Some thoughts

As this season comes to an end, I look back at how the season played out. Sad to say, there was only one ray of light, and that was Brian Dozier. The kid worked hard over the off season, weathered a tough patch at the beginning of the season, and in my opinion, has captured second base for years to come. But still, I remain cautiously optimistic that the turnaround will stay for many years. Scott Diamond did nothing but regress, and in all reality, was probably never fully recovered from the inj

Paul Molitor Talks Sano, Buxton, & the Organization Being Open to New Ideas

I'm not sure how much others in the organization are on the same page as Paul Molitor, but he is in the organization and a person gaining more and more influence.   He was interviewed on 1500espn Thursday.   Bullet List: - Robinson Cano getting $305M - Dozier and Arcia are bright spots. - Dozier should hit around .270 when all said and done. - Twins Front Office being open to putting something exciting on the field, point blank, seeing if young players can play - Miguel Sano - 50% he's in the

Awardin' 2013: The American League!

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   Welcome back to Award Season! In my previous installment, I handed out the major NL awards. If you missed it, click here. I also lamented the lack of an actual Awards Ceremony for these important honors. Think of the bowties and suspenders we are missing out on! Danny Valencia would look great in a suit, but he wouldn't get invited to the ceremony so we're kind of just back where we started, aren't we?   AL Breakout Player   Preseason Pick -

No more room in the Twins Inn-OF

As AA Twins become AAA Twins, Room for AAAA players is becoming more scarce. With many 30 plus "prospects" called up this year, and several more failing to get called from Rochester, there will be many players released into oblivion this off season. Before even considering Free Agents (Please Ryan, Sign some Free Agents) If I was General Manager, I would have to make the following decisions:   Part One: OUTFIELD Currently the Twins have Clete Thomas, Wilkin Ramirez, Alex Presley, Oswaldo Arcia,

Acquiring Talent the Twins Way: Terry Ryan vs. the AL (part 3 of 3)

Resuming where we left off, we're now going to compare the Twins' successes in the 6 methods of talent acquisition versus the rest of the American League.   Part 1: here Part 2: here Data: here   TWINS VS AMERICAN LEAGUE   1. Amateur Draft   We already know the Twins have acquired the most positional talent and the 2nd most pitching talent from the Amateur draft, as measured by WAR. But roster space is limited. How does the average Amateur Draftee stack up against the rest of the AL?   http://i.

A Season Blank and Pitiless as the Sun (Twins versus Tigers - Games 156-158)

Look Upon Mauer and Tremble (Twins 4 Tigers 3-- Game 156)   Mauer's out for the season, like we all knew he would be. Concussion City gains a new resident. And this Pinto kid seems like he's ready to play some catcher. People wonder if Mauer can come back to put on the tools of ignorance. People wonder if Mauer can come back at all.   The M and M boys are gone, leaving Target Field empty like a Halloween candy bowl. Mauer seems likely to be back in some way, shape, or form. Morneau's probably go

Gardenhire Already Re-Hired?

Bruce Brothers' Pioneer Press column on Tuesday's loss contains this quote from GM Terry Ryan, regarding the need to upgrade the 2014 staff:   "I would like to think I'm going to be able to get Gardy some people here."   http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_24169672/minnesota-twins-have-plenty-issues-91st-loss   This seems to confirm rumors about Gardy's future contract status raised by ESPN 1500's Wolfson, and provides the most clear evidence to date that, at the very least, a one-year extension

Acquiring talent the Twins Way: pitchers (part 2 of 3)

In Part 1, we looked at the Twins history of acquiring positional talent via the Amateur Draft, Amateur Free Agency, the Rule 5 Draft, Trades, Waivers, and Free Agency, during the Terry Ryan era (1995-2013). Here we will do the same for pitchers.   PITCHERS   1. Amateur Draft   Since 1995, the Twins trail only the Toronto Blue Jays in their reliance on the Amateur Draft for pitching talent, getting 136 player-seasons from 39 pitchers, good for 120 WAR. Notably, Brad Radke owns a full third (45.5

Liam Hendriks Deserves Another Chance

Plenty of Twins players will have things to reflect on this coming offseason. When a team has multiple 90-loss seasons in a row, changes are likely and some of those situations started to play themselves out. Minnesota needs pitchers to stand out in the final games of the season as the team tries to figure out the future.   Liam Hendriks is one player on shaky ground for 2014. The team rushed him to the big leagues as a 22-year old and struggles followed him since he got called up. Next season,

Acquiring talent the Twins Way: position players (part 1 of 3)

Last Friday Terry Ryan spoke to Paul Allen about Free Agency:     Free Agency is only one of the 6 most common methods of acquiring talent. The others are the Amateur Draft, Amateur Free Agency, Rule 5 Draft, Trades, and Waivers. Using Baseball-references Player registry data, I will examine the Twins' successes at acquiring positional talent via these 6 methods during the period 1995-2013 - the Terry Ryan era. Ryan Doumit Lovefest: Talk to Contact ep 52

Episode 52 of the Twins baseball podcast, Talk To Contact (@TalkToContact), is now available for download via iTunes or by clicking here.   Eric spends most of this episode belittling Ryan Doumit and then trying to convince me that Doumit should play more often than I think is reasonable. We talk about Twins prospect Tyler Jones and wonder aloud what the roles will be for players like Doumit, Josh Willingham, Trevor Plouffe and Chris Parmelee. Twins Keep Faith with Berrios

After a modest season at Class A Ceder Rapids, Minnesota Twins pitching prospect, J.O. Berrios, will not participate in the Puerto Rican Winter League this offseason; instead, the youngster will get himself ready for next season.     The 19-year old recorded an 18.00 run average in two relief outings for Puerto Rico at the World Baseball Classic, striking out Robinson Cano. But playing in that tournament put Berrios a couple of weeks behind once he returned to Minnesota camp and he was forced t

Examining Twins Managerial Candidates

There is less than a week left in the regular season and the Twins don't have a manager under contract for 2014. With Minnesota on their way to a third straight 90-loss, there are questions about whether Ron Gardenhire deserves another opportunity at the helm. He won 2010's AL Manager of the Year but things have been ugly since that season.   Since Tom Kelly was hired in 1987, the Twins have employed two managers so change has been far from commonplace. Terry Ryan cleared out most of Gardenhire'
