The Minnesota Twins signed outfielder Shane Robinson to a minor league contract with a spring training invite.

He is a 30-year-old who has spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals in 5 of the last 6 years. He's a speed guy, a 4th or 5th outfielder type.

Boy, they sure pulled the plug on Hunter fast.

You know you're getting a solid player when BBR lists his second position as "Pinch Hitter"

If he ends up playing for the Twins at some time this season, it will be a sign that the 2015 season has fallen into chaos.

As prophisized by yesterday's news conference.

I'm guessing Robinson is being brought in to mentor Schaefer.

Mentoring the AAAA guy on one end of the system and also mentoring his spitting image at the other end, Tanner English.  It's clear we got the minor league version of Torii.  I wonder if anyone has looked into his political views?

Knowing nothing about Robinson, I'll predict that he makes the club as backup/platoon partner for Schafer. I have stated for over a year now that Hicks needs AAA time and that he should play in the minors before he gets another AB with the Twins. That means that somebody who is not a prospect needs to be the fourth OF. After checking BB Ref, I see that Robinson has played all three OF positions capably, isn't much of a hitter and has some speed, probably more like Jason Repko than any other backup the Twins have employed recently.

Just filler. He is terrible, so he is yet another example of the Twins not trusting their own system to develop players. Ortiz, Rosario, Kvasnicka, and Reynaldo Rodriguez not enough of an OF for Rochester? I never understand these ridiculous minor league filler signings.

Well, Terry did say he was going to take a look at what was out there and add if he found something he liked.  And give him some credit, he's trying to make certain that the Twins build up some CF futility depth so that they don't go through all of their "real" and fake CFers and end up calling up a SS to play the position  Remember this guy that Ryan similarly took a shine to, except for batting left-handed, almost the identical MO and career arc?:

Pretty incredible that almost two years to the day after trading both major league center fielders, they still are flailing around for a warm body at a critical position at this level.  I guess I can douse the small flame of hope I had for a trade for Bourjos, Jay or Fowler

Meh, on the signing.

But I have to disagree with you on this point Shane. This isn't a Twins move, it's a baseball move that every team employs. There are always filler options AAA less at AA, but still some. Look at the list of names you just listed? And add Farris to it, who I believe is also re-signed. Other than him, how many of those guys have played at AAA for more than a few games? I like Ortiz as a possible multipurpose 4th OF, but he's got something like half a season above AA. Rosario is moving up for the first time. Rodriguez got a few games at AAA last year. This is not a big move, just a typical AAA one.

Seems like a lot of handwringing over nothing, gentlemen. They're called journeymen for a reason, and every AAA team in the country has 'em, right?. They come and go, which is why we can conjure up a dozen names from the past within 15 comments here. Yesterday's Maestro is today's Robinson. Big deal.

i love checking this site for over reactions. The hunter signing wasof course, the worst move since the sox traded the babe. Now, the twins waste their time with AAA fillers like every other team in the league. How DARE they. Fire terry ryan. Fire st peter, fire the pohlads, fire marc dayton, fire gardy! We need new blood too! Because in a business, new blood is needed...#sarcasm #justafewoftheridiculouspostontdLately

I just posted the forum topic, but then I went and took a look at his defensive numbers. In the two seasons that he spent a lot of time playing the outfield for the St. Louis Cardinals, he was very good defensively, at least according to dWAR. If they don't want to go with Hicks at the start of the season, then Robinson and Schafer could be a pretty nice platoon defensively in CF. Guys that can make up a little bit for the range in the corners.

Let's not pretend that Revere is a superb CF, cause he is not.  He belongs in a corner OF spot.
