He was born in Oelwein, Iowa, but attended high school in San Diego. He signed with the Twins as a free agent in 1965. He both started and relieved in the minors. He did not look like anything special in his first couple of years, but in 1967, used exclusively out of the bullpen, he went 5-2, 1.32 in 41 innings in Class A Orlando.
