The Twins don't need to trade Paddach. Rather a smart move might be to trade Castro. One, Castro has value and should generate the return of something meaningful to the Twins. Certainly more than Paddach at this time. And two, if that return is a younger player he should reduce payroll by $5M or so. Granted it was awhile ago, but Paddach was a very good pitcher. Another year removed from his injuries and he just might be good again. And if he is, he is still relatively young. The smart move for the Twins is to roll the dice and see how he does the first half of the season. If he does well, they just might get a good return as the trading deadline approaches while also saving a third of his salary. Trading Castro also doesn't have a major effect on the team the Twins field as they have several younger, cheaper players who are likely to produce the same as can be expected from Willie. Kiersey, Martin and Helman should be solid both at the plate and in the field. It is probable that one of the three will be Castro's equal in 2025. And Kearschall just might be a future star who can play both on the dirt and in the outfield. With this said, I will probably read in tomorrow's Strib that Paddach was traded this evening.

Interesting and certainly can be differing opinions. Personally, I like Larnach a lot and believe that had he not dealt with his foot injury much of the year his numbers would have been even better. Also agree with others that Matthews may be higher than he should. But where do you put a kid with his ride the last year or so? After all, its your list Nick and I for one will just sit back and enjoy the read, thanks.

Interesting, Nick. Always enjoy this annual exercise. Found it interesting that you did not show Julien as 2B-1B. Really believe that if his future is longer than very short with the Twins, much of it will be as a first baseman. Just too many better prospects here or arriving that play second. Was shocked with the results SWR had last summer. Totally unexpected, at least for me. I will need another season to be convinced what we saw will be long term. Really hope it is, BUT?

The kid was young with limited experience. So he didn't set the world on fire in his partial rookie season. The result, most commenters have assigned him to the junk pile. I see a kid with a ton of ability, just not the type y'all would like to see. Given a year or two to mature and I believe we will see a valuable big league player. Just not your typical power guy.

Like the list, Cody. Thanks. Of the three, the one who excites me the most is Winokur. When combining his physical assets with his baseball strengths you get a player who could be special. Very special. Will agree with those above who believe Prielipp should be on this list. I continue to believe he can put his injury history behind him, beginning this year. When he does, he will soon be the #1 pitching prospect in the organization. Although he may no longer be a prospect a year from now, I continue being excited about Canterino. We all have seen how fantastic he can be, albeit in only short spurts every year or so. I am surprised the Twins continue keeping him on the 40-man. Because they have tells me they believe he will both be healthy in 2025 and they view him as someone who can be successful for the big league club. I expect, however, because of his limited innings the past few years he will be in the Twins pen come summer.

Have always liked McCann, so this would be interesting. Must question your comment, however, that signing him for $4M would give them financial flexibility. As I understand, trading Vazquez and signing McCann would bring their budget into balance. So they would still need to move Paddack to find some dollars to fill another need.

Way to little known by us about Julien's D. If he could be average, and the Twins have a strong belief that he will, I would go with Eddie and Miranda platooning. Gotta believe that if Miranda spends three-quarters if spring training working at first he will be at least serviceable. With this duo the defense could be average, at best. If both puts their sophomore year struggles behind them, their bats could be between good and very good...or not.

I always enjoy reading pieces like this as they usually bring a smile. And that's good as there aren't a lot of those of late. I wasn't expecting much from SWR as the Twins season began. Turns out he did a heck of a lot better than I expected. Don't have a clue what that means for the future, but I suspect he will be in the hunt for the #4 or #5 slot with three others, Paddack, Festa and Matthews. Hopefully, at least three of them have very good years in 2025. Will one of those be SWR?

Interesting seeing Raley on that list. Do you remember, Seth, that unbelievable season he had at Rochester back whenever? Or was it a part of a season? When I think about how good Jax and Ober were, gotta feel they got shortchanged. They had to be every bit as good as several of those guys around $1M.

Interesting, Nick. But I don't see trading either happen until July. Why? The Twins still don't know for certain what Festa, Matthews, etc., will be. By July they should know which of their top prospects are for real and if any of those young bats are hitting like they should (and didn't in September). I see some minor fine tuning this winter, then a bigger move come July.

Curious what people were saying about Johann when he joined the Twins following the Rule 5 draft however many years ago. Guess time will tell, but maybe the Twins are do a bit of luck?

If traded, whether that is good or bad will depend on the player(s) returned, not the $$$ savings. Yes, the dollars saved will help fill out the rest of the team. But they have to get value in return, preferably at least one player ready, or nearly ready, to play. But they shouldn't stop there. The Twins have lots of depth at starting pitching and middle infielders. Yet, they don't have a top defensive shortstop, if Correa is traded, anybody you want to see at first base or a good left handed reliever. So trading Paddack and one of those excess infielders seems to me to be additional moves that need to be made. The excess infielders in my book are Julien and MIranda as I want to see them keep Lewis, Lee and Keaschall.

During the last offseason, both the Lynx and Wild were thought to do very little. Guerin was dealing with a bigger salary problem than the Twins. And he had a team that missed the playoffs for the first time in awhile. So he completes a couple deals and brings in a couple guys who were solid, but certainly not big parts of any team. The Lynx did much of the same. The results were the Lynx being one shot away from a championship and the Wild are currently the best team in the NHL (I continue to wonder how this is true). The Twins have a talented roster. Their biggest needs are relatively minor, with the biggest being a need to cut maybe 5% of their current salary. Yes, Paddack or Vazquez are the most logical financial moves. But can the Twins have a disappointing winter and wonderful summer? I expect we will see a disappointing winter. Can they have a wonderful summer?

Interesting titles for the hitting coaches, Seth. There are two hitting coaches and one assistant. Would think there would be a hitting coach, Borgschulte, and the other two would be assistants?

All indications are that this winter is going to be an interesting one. I cringe when I think of an outfield with Larnach and Wallner on the corners, especially when Buxton isn't in center. Considering most moves the Twins make could be via trades, I wonder if one of Larnach or Wallner be on their way out? Would sure help their overall defense if only one of that pair is out there come opening day. Should that happen, the likelihood of ERod making the opening day roster just got better.

Twins Daily 2025 Top Prospects: #3 Luke Keaschall, INF
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
My first thought is that the Twins have a need at first base. And Keaschall played a fair amount of first last season. But isn't it best that first basemen are taller? You mentioned that he is shorter. How short is he? And won't that be a negative at first base? With that said, I love this kid and hope that he becomes that player who is as good as anyone, yet doesn't have the hype of a Lewis, Lee or Jenkins. -

Are Trevor Larnach And Matt Wallner Redundent?
rdehring replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To some extent, yes. If I were to choose, would keep Wallner over Larnach. Believe he is under team control a year or so longer. Larnach also tends to get injured too much. Whereas Larnach is a solid bat with marginal defense, Wallner could be special in two areas of his game. Although limited defensively, he has a cannon. He also has massive power, which gives him the edge in my opinion. Personally, would feel much better about the Twins if two of their three outfielders are very good defensively. That ain't the case if both of these guys are in the corners. -
The Path to an Elite Minnesota Twins Bullpen in 2025
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article, Nick, thanks. Count me among those hoping Jax stays where he is and Varland also understands his future is in a bullpen where he could be very, very good. I have believed since early summer that Duran's lack of spring training and missing the first month plus of the season was the reason he wasn't his normal self. As you mentioned, believe they need one outside left-handed arm that is solid. Then if Moran recovers and is good, that is gravy. Am intrigued that Canterino remains on the 40-man. If they didn't believe he could be healthy in 2025 gotta believe he would have been removed by now. And if this young man can finally be healthy he could be a huge add to the pen by early summer.- 47 replies

Great report, Seth. Heck, Fantastic, thanks. Ober, Varland, Festa, Matthews, Morris, etc., etc., etc. Have one question bouncing around my brain. The Twins are doing something I don't recall they have ever done. That's drafting and developing top notch starting pitching. Lots of it. Which is it, Seth? Is it their scouting and finding these guys in the lower part of the top ten rounds of the draft? Or is it their development of these arms? Maybe it is a bit of both, but I am elated at how well management has been developing these kids.
