  1. Ramos is an exciting prospect, however they have Beck falling to 26. If he fell that far I'd like to think the Twins could try to leverage their bonus pool to help him intentionally fall a few more spots to them.
  2. Isn't a pitcher who drops more likely to bust than a pitcher who goes 1-1?
  3. It's beautiful outside. How are you guys typing with lawnmowers, wheelbarrows and hedge trimmers in your hands? I'm just taking (another) beer break.
  4. That's awful. These are human beings, not some kind of disposable commodity that can be modified for our max enjoyment.
  5. This is fantastic, and I hope there are some statistical payoffs due to the better fitness and added energy. If not, curtailing poor eating habits of young men is a fine result on it's own. But I am a bit puzzled. These guys get a per diem, is that per diem going towards the road catered meals? As in they give the players an extra $25 per day on the road in their paycheck but then take it back because they are providing the food? Or is the catered food gratis and they still get a per diem to use at their discretion?
  6. That was a good one. I love watching the Twins win, but boy, it would have been nice to have Santana perform like this at a time when it would have made sense to sell him. He can't keep this up and it's going to sting if he starts to even out.
  7. MLBTR?! Really?! Didn't anyone tell Trevor about the fantastic audience he would have had here at Twins Daily had he decided to blog here? Oh what could have been!
  8. So my soon-to-be 7-year-old saw a preview for a new Transformers movie and got excited. As an 80's kid I loved Transformers, and I'm thrilled my son is starting to transition to Marvel Movies and Star Wars so I can see something other than cartoons in the theater. But ugh, Michael Bay.....So torn about this development.
  9. John Heyman is also saying the Twins are likely to pass on Greene: https://www.fanragsports.com/mlb/twins/heyman-twins-expected-pass-hunter-greene/ Probably legit, Wright seems like the college arm most GMs would be more comfortable with. Although leaking that you're leaning away from the HS kid is also probably the kind of thing you do when you want to convince him to agree for less than his slot amount.
  10. I got kids, and they'll have kids. How does that matter? One culture trying to live with another culture while both try to keep their ideals has been going on for millennia. We've had the blue print for how to handle this forever but always disregard it because the infringed upon culture wants to take a pound of flesh from the entire ethnic group even when violence was perpetrated by a few. The violence isn't going to stop because of archaic ideas of quashing and suppressing the ideas of a group of people, history shows us that always emboldens them. On the other hand, people don't tend to enact violence on other people they know and trust. Want to prevent this stuff and accelerate the peace? We can just look at the first Red Scare and WWI for answers. - Stop meddling in foreign affairs. 2017: Fail. WWI: Fail - Contain the ethnic fear mongering to the minimal lunatic fringe. 2017: Fail. WWI: Fail - Promote diverse urban environments and premier education because the best way people learn tolerance AND assimilation is to learn about and interact with the people they previously didn't know and feared. 2017: Fail. WWI: Hey, way to go WWI, it worked! So that stuff isn't going to happen now, so I guess we're just going to have to wait it out and just live with the extra security demands and law and order afforded to us by the constitution in the meantime. Those doing bad things will be punished and jailed if they are not already dead, which is how it is supposed to work. Unless we thought Minority Report was a good idea that is.
  11. Perhaps it's not fear causing them to refrain from acting, but a realization that prohibiting Islamic views is a terrible way to fight the problem. From the start, the Sedition Act of 1918 was viewed as unjust and just about everyone convicted of such offenses were soon commuted. It was an awful folly and repealed 2 years later And we realized it was ridiculous a century ago. Even so, do we know that the people doing the actual bombings take part in this public "extreme speech" which is prohibited? There is basically no way to actually identify an "extremist" until after he or she has done something terrible. People and governments know this, so it's just easier for people to just assume all Muslims are the problem. Not everyone, but if you're the group being marginalized it really wouldn't feel much different if 100% of the population is treating you poorly or if was only 20%. The disparate treatment they receive due to this prejudice is not the only, but surely one large reason this stuff keeps happening. This isn't new, the Espionage and Sedition Acts 100 years ago occurred because of extreme acts by Bolsheviks, Anarchists and Galleanists. These terrible acts will pass, but it will take a generation or so for the children and grand children of the extremists to prefer the benefits of our culture to the one their parents preach. The assimilation would probably happen sooner if half of our population didn't point fingers and label all of them as terrorists.
  12. So how does one go about protecting the rights of the non-Muslim extremists, or the Muslim extremists who have not committed any offenses? Seems to me the problem usually stems from people or a government deciding it's easier to just assume all Muslims are extremists and all extremists have committed crimes. It further seems to me that by generalizing an already marginalized group, we're then actually encouraging otherwise law-abiding people to act out and become what we assumed they were all along.
  13. Moderator Note Again, stop with the debate over a poster's intent and stay on topic. Any further responses of the sort will receive a warning point.
  14. Just the word "safer" as it is clearly an indicator of comparison where as "safe" is a generally accepted adjective of clear definition. I know it sounds like symantics but it isn't, in this case it is regularly being used to sway opinion. And to be clear, plenty of people here are using "safer". And honestly, I'm 50/50 on Greene and Wright right now. I was heavily in Greene's camp a few weeks ago.
  15. The Sun?
  16. Which still seems misleading to me. When comparing poisons we don't say that cyanide is safe simply because it's possibly less lethal than anthrax. When these pundits use the word 'safe' I'm guessing there are way too many readers jumping to the conclusion that the guy is a near lock to be an average if not quality major leaguer when the likelihood is far from that.
  17. I agree, but the lack of risk communication is universal among all types of prospects. If they were being rational, they wouldn't label anyone as 'safe'. Every player is 'un-safe' and unlikely to be even an average MLB player. So if no one is 'safe' and everyone is a 'risk' we're really just talking about degrees of those terms.
  18. 3.5-4.0 is only like a top 40-50 offensive player in the game. Plus WAR gets adjusted backward for 1st basemen. I think I'd shoot for someone with more potential. Plus he'd be a lefty hitting at TF, any power grade is going to have to be reduced significantly. And we're talking about a position that can be filled by just about any player. It's become a position that even if it isn't filled internally can be filled with fairly affordable free agents.
  19. Considering McKay's NCAA career BB/9 is 3.19 I'd guess he's no Maddux. Wright is currently and has for his career walked fewer batters. Not that walks are the only factor when it comes to control.
  20. I'd think the odds that either of them become an ace are much less. People like to throw around the "No righthanded HS pitcher has gone 1-1", but that's a bit misleading because only three HS arms of any sort have gone 1-1. Since the draft started 17 pitchers have gone 1-1, I'd say only three were aces which generously includes Garrit Cole and Stephen Strausburg who under most circumstances would probably be considered TBD and David Price who may have finished being useful right when his rookie contract was up. If finding an "Ace" is the goal, you probably really do have to go with the guy with most upside. If it's more important to try to get a guy who won't bust, clearly the college guys make sense, but it's still a long shot. Only 5 pitchers taken 1-1 have managed even a career of 25 WAR. Cole and Strausburg likely some day will make it 7, but tossing out those two plus Aiken and Appel, there have only been 5 of 13 pitchers who have even been barely not disappointing, or 38%. If getting even a "safe" guy is that low of a percentage, I think I'd rather have the guy with the most ceiling. And I'm not saying that's Greene; it might be Wright. Probably not McKay though.
  21. Roger Moore is gone. The first Bond to pass which is pretty good run considering how old several of them are.
  22. Yeah , that's why I never wanted him in the rotation. But he has already shown himself capable of throwing a baseball even if not to particularly great effect. I'm just wondering if there is different news regarding his shoulder other than it being stiff, because that doesn't sound career threatening. If not serious he'll almost certainly be pitching two more years somewhere in some capacity because of his contract, so I'm just curious why so many are talking like this is the end of the road.
  23. I'll wait a bit longer than the middle of May to decide if ego is the reason why Haley is still on the roster. I'm sure the new guys would prefer not to be wrong about their Rule V choice and perhaps that is why he has been kept instead of Terry Ryan's guys who have already been DFA'd. Or it could have been because they knew there was always the possibility that Tonkin and Santana may pass through waivers and be retained, where as there is next to no possibility of retaining Haley if they took action on him.
  24. Are these doom and gloom sentiments regarding Hughes a little premature? Shoulder injuries can be serious, but not all of them. I never wanted Hughes in the rotation to begin with, but this thread reads like an obituary. Is there anything else I'm missing besides the fact that his shoulder is stiff? I hope he's fine, and I also hope he heads to the pen or somewhere other than Minnesota's rotation, but this all sounds so morbid.
  25. Yeah, it's a really well preserved 1920's style Art Deco theater with classic curtains, lighting and balcony. In lieu of twenty minutes of adds prior to the movie there's an organist playing instead. I love going there, I feel sophisticated. I usually look the part too wearing my cargo shorts and a t-shirt, just like the socialites of yore did.
