  1. Footspeed doesn't mean a ton with this team. And I know everyone is on board with better defensive players right now, but it always seems more important in theory than in practice. A good defensive player who's only putting up an OPS of .700 starts hearing the grumblings of discontent by the end of May when there's another option sitting in AAA who looks capable of topping .800.
  2. Royce Lewis at least hit a dozen HR the year everyone was down on him. Martin only managed to get 2 over the fence this year. And he only hit 5 last year. Sorry, I just can't get excited about a guy who's ceiling is Luis Arraez, as most guys don't hit their ceilings. He might end up being a usable player, but he'll almost certainly be someone the team is always looking to upgrade from.
  3. Assuming the anti-shift rules favor Kepler, he's still just a slap hitter these days. That's not good enough for a corner bat. Anyone who had Nick Gordon outslugging Kepler by 100 freakin' points this year wins the prize. I'd trade him if possible and play the young guys. I'd reconsider if he finally shows he can grow a decent beard.
  4. My biggest problem with the suggestions of replacing the front office is the undertone from many of the posts that they don't like the 'new school' approach to baseball. That's too bad, it has to stay. The team absolutely has zero chance if they turn into the Colorado Rockies and pretend decisions should be made by some manager or GM's "gut". That is not a viable option in today's game. Replacing the front office can certainly be on the table, but it would have to be with similarly minded people, who may just have new ideas to evaluate and problem solve. Before making any such decision though, someone NOT in the inner circle, say Dave St. Peter, needs to hire someone to do an independent study to at least try to determine if the rash of injuries are due to predictable or unpredictable causations.
  5. I'd have to think at worst, Festa and Lee have the same ETA year. Hopefully both start in Wichita next year, but I'd think Festa is more likely to do so.
  6. I have little interest in the low ceiling Dobnak and Smeltzer. But I could care less about their ages. What's it matter? If a pitcher comes up at the age of 24-25, the Twins will control them through their useful years anyway. Winder and Varland still look to have the potential to be very good starters. Sands looks to be a promising bullpen arm and I'm looking forward to seeing if an offseason of relief conditioning does to his velocity what it did to Jax's. Balazovic is still a wild card, though obviously the sheen is off the rose.
  7. Good to see Wallner. Strikeout rate is under 30% now too, that's better than what he was doing at Wichita. Also good to see Lee continue to jack some home runs. I thought the questions about his power were a bit overblown.
  8. Well looking at what he's done against the Yankees, the opponent the Twins face after Chicago, he has no business being on the 28-man roster.
  9. Well in three innings he does have a sparking 0.00 career ERA against the White Sox. The Yankees on the other hand, 15.88 career ERA. So…..not hoping for more of that. The Red Sox seemed have given a marginal reliever a pretty long leash considering what he’s done against their sworn enemy.
  10. I hope so, because I'm not much of a LOOGY fan, particularly with the new pitching rules. If this is a long term experiment, I'd much rather see Evan Sisk, or Louie Varland if we aren't particular about which hand is used. Winder is gearing up too, so I suppose Davis is going to have a hard time sticking around.
  11. I didn't read the source material so I went in really dark, but I figured it would be some epic, overarching dramatic event. But after the first couple of episodes, when most of the characters from those episodes were gone, it kind of seemed episodic, like a case-study of the week kind of thing. I wasn't expecting that.
  12. Why won't Mahle help the Twins this year? He's likely pitching this weekend. I've thought all year long there was nothing this team could do to do more than compete for the lowly Central title. I'm only taking issue with people who somehow want to rip the front office for the deadline moves, which, even if you're not a fan of the front office, have to admit they did really well. Pretty much everyone around the league agreed that after the Padres, the Twins did the best for themselves at the deadline. Again, it's not a crime to dislike someone while also acknowledging they did something right. We seem to have a bit of an issue with that around here. People are still allowed to admit they did well at the deadline, but they still want them fired.
  13. They got one of the best (and my opinion since June has been THE best) starting pitcher available and arguably the two best relievers available. Your bar to even give an ounce of credit must be pretty high.
  14. Yeah, he backed it up with all those Super Bowls championships too. Sorry, I know you can't stand to hear it but defense <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< offense. Sure, you need a balance, but a team full of Billy Hamiltons win you what, 30 games a season?
  15. 100% disagree. The Twins started falling in the standings when the bats went cold. Offense is, and should be the HIGH priority. This move is fine. It just shouldn't be treated as a big deal just because it's a known name. Consider this Jarvis Brown, say 'Sure, why not?', and move along.
  16. Do I think they can save the season? Probably not. Would they make watching baseball more enjoyable that Cave, Bundy, Archer and Pagan? Indubitably.
  17. Can he be better than 2022 Berrios? Pretty low bar. Whether his decline was due to a change of scenery or if his stuff was just bound to tail off, looks like the Twins sold him at the right time. Imagine the consternation around here had he been carrying a 5.00+ ERA all summer. The fans would be yelling to pull him from the rotation, though he likely would stay there, and we'd all be watching the likelihood of a QO compensation fade away.
  18. Man, if Lee keeps developing that power, that would just be fantastic. I liked him as a pick, but I didn't care for the projections of 10-15 HR. So is Jaylen Nowlin one of those 'crafty' lefties who gets lower minor leaguers out because they have little experience against guys like him? Or does he actually have good movement and velocity on his pitches?
  19. He's already thrown 20 IP more than he did last year and the Saints play through the end of September, I'm guessing we could see piggybacking with he and Henriquez the rest of the way to keep them both fresh. Perhaps MLB bullpen options too.
  20. What makes you think the Twins haven't got that with Ryan? It's also a super convenient complaint because god forbid two young pitchers are injured. That never happens to any team but the failure Twins. This is getting really grating. I know everyone is upset, but the pitchers, particularly the young pitchers haven't been the ones losing the games, it's been the offense. The first and second year pitchers are almost exclusively this season's only success stories. Complaining about EVERY aspect of the team just to make sure everyone knows you don't like what the team is doing is a poor argument. It's also OK to shift the complaints when one area improves and another starts failing.
  21. So we were expecting everyone to pop up and be Atlanta circa ‘95? You’re being unreasonable with the expectations of inexperienced pitchers.
  22. Ryan, Duran, Winder, Jax, Ober, Sands? This sounds like my kids yelling about there not being any cookies in the house after they just got done finishing off a carton of Oreos.
  23. I’m not concerned. Prospects are replaceable. But mostly, they’re just a poor predictor anyway. Miranda and Winder were nobodies in the eyes of national rankings until last year. Arraez, Jax, Gordon, Celestino, Ober and Sands were always nobodies. If “prospects” will get you cheap MLB talented players, keep trading them and rely on the nobodies.
  24. While there’s certainly utility in Sands being a long man this year, that’s not what I hope for long term, nor is him going back to the rotation. The Twins haven’t done much right with the pen this year, but the one thing they’ve crushed, is turning fringy starters into hard throwing late inning relievers. I’d keep doing that as long as it pays off.
