Musings about Oswaldo Arcia's debut

Last night (April 15) Oswaldo Arcia made his major league debut. He was called up by Minnesota when Wilkin Ramirez went on the paternity list. With the bat Arcia did better than another Twins outfielder making his debut this month, Aaron Hicks. Arcia singled his first time up and then flied out twice. With the glove, he did worse, dropping a fly ball in his only chance in left field.   I keep the uniform-number list for the Twins and, for now on my website (http://milkeespress.com/twinsnumbers.h

Enough Messing Around, It's Time to Move Mauer to Leadoff

http://www.rantsports.com/mlb/files/2013/04/Mauer1.jpgPeter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports   He has hit third in the batting order and is now being asked to hit in the number two spot. He has a career .323 batting average, a .405 on-base percentage and averages 84 walks and 73 strikeouts a year. If you haven’t figured out by the headline or the description, the player being described is Joe Mauer. For the Minnesota Twins, Mauer stands as their franchise player, their starting catcher, normall

Will There Be A #21 Hanging Next To #42?

Hey all,   I was captivated by the story of Jackie Robinson. His contributions to American society outweigh his accomplishments on the field. But could the same be said for Roberto Clemente and his influence on behalf of Latino ballplayers, and the manner in which he lived and died, off the field? If any jersey number is worthy of the honor bestowed on #42, it is #21. I have studied Clemente's influence over the years, and would recommend the following title to any serious fan of the game, and i

He spent less than two years in the minors, coming up to what was now the Minnesota Twins for a couple of months in 1961 and making the team to stay out of spring traini

Finding solutions for struggling Aaron Hicks

With the Twins struggling to find offense in the club's games this weekend, there have been a few boo birds roosting in the stands at Target Field. Some of these might be angry fans sitting out at a cold baseball game with nothing better to do. For others, it could be the frustration of the last couple of seasons coming to a head.   Aaron Hicks has found himself in a bit of a rough patch to start his MLB career. According to FanGraphs version of WAR, Hicks has been the worst player in all of bas

Game 12 - God Bless the Rules.

I'm happy the Twins won 8-2 over the Angels on a cold and snowy night. I'm even happy Brendan Harris got a home run for the Angels. I always had a soft spot for him when he was a Twin, even if he did find himself on the losing end of an on-field squirrel attack.   Mostly, I'm thankful that tonight there was a patch of my fair city where people gathered together to watch an ordered, fair, and safe contest. More people watched the event on their televisions, and other (like me) listened on the ra

The Curious Case of Chris Colabello

After two straight 90+ loss seasons and a cool start to 2013, a lot of attention has shifted to the Twins promising stockpile of prospects. Plenty has been written about top prospect Miguel Sano and last year's 2nd overall pick Byron Buxton, but this post will take a look at a lesser known "prospect" in 29 year old Chris Colabello. At this time last year, I had never heard of Colabello. In fact, it wasn't until the Twins fell out of contention and I started aggressively following minor league

Apocalypse Now: A 6000 Square Foot Video Screen at Wrigley Field

Mercy, An Associated Press article reveals plans for major revisions at the "The Friendly Confines." http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/mlb/202993011.html   This is dreadful. I was at the first night game at Target Field, and sat in the upper deck behind home plate, when Scotty Baker outdueled Zack Greinke, and Willie Bloomquist's defense, under the lights. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIN/MIN201004160.shtml   I will remember the game forever--and the feeling of overstimulation.

Quick quiz hotshot....(For the sake of speculation)

What if Arcia goes all Wilson Ramos during the Angels series? Can you justify sending him down with your starting CF hitting right around Courtney James' and Antoine Broxsie's combined GPA? If Arcia shows a glimmer of his AAA stats, it's time to give the Mastro a good shin guard and let him roam CF for at least the next couple months, while Hicks builds his confidence in AAA. So where do you put Arcia, you might ask? I'm thinking as a DH/RF platoon with Parmelee as Doumit is hitting about as

Twins on Twitter UPDATE

Since I initially posted a Twins on Twitter blog a couple of months ago, I have updated their Follower counts a couple of times. It is interesting to see which players have increased their Twitter followers the most, by count or by percentage. (Please consider following some of the below links to player and personnel accounts)   Also, a few more players have put themselves out there on social media, so they have been added to the list.   Finally, I started a list to show each Twins minor league

He then had an excellent year as a starter in 1971, a year he split
