Down on the Farm: A no-hitter and lots of hot sluggers

There have been two series so far for the Twins and each one has produced the same result, a Twins win. Minnesota is tied with the Chicago White Sox for first place in the Central Division. It is very early in the season but the Twins are finding ways to keep games close and to come out victorious.   Aaron Hicks isn't in the minor leagues any more and there were some struggles in his first week in the majors. He did knock in the go-ahead run for the Twins in Sunday's game. It was a big hit for t

Weekend Thoughts

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   The Twins won the final two games of the weekend series and now sit at 4-2. They have won both series in this young season and now will head to Kansas City for three games. The starting pitching has been surprisingly good and the bullpen has been solid. The offense has produced some big hits. If everyone starts to hit consistently, the Twins' offense could be above-average. They have been fun to watch, which is not something I could have said

Game 5 - Everybody Wins.

Didn't listen to the Twins game. Had the chance to see the Timberwolves play, and I was lucky enough to see the game where Coach Adelman got his 1000 career victory.   The Twins won, too. In our social media world, you never miss the baseball game. My friend and I tuned into it on the radio on the car ride to the game, when things still seemed sluggish for the team in blue. I learned they had taken the lead from a Twins tweet texted directly to my phone, and I learned the game was tied up when

Twins Birthdays--April 7

Also posted at wgom.org   Bobby Mitchell (1955) Ricky Bones (1969)   Outfielder Robert Van Mitchell was with the Twins from 1982-1983. He was born in Salt Lake City, went to high school in Chatsworth, California, and was drafted by the Dodgers in the seventh round in 1977. He hit for a high average every year in the minors; his lowest average was .292 with AA San Antonio in 1978, and his highest was .327 with AAA Albuquerque in 1979. He drew a decent number of walks as well, although he had n

Wow Josh Roenicke

It was another fun Minnesota Twins game to watch!! You had everything from both teams, and it just so happens the big blunder was made on the opposing team. I am not going to make this long by any means as we all watched the game, but I did want to point out some observations that I am a bit worrisome about, and some observations that I am excited about.   1. Josh Roenicke was fricken awesome!! He was in control every batter for 3 innings. He looked like he was a machine, same delivery, s

Twins Minor League Report: Sano warms, Kernels cool.

The Twins just got back over .500 (again) while a top prospect is starting to heat up.     There was a lot going on in the minor leagues today. You can read about it and catch up (or comment) here.   After taking in three Kernels games in Cedar Rapids, Seth is driving back to reality tonight. So I'm pinch-writing.   Like any back-of-the-rotation starter, you'll have to put up with me once (and sometimes twice) a week. I'm on Twitter, if you're into that sort of th

Opinion Versus Fact

One of the things we all do is state an opinion believing or suggesting it is fact. Often on this site and others, certain opinions often are treated as fact, even though they often aren't even all that well supported by the evidence. The latest opinion to be treated as fact is that it is much better to bat Mauer 2nd than third. It seems to be believed that batting him 2nd instead of Dozier/Carroll will create 1.5 or more wins for the Twins this coming year. Lets look at this for a bit.   Mo

This Day in Twins History - April 6

Originally posted at Twinstrivia.com | TWINS TRIVIA is hopefully a fun and informative site that will help you to better enjoy the Minnesota Twins and their wonderful history.   4/6/1951 - Twins pitching great and MLB Hall of Famer Rik Aalbert "Bert" Blyleven was born on this day in Zeist, Netherlands. Blyleven, now a Twins TV color commentator makes a big deal about his birthday and seems to mention his birthday on every Twins telecast and can tell you on any day of the year how many days it is

Game 4 - Everything Awful Returns

A day after imaging a Twins path to the playoffs, everything awful I was expecting from the team showed up for 9 innings of baseball. Mauer didn't get a hit. The starting pitcher didn't go 5 innings. The bullpen gave out like a bad back.   To top it off, the sky filled with snow while the game was on. I didn't catch much of this one - just enough to give me the idea that Liam Hendriks might be a threat to my blood pressure this year.   Snow after opening day is like getting your Christmas list t

Refreshing- Random Thoughts after series 1

Last year, based on the 2011 season, I was looking at the preview to 2012.   http://twinsdaily.com/blogs/rogrulz30/328-twins-first-35-games-some-futures-bets-mlb.html   I couldn't help but look at how tough the schedule was, but we got to open against the Orioles, which I thought we could compete against. 0-3 NOOOOOOO, now we play the next 18 games against teams that are better than us, and it went into a tailspin after the first 21 games. This year after one series is refreshing. Very

A Cautionary Tale in Cedar Rapids

Kernels fans and Twins fans, alike, can’t help but be excited about the number of highly rated prospects included in the initial Cedar Rapids roster this season. Of the 25 active members of the Kernels’ Opening Day roster, 14 of them received signing bonuses in excess of $100,000 when they signed their names to their first contract with the Twins organization. Altogether, those 14 players signed on for over $12 million in signing bonus money. Three current players received $1 million or more to

Friday Mailbag (4/5/2013)!!!!!

What's more pathetic than a person writing questions to himself and then answering them, pretending all along that it is some hilarious endeavor or insightful method of talking about baseball? Not sure I can answer that question. Here's a (fake) mailbag instead.   How do you feel about Joe Mauer batting zecond? Love the podcast.   ~Brad S. (Twin Cities, MN)   I don't have a podcast. Yet...   Also, I assume you mean batting second. I am cool with

Wha Happened? #1 (v.s. Tigers)

In an effort to keep my blogging on a more consistent time-line, I have decided that rather than writing when the mood strikes me (or when I sigh dispiritedly at my inactivity), I will try to post short recaps of each series after they wrap up--this way I have a regular time to write and a consistent subject to write about. Of course, while lots of people will tell you what happened, only we Peanuts can tell you what happened...in our imagination! Game 1 Tigers 4-Twins 2 When the game time te

Runaway Optimism

Yes, I heard the postgame show which pointed out the Twins were above .500 for the first time since 2010. I have seen the positive comments about the starting pitchers and their success so far this season. I do believe this team is improved and I think they are due for better luck after two disastrous seasons where any luck they had was bad luck.   This is a club that will be hard-pressed to exceed 70 wins without more than one positive surprise. Three full games have yielded 17 strikeouts

2013 Rock Cats Annual Welcome Home Dinner: Who is Jason Christian???

[Originally published at Twins Fan From Afar]   This was my second year attending the Rock Cats' Annual Welcome Home Dinner. The players attend this function shortly after arriving in Connecticut. In fact, some don't even have housing or vehicles arranged yet! It's truly a crazy time of year for these guys. Last year, I had the good fortune of sitting with Twins' top prospect Alex Wimmers at this charity event that raises funds for the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Wimmers was kind, fun
