I'm pretty immersed in multiple team fanbases, and I'd put the Twins somewhere in the middle. They're not a bad fanbase overall, but they're not the Cardinals, Brewers, Padres, etc. They're also not the Diamondbacks, or any of the Florida teams. The Twins could easily be the Brewers or Padres, but they'd need new ownership to do that. Honestly, that's the difference right there: competent, consistent ownership that either spends (Padres), hires the correct people every time (Brewers), or does both (Cardinals).

It's more than that, though. He's not just prone to typical fluctuations; he is literally a bad pitcher for prolonged periods of time. Overall, he's a good - not great - reliever because of it. I asked Sam to write the counterpoint to this because tons of Twins writers are fawning over Hoffman. We run a Blue Jays site, and I've watched Hoffman pretty closely for the past two years. While ERA isn't the end-all, be-all for relievers (in fact, I tell people not to use it at all 95% of the time), it is extremely important to note whether a reliever's ERA is bad because of three true outcomes, and Hoffman's is. He generally starts and ends his own innings. He's giving up home runs and walks. He has earned every bit of his ERA, and that means we should not ignore some significant red flags with him.
