Episode 57: The Hot Stove, and other wives tales.

http://assets.podomatic.net/ts/19/ad/da/paulpleiss/1400x1400-0x0+0+0_8924187.jpg This week Eric and Paul are joined by Jay Corn (@jay__corn, that's right, two underscores!) to talk Twins baseball. This will be our fist dive into the post-season hot stove, and this week we talked about available starting pitching and which pitchers we thought, if any, made sense in Minnesota. Pedro Hernandez was removed from the 40-man roster and signed a AAA deal, Terry Ryan is putting the band back together, so

1994 Offseason in Review

Avoiding rookie renovation mistakes

They say the best way to learn is by making mistakes, but an even better way to learn is by learning from others’ mistakes. That way you get all the knowledge without the bitter tinge of regret. Another way of saying this is, “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” which in this context means there are a lot of renovators and designers out there who have likely done a project similar to the one you’re planning on attempting. Don’t feel like you have to make it up as you go along, instead, utiliz

blueprint

I will proceed in two parts. The first one is a realistic prediction for how the Twins might navigate in this offseason. The second is what I think I might do if I were actually the GM.   First scenario:   Trade Ryan Doumit to the Texas Rangers for RH SP Nick Martinez. Justification: unless the Rangers strike gold and land McCann, resign AJ, Soto, Murphy, and Cruz, and refrain from trading anyone else, it looks like a cheap DH/C/RF option with a potentially good enough bat might be something the

Would Twins Be in WS if?

The below list is from the Twins 2013 Minor League All Stars. The question is:   If the 2013 statistical numbers of the MiLB players on this list were projected to possible similar numbers in 2016 @ the MLB level - Would the Twins be in the World Series? Take into account that the MiLB players are probably 20 - 30+ games short of an official MLB season as it pertains to numbers.   CF Byron Buxton SS Jorge Polanco 2B Eddie Rosario 3B Miguel Sano DH Chris Colabello C Josmil Pinto 1B Dalton Hicks

The 2013 Twins By the Only Stat that Matters (Pt. 3: Pitchers & Front Office)

This is the first in a series of three articles evaluating the Twins 2013 Season. First we introduced the stat, then we used it to analyze hitters, finally we'll use it to analyze pitchers and staff members. Anyone can evaluate a player's performance in the field, but what about their performance in the field of entertainment? The Twins completed their third straight 90-loss season, but rather than chastise the unproductive and cheer the talented, I'm here to praise the players who made it fun t

Using MLB 13: The Show to Replay the 2013 Twins Season

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   Back in March, I took a stab at previewing the upcoming 2013 Minnesota Twins season using MLB 13: The Show. It was a hoot. I used the game to see how the Twins would fare as a team and how some of their players would perform during the upcoming season. If you look back at that preview, you'll see that Sony had a very different view for some very important Twins players. I enjoyed the exercise, and enjoyed the residual pageviews that I received

Second Base: Dozier or Rosario?

For the past 15 years, calling the Minnesota Twins middle infield a "revolving door" would be an understatement. However, the Twins currently possess a rising star at second base as well as a top prospect who will most likely be ready to compete in 2015.   In the near future, the Twins are going to have to make a decision regarding the 2nd base position for the future. The question that Twins fans everywhere are asking is, "will it be Dozier or Rosario?" It will be an interesting decision that w

Stasis

In most science fiction shows I have seen, somebody is in stasis (I hope I spelled it right and I am using it correctly). That means that the person or creature in question is in an unchanged state as time goes by.   It is my opinion that the Twins basically spent 2013 in stasis. I expected at the start of 2013 the Twins would move some veterans, find out about some prospective regulars and start in the development of a starting rotation. None of that happened. almost all of what was unset

Parmelee and Plouffe Disappoint

As part of the Twins Daily preseason preview, I took an in-depth look at Chris Parmelee and Trevor Plouffe as they headed into the 2013 season. Going into the season, both former first round draft picks figured to get extended playing time. The hope for Twins fans was for each of these players to show some of the potential they had shown while playing at the Triple-A level.   Plouffe showed some impressive power in 2012 with 24 home runs and 19 doubles. He had a career high .756 OPS and it looke

Perkins slump mystery revealed

So that’s why Glen Perkins threw so badly in the latter stages of the season. Twins insiders revealed yesterday our closer underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on 1 October to fix medial meniscus in his right knee, an issue that had been troubling the 30-year-old for some time.   Thankfully, it appears no lasting damage was caused from two months of pitching through the pain and since the surgery Perkins revealed he has felt fine. But it is nevertheless a concern for MLB betting fans on bet365, f

This is the first in a series of three articles evaluating the Twins 2013 Season. First we introduce the stat, then we use it to analyze hitters, then we use it to analyze pitchers. There's plenty of time to dissect the Twins' season, and there are plenty of people to do it. Cutting Out Collisions Could Help Mauer

One of the questions facing the Minnesota Twins and their fans this offseason is the future of Joe Mauer. The All-Star catcher and face of the franchise didn't play a game after August 19th because of concussion related symptoms. With the Twins heading for their third straight 90-loss season, there was no need to rush Mauer back to the field.   When the Twins head to Florida this spring, there will continue to be questions about how much time Mauer should play at catcher. Catchers are in the lin
