  1. What is his velocity at? And is his command now, and in the past been a bit rough? Or has he been one of those pitchers who is intentionally and frequently trying to get swings and misses on pitches out of the zone? Which has always got to be tempting when you know the batters at your level will swing at them.
  2. It worked out for Tyler Beede who is also starting to look like a bust. Derek Fisher was also drafted fairly high his first go-round and later improved his draft position.
  3. And from reports, he sounds like he has fairly decent command, which probably means he's a "picker" and trying to be cute on the edges and off the plate. For some guys this is a bad sign that their stuff won't translate at higher levels against more selective hitters when they have to intentionally work in the zone. Then there's Jose Berrios who says screw that noise, my stuff will play.
  4. That sounds like satire to me. But also believable. I think Perkins is going to have to recover a lot of velocity to be effective. After his showing this spring and his history with his shoulder, I just don't see it happening. My guess is he'll come back with mid-80's velocity for a couple of token appearances, see that he can't make it work with that range and either call it a career or go back on the DL. And then everyone is going to flip out about which ever player was DFA'd to allow Perkins his one last shot.
  5. Glad Gonsalves is doing well. Looks like his pitches/inning are taking a bit of a step back. From 88 pitches in seven innings in the start on 5/26 to 95 pitches in six innings last start to 96 pitches in five innings yesterday. Regardless of the eye-opening stats, you know that's something the front office is going to demand improve prior to any promotion. And rightly so.
  6. Sounds like there is a bidding war for a DFA'd guy, sheesh. I'd take him if he's near free I suppose, but this bullpen's biggest issue is not being able to strike guys out when there's runners on base, Dyson doesn't do that, he's a Kintzler clone who uses his sinker near exclusively.
  7. Self fulfilling prophecy?
  8. I remember who I liked: Zach Wheeler and Jacob Turner and Aaron Crow was my favorite non-Strausburg college arm. Nailed it!
  9. ****Moderator Note***** I am going to merge this one with the previous one simply because we are likely going to have a draft tracker thread and threads regarding each of the day one picks. By merging this with the old one we'll have the one "pre-draft" thread which won't get lost in the shuffle and I know is a popular spot for posters to check out to play the Hindsight Game later.
  10. He's not gambling though, the player is. He isn't some overlord pulling the strings on all these players, they seek him out and discuss strategy with their agent. If the player wants a less risky decision Boras isn't and can't make him roll the dice.
  11. That's the narrative we always make, and I used to be in that camp. However lately I'm not; getting as much money as the player can is obviously nearly always in the player's best interest. I don't think the "greedy agent" stereotype is any more fair for him than it is for any other agent. The players still benefit the most from diligent negotiating. If Boras was hurting his clients to better himself, he wouldn't still be the pre-eminent agent and we'd be hearing horror stories from former employees and clients.
  12. It would be an easier bet (or non-bet) if we had a better read on the new front office, but at this point we have no reference to rely on for pennant chase behavior. Here in Twinsland we are accustomed to our front office making at best a token trade devoid of enough improvement to bolster the team. At this point it looks to be more of the same, but the new brain trust came from Cleveland and Texas, organizations not shy about making big(ish) trades. So, we are really just operating on assumptions at this point.
  13. It's interesting for sure, but I have a hard time seeing the Twins giving their two biggest bonuses to two HS pitchers. Not saying I'm against it (depending on who the pitchers are) but I thought all we heard about was risk aversion.
  14. I'd guess plenty of these folks aren't actually happy with him but would never admit so at the voting both or in a poll, even anonymously. At this point I'm hoping a more sane old GOP stalwart steps up in the next primary to oppose him. Lindsey Graham perhaps. McCain is probably too old. Then these voters who are quietly disgusted but who would never admit as much wouldn't have to be "wrong" about Trump, they just found another GOPer who's "better". Maybe Boehner gets back into the mix. Yuck, can't believe I just typed that.
  15. Even if we can't tell by the ratings, we may be able to determine it based on awards and water cooler attention. AMC let Breaking Bad and Mad Men end when the creators said their story had been told in it's entirety. They were still Emmy darlings when they folded up shop. Kudos to AMC for not pushing harder for longer runs. But judging by their current stable of shows, I'd bet they are now conflicted, it's hard to get that kind of qualify consistently. No doubt Netflix has seen that. HoC and OitNB should have already wrapped, but for all I know the creators were also wanting to tell more of the story even if it should have been over.
  16. Watched episode one late last night. Looks like more of the same of Season 3&4; I'll push on though. Thought they would have announced this would be the final season but I haven't seen anything so I'd guess not. It's going to be interesting to see how Netflix handles its popular shows. As far as I know they haven't had a popular one end on its own accords, only unsuccessful ones have ceased producing new episodes. Will they allow their flagship shows to end while still topical and well made? Like some cable stations. Or will they push the creative team to churn out dreck past its expiration date. Like the networks.
  17. Start considering Granite (or Wade or Palka) if there is an OF injury on the 25 man. If this team ever adds another offensive player, I'd hope it's Vargas.
  18. Things didn't appear to break the Twins way in that one. Most of the guys we've talked about with picks 35 and 37 are gone.
  19. Or that he presently has a .143 BABIP and there is nearly a 3 run gap between his ERA and xFIP.
  20. I'm pretty bullish on 6'0" RH starting pitchers presently. But I understand the concern. His injury history is the only thing that gives me pause with him.
  21. Yeah, I don't get it, being portly doesn't appear to preclude many guys from being a good pitcher, I don't know why. It doesn't even preclude them from going deep into games which I would think would be beyond their stamina. Sabathia, Bartolo Colon, David Wells, Lance Lynn, Carlos Zambrano, Livan Hernandez. I mean these are just top-of-my-head names and they could all go deep into games. My belief system is firmly grounded in science, but if there was one thing that might sway me to the supernatural, it's chubby pitchers.
  22. I'd think it's quite the opposite. Mejia doesn't have promising nasty stuff that may never translate, what he does have is four pitches and good command. That seems to imply he's more pitcher than promise. He looks to have the makings of an unsexy but quite stable lefty rotation staple for the foreseeable future.
  23. HS or otherwise, I don't think you take a guy at 1:1 who you expect will take 5 years. I don't know how the Twins or any front office feels about any of these guys, but at 1:1, I'd be disappointed if people didn't view whomever it is as a guy who moves multiple levels a season.
  24. If people are skeptical about putting Hughes in the pen because they don't want Gibson in the rotation, how about if the Twins do take Nick's suggestion of calling up Romero for the pen, let him get his feet wet as a long man for a month or so and if he doesn't completely fall apart see if they can ease him into the rotation, hopefully allowing for both Hughes and Gibson to move to the pen by the AS break?
  25. The Rangers are/were going to DFA Sam Dyson but it sounds like multiple teams are interested in trading for him: https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/870467962007957505 A sinkerballing, journeyman reliever who surprisingly got handed a closer gig last year despite not having strikeout material or any real experience in that role. I think I've heard that one before.
