 seemer down and getting hit with that pitch. Check out his zone profile on fourseem fastballs:

Even though Eovaldi has better value than Vargas, I think I would stand pat if I were the Twins. Their rotation now has a fair amount of depth and I really like Kennys' power potential.

I know Kennys is no guarantee to be a successful MLB player, but if we traded him and he ended up being a 30HR kind of guy, that would probably eat at me for a while.

For the time being, I am at peace with the rotation and our Infield/DH/Catcher. I think Eovaldi has a  chance to be a very good starting pitcher - But I would focus on upgrading other parts of the Twins roster.

I like the concept though - makes for good conversation. :)

I like Eovaldi a lot. However I don't see a fit here. I'm not even sure Vargas would be enough.
