  1. Buxton. Why, look at their record when he plays and doesn't play. if they can get 140 games a year out of him, he could be an MVP one of these years.
  2. Thanks Chief, got a good laugh out of that one. I guess the answer is having Donaldson take hitting lessons from Sano. Strike out most of the time so he can walk back to the dugout. When he doesn't K, he can jog around the bases for his home run.
  3. Let's stay optimistic, guys. Donaldson will take today and tomorrow off, then return Sunday where his bat makes the difference in the Twins second win of the season. Nooooooooo Way do I want to see his name on any IL, DL or any other list this early in the season.
  4. Interesting roster, Seth. With 20 pitchers, at least six are going to have to move down to AA when the season opens. To be honest, I don't see any obvious names to make that move. Who do you see moving down? I know people have wondered where Wiel is. Another player missing to me is Celestino. Any word on him, Seth? Do you think Rortvedt will stick at AAA? I think most people were expecting him to begin his season at Wichita.
  5. I disagree with the last part of your statement..."except for the most recent month or so when he was totally figured out" I don't think anyone figured anything out. If memory serves, Dobnak's pitches move a lot. What I saw beginning about the 3rd inning of that debacle in St. Louis where several weak ground balls against the shift put him in a hole. As he tried to pitch out of the jam, his ball began moving much more. And much of that movement took it so far out of the zone no one was swinging and he was constantly in a hitters count. To me, seemed something was happening, either mental or mechanical, that he couldn't get past. Expect that is now behind him and we will see the Dobber we knew prior to that game.
  6. Great signing of a guy with a wonderful story. Good for the Twins. Good for Dobnak. Gotta make his family happy knowing they are set for life. Saw that there are some bonuses included in the deal for innings pitched. Are they for the extension years only? Or also included in the initial five years? Could be very important for Dobber. Am beginning to have a feeling that we won't see an extension for Berrios this year or next. Is the FO beginning to plan for a staff without Jose? Expectations are so high, yet hasn't been able to do it consistently. With that said, they will probably announce his extension tomorrow.
  7. Lots of good comments. But I think I will sit back and wait to see how Rocco handles this. I like the idea I read above of Dobber stacking with say, Happ, and pitching 4-5 innings to close out his first start. But I also cringed when reading the above comment that it is a waste of his appearance if the Twins are down 4 or 5 runs when he gets into the game. Yes, these early games count as much as the last week of September. Expect by mid-season everything will have worked its way out and will be shocked if one or two of the first week's starters aren't on the IL or even no longer with the Twins. Will be equally shocked if Dobber doesn't get more than 150 innings this year, which is about the most he can be expected to provide.
  8. Dobnak was one of the Twins best pitchers last year, prior to that disaster in St. Louis after which he couldn't throw strikes. No reason to be surprised that he is having a good spring, with a new pitch making it a great spring. Will be a bloody shame if he isn't among the Twins starting 5 come opening week considering he is one of their three best starters. The Twins are a better team and will win more games if he takes the ball every fifth day. Maybe the answer is to stack him with Happ and give the rest of the bullpen the day off. That would mean they would be rested when overworked the other four days.
  9. Assuming it is 13+13, which is what Ted has above, will be interesting as heck as to the pitcher who doesn't make it. To be honest, haven't followed as close this spring to be aware that Law, whoever he is, is pitching this well. Expect that is do to not seeing any games on tv, which is another subject I don't want to think about. But who doesn't make it? Most years there will be a late injury right before breaking camp. Will that happen again? Good news is that if it is this difficult to identify the top 26, should be a strong team.
  10. Interesting. Got me thinking about the Twins record when Buxton is playing. What is it, something like winning 2 of 3 and a losing record when he isn't. Will it be something similar when Simmons plays? If so, let's pray that they aren't injured at the same time. And will it be winning 3 of 4 when both are in the lineup?
  11. Was surprised you didn't include Thorpe with the starters or relievers. All reports I have seen are that he is throwing very well this spring. Yes, he just received the 4th option and will probably begin the year in St. Paul, but he sure should have been included with the odd-men out. Gotta believe he is ahead of Smeltzer in the pecking order of next man up.
  12. Remember back when the Twins signed Polanco. Lots of hoopla about his defense, not so much about his bat. He now is respected for his bat with his defense being questionable, at least at short. Hopefully, he will turn into a gold glove second baseman. Thanks for including the career minor league honorable mentions. Gotta wonder if Zander Wiel will ever put on a Twins uniform? Curious to know who is the minor league player with the most experience, although some/most not with the Twins?
  13. Thanks for a great article, Nick, and a lively discussion. I continue to wonder why so many continue to clamor for the Twins to go out and get an ACE. In my opinion, that's exactly what they did a year ago. If Maeda isn't an ACE, well then there ain't more than one in the American League. Love the top two and depth of this starting rotation. And after coming off a season that was only 60 games long, depth is gonna be huge this year, HUGE. So I am comfortable with the staff going into the season. For that reason I assume we are going to need at least eight starters during the season, not including a few starts by callups for double headers. Will also agree with the above comments regarding Dobber, who I believe will not be the Twins #5 starter. Why, because he is gonna be their #3 or #4 best starter.
  14. Was surprised when I read your comment that the Twins payroll heading into opening day was $117M. Most reports I have seen indicated that they were close to or at $130M. Which is it?
  15. Not worried about individual performances early in spring. But it is about time that the pitching begins to put up a lot of clean innings and the hitters start scoring some runs. Time to get going, guys! Right now I don't have access to FSN or whatever it is called. But when/if I do get it, count me among those who like Morneau as the color guy. Like him a lot.
  16. Yes, agree that Luis should be the lead off man...every day. Found it interesting that you used the term 'bunt' in your piece. Got me thinking, did Rocco call for a bunt last year? Don't remember any, but if there were they were very few. Something I miss with this Twins team.
  17. With all the unknowns from COVID this year and the CBA next winter, no reason to have this discussion until next off season. Then get him locked in for a long, long time. Lots of people talk about his defense as being a problem. Yet, if memory serves he played as much or more in left field when he arrived in 2019 than any other position. And I believe his total time in left field prior to that was a few innings sometime in the lower minors. Will he ever be a great defensive player, probably not. But he ain't as bad as many here and elsewhere claim...at least when healthy and given a reasonable time to prepare in the position asked to play.
  18. Add me to the list of those hoping the Twins get Buxton extended this spring. He may be the only Twin who has a real chance at being a league MVP. Hope like heck he gets it this year and earns a lot of bonuses that may be in that extension.
  19. Has any starter given up an earned run this spring? Don't know if it will be a five or six man rotation, but the starters will be good, very good. Count me among those surprised with the release of three key minor league coordinators.
  20. My vote goes to Arraez. Keep him in the lineup at least five games a week and let him get on base at the top of the order.
  21. Will agree with the above comments that getting the 4th year option is huge, HUGE, for Thorpe. If the Twins have the luxury of moving him between St. Paul and the Twins, when needed, it will be a big plus for his development. Should put him in great shape to compete for one of the five starter spots in 2022. However, all of this will be meaningless should Thorpe continue pitching like he has throughout spring training and force the Twins to include him on the opening day roster. For many reasons, the Twins very well may have six starters on a 14-man pitching staff. No reason to believe Thorpe can't/won't be one of them.
  22. Curious as to why you didn't include Simmons with the above? Assuming he hits about what he has the last several years, I see the Twins signing him to a two year extension before this year is over. Fantastic defense along with a solid bat for a reasonable cost may be the best choice for the local 9. That also gives Lewis time to heal and get back into the game before pushing for his position on the team.
  23. Was wondering why Thorpe went only one inning, thanks for clearing that up. Speaking of Thorpe and the fourth option, today's STrib said that it is still pending an arbitrator's decision and isn't definite. Great seeing Canterino pitching like he can. Have my fingers crossed that he is the young star to be that Cleveland type callup during the season who steps in and dominates from day 1! If Broxton keeps playing like he is, does he replace Cave on the roster? Would certainly be an upgrade defensively and speed on the bases. Gotta believe they could get some type of return for Cave to a team needing help in the outfield.
  24. Will agree with those above wondering why Duffey wasn't mentioned. He could be the best of all. Also wondering who the new guy will be this year, someone like Alcala last year, Graterol the year before?
