Shamelessly Exploiting Kevin Correia's Hot Start for Pageviews

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   Do you like meaningless stats? Do you enjoy cherry-picking? How about fallacy?   Are you enamored with Kevin Correia and his shockingly awesome start to this season?   Do you like being asked questions?   I thought it might be fun to look at Kevin Correia's stats, with an eye toward history and multiplication. If you think that sounds fun as well, please keep reading.   Pro-rated stats   The Twins have played 22 games this season. Correia has

11-11 What the next 21 games will tell us!!

2 more @ Tigers 3 @ Indians 4 @ Red Sox 3 vs Orioles 3 Vs White Sox 3 @ Braves 3 vs Red Sox Combined Record 65-64 .504   Looking at what has happened so far this year being 11-11, I find the next 21 games very important on a lot of ways in my opinion. We have a .500 record now, we play decent teams with a combined record of what we do. I think a lot can happen good or bad.   I really want the Twins to play meaningful games in the months of August. I am encouraged in a few ways wat

Twins Birthdays--April 30

Also posted at wgom.org   Ken Retzer (1934) Jeff Reboulet (1964)   Catcher Kenneth Leo Retzer did not play for the Twins, but was in their farm system in 1965. He was born in Wood River, Illinois and signed with Cleveland as a free agent in 1954. He began in Class D and rose very slowly. He hit for good averages most years, but with very little power. He reached Class A in 1956, but then missed 1957 due to military service. When he came back in 1958, he was once again in Class A. He got to

How valuable is Eduardo Escobar?

When the Twins traded Francisco Liriano to the Chicago White Sox last July, it seemed like the club was getting a bag of balls and some chewing gum in return. There wasn't much to get excited about with names like Pedro Hernadez and Eduardo Escobar. Flashforward a couple of months later and it is starting to look more and more like the Twins got some servicable players.   Escobar has built himself a nice little niche in the Twins clubhouse. Manager Ron Gardenhire uses him as a late inning defens

Ozzie Guillen, Twins Manager in 2014??

Hey all,   This is a crazy idea, but why not?   Ron Gardenhire's contract is up at the end of this year, and if the Twins Way winds up producing another 90 loss season, it may be time to shake up the culture of Twins Nation.   Ozzie Guillen would do that in a flash.   Consider the wave of Latino talent moving up through the Twins system. Ozzie might fit in well with a changing clubhouse. He is popular with the local media, who ate up his Pirhanna quotes:   "All those piranhas -- blooper here, bl

There's no Punting in Baseball

From time to time, I pause in my pursuit of the goofiest possible photoshops, to write things about other things. Such writing reflects my opinions and is not reflective of the opinions of editors at Twins Daily or readers like you. I hope it inspires questions and discussion, and if it simply irritates you, don't worry I'll be back to the photoshops soon.   As you may know, people really like sports. Lots of people. Millions of people. And they like it so much that they will furiously dissect t

Q & A with JD Williams

Cedar Rapids Kernels outfielder JaDamion (J.D.) Williams is in his fourth season with the Minnesota Twins organization. He was drafted by the Twins in the 10th round of the 2010 amateur draft.   After a very productive 2011 season at Rookie League level Elizabethton, where he hit .324, Williams hit only .237 for the Beloit Snappers a year ago and accumulated an on-base percentage of .311.   In his second year in the Midwest League, Williams is off to a much better start for the Kernels.   Hittin

Also posted at wgom.org   Ron Washington (1952)   Infielder Ronald Washington was with the Twins from 1981-1986. Born and raised in New Orleans, Washington signed with Kansas City as a free agent in 1970. He was in the Royals’ system for six years, only one of them higher than Class A, and did nothing of any particular note apart from play several positions; he was used as a catcher, outfielder, shortstop, and second baseman. Washington was traded to the Dodgers after the 1976 season. He thr

Weekend Thoughts - 4/28/2013

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   The Twins split their four-game series with Texas this weekend. Unfortunately, I missed the Sunday game due to something called "Couples Shower." I was not aware of such thing, but have since decided that these should be outlawed completely. I won a game of Bingo where all the numbers were replaced with wedding terms. I was told I could pick any prize I wanted, so I chose "watching the Twins' game." This was met with laughter, which was follow

Ranger/Twins - Punch for Punch (Games 18-21)

RANGERS AT HOME   Have Cap, Will Travel (Game 18)   Took the wife to Wits at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, where Michael Ian Black joined the show for the evening. Black is a comedic laser so sharp you can correct people’s vision with his jokes.   Wits projects tweets onto the wall before the performance and at intermission. Couple tweeters in attendance used the board as a way of checking the score. Caught a couple Twins caps and jackets in the audience, too.   The Wits performance was o

Anatomy of a Rock Cats Win & Postgame Conversation with James Beresford

It was a picture perfect night for baseball in Connecticut. No, our winter didn't extend into late April, as it did in Minnesota, but this was one of the first days where it actually would have made sense to wear t-shirts and shorts around town. 4,615 were in attendance this evening as the Rock Cats took on the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e41-TQ7qT2U/UXxd5AiKX0I/AAAAAAAAAhs/bic6EGOIviU/s320/IMAG0430.jpg [TD

20 Games and Potential Logjams

The Twins have hit the 20 game milestone and are a breakeven 10-10. Considering the pessimism going into the season, we Twins fans should be happy with the results. Some raw numbers: Run differential is -6. Team ERA is 3.92, the Twins have scored 83 runs despite only 13 homers and a league-worst slugging percentage. They are 5-2 in one-run games and have allowed only 11 homers, second best in the AL. Many of these stats can't be sustained--they will allow more homers and win fewer close ga
