  1. Jeez. Polanco batting cleanup? At least Kepler has only led off once this season, I believe. Of course, with this "new" baseball, still trying to figure out the roles of the pitching staff. Looks like bullpen arms will be asked to go a minimum of two innings in msot cases since starters can't do five innings, and even the 100 pitch count is not being pushed (okay, short spring training et al, but.....) When Ober returns, will we be without WInder in the rotation? Can we run with an opener, at least, for Archer, so maybe he can start facing the bottom of the order and do that three times? I wait for Larnach to return and see what happens in the outfield. The good news is that if Buxton needs to DH, we have Celestino in centerfield. The bad news is where to play Lewis and Arraez. I wish we could send Miranda down to St. Paul for a few weeks just to work things out there, play first base there. Can we designate for assignment Garlick and bring up Curtis Terry, by chance, just for the first base heck of it. (And heaven forbid, what happens IF and WHEN Sano returns). I will always shake my head at Rocco's batting order. But right now sit patiently until we get Larnach and Correa back. Happ-maker! Ha! I'm hoping we aren't seeing the Bund-Arch as a rerun of last season! When the rookies (Smeltzer, WInder) can pitch longer and better than the vets...ugh!

    A great problem

Correa would have to be hitting huge for another team to even think about his deal...plus that he COULD walk or stay. At any point, if he walks, you can just try and get him yourself the next season. But, yes, if the Twins are contending, you don't want to make other teams better!
  3. YOU CAN MAYBE STRETCH A LITTLE BIT MORE. BUT IF YOU HAVE TO STRETCH, THE PROBLEM IS ON THE THROW.
  4. Soon the team should have 20,000+ fans on a regular basis at Target Field. More if they run some great deals. Can Royce Lewis play first base? Yes, Miranda should work out kinks in St. Paul, and would probably be one of the casualities if and when Larnach and Correa come back. Does Lewis need to play shortstop evryday if he is the future guy? Better yet, Correa NEEDS to play shortstop everyday if he expects to get some offers in the off-season, or he ahs to allow himself to be traded if and when the time comes. I hate the thought of Lewis in one of the corner outfield spots. Suddenly, we have an embarrassment of riches if Larnach and Celestino continue to dominate so Kepler becomes the spare (can Max play first base?). Of course, the Twins have no TRUE DH!
  5. It's a big jump to the majors, not to mention playing first. You have to learn and get used to the different ways people throw you the ball. Be nice if he could rotate at third/DH with Gio, let's say. Get his swing back.
  6. So, we can continue to beat up on the Front Office for the Yankees and Padres trades, not to mention the signing of Bundy and Archer. Or we can sit back and enjoy that the Twins actually have a winning record with 5-6 guys on the 60-day IL and a host of other nursing injuries. Not to mention that Winder, Lewis, Miranda, Duran and Sands have all had debvuts with the team...did I say they have a winning record going into Mid-May!?! Batting averages are down across baseball for some unexplianed reason beyond that guys seem to be standing exactly where balls are hit in the field. Not to mention that starters don't last and fresh arms can be had daily by any team as long as the rosters are set like they are (back to 13 pitchers come June 1 - WHO IS GONE FROM THE TWINS PEN?).
  7. Why push Cano for a third inning? Well, with sttarters seldom going more than five, I guess ALL relief pitchers have to be able to now pitch at least two innings, if not more. Maybe the Twins NEED to use the opener logic for some of their pitchers! Have guys like Archer come in and face the bottom of the order to start their day.
  8. I wanted to say that the strikes vs. balls ration seemed so different in these games. But it was about even in the double-day game, and Verlander gave a lesson in pitching in the first game by going for contact vs. working the corners. The walks hurt with Ryan & Co. Probably didn't help Winder either. Pitchers throw stikes. Set their pace. Try to control the game. The minute first-class hitters see "the nibble" they can wait it out. First pitch strikes put the pitchers in front. If you can get a secon pitch strike, then you can start the nuibbling. The six pitch inning by Verlander is one ALL pitchers should study. That being said, were the Twins hitters just overmatched? Again, getting a runner on base SHOULD also change the pitcher work ethic. It should make them worry (as every Twins pitcher seemed to when a Astros was on base) that the runner was going to advance. So you throw strikes, which the Astros seemed prepared to attack, too...especially in that over-sealous inning for Cano/Stashak. The Dodgers and the Astros have showed the weaknesses of the Twins. Hey, even the Orioles and A's, in their own way (as well as The Royals) did hold their own. Don't start buying a season ticket package to get preferential treatment for the post season yet.
  9. Out of the three young outfielders, he needs to spend the most time back with the Saints getting regular work at first base. Or maybe Miranda needs to go back. If the Twins are to contend, they can't have too many guys working thru injuries or learning on the job.
  10. He is filling a role. A guy you can count on when runners are on base, which is a plus.
  11. You can have a home run hitter. But he does less good if he doesn't hit them with me on base. If he hits 50+ homers, you can praise him for the ones that only make him run around the bases. But in the scheme of things, if looking for someone to hot 20-25 homers a season and playing one of the corners on the diamond, a place in the outfield, or desiognated hitter...you can find them any and every season for what you would have to pay Sano in 2023. Are we afraid that he will go elsewhere and shine? If he does, it will happen because of coaching, a better batting order (perhaps), and Sano wanting to have a much longer career. But with his current trajectory, it looks like he will have to settle for a lower salary come 2023, work his butt off to succeed, and might end up at a team that has played him worse than the Twins in his career...played him where, I don't know. Will a contender grab him (or maybe the Twins can trade him to the National League when he comes off the IL) or will he end up in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh or Kansas City. Maybe Oakland. Possibly Colorado would like to see if he would be a monster mash. What I am (sadly) most happy about is that the Twins can now see how they can work without Sano. Without worrying about keeping him in a position because he needs to play on the field than wander the dugout. How they only have to cringe at the bad swings of Sanchez in a game instead of the swings of two batters. They can see how he works to stay in shape for his return. How he plays during a 10-game stint (at least) in the minors. They will be able to maybe dangle him as tradebait. Maybe he'll end up like Oswaldo Arcia, going to foreign ball and ending his career in the lowly indy leagues looking for that return to the majors. But I will tell you all this...I am tired of watching him swing at the low outside-the-strike zone pitches. Maybe he goes a week holding back. But he is always doomed to return what he thinks is best in his batters box.
  12. Sad to see Ryan Mason cut loose by the Twins. Not sure if he would've been a Rule 5 grab, but had hoped that he would get at least a cup of coffee with the team, after all the work he has put in since being drafted.
  13. He will forever be a utility player in the Twins system and will stay around until arbitration when he may become "too expensive" for his role, compared to othre alternatives. Not sure if he will ever get the chance like a Hocking, Adrianza or Punto to be the regular when someone goes down with an injury. The sad fact that the Twins NEED to play him in the outfield show how shaky the organization currently is in outfield depth, although they shouldn't be. But, in the end, would you play Gordon in any position permanently? That is the true evaluation of his worth to the team. At least with Arraez you would happily give him second, third for a season or more, and would be comfortable pluggintg him at first or the outfield if you feel the dire need for his bat.
  14. Sad to see that the Twins and Saints sent RYAN MASON packing. Had hopes for Ryan, even an addition to the 40-man in the off-seasoin (he would've been Rule 5 eligible). Not sure what went wrong in his five relief appearances in St. Paul. Maybe he still isn't conquering the BB hurtle. Or just the numbers game. But always sad when homegrown talent gets walking papers while the roster is full of AAAA guys who sometimes seem to have a longer leash, for some odd reason. Good luck, Ryan. Hope you egt picked up by another major league organization this spring. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=mason-000rya
  15. St. Paul Saints released Ryan Mason. Thought the guy had potential. https://www.milb.com/player/ryan-mason-663390 The Saints added Roy Morales who had been on the Development Roster at Wichita. He can hit, he can catch, he is a guy to watch! Dylan Thomas, who has basically been injured all last year and started this year on the IL, was released. https://www.milb.com/player/dylan-thomas-682250
  16. Ernie Yake promoted to Saints from Ft. Myers. Minor League free agent Cole Sturgeon promoted from Wichita to Sains, as Jake Cave goes on inactive list. Casey Legumina and Osiris German moved from Cedar Rapids to Wichita. Orlando Rodriguez joins the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Brandon Lawson released.
  17. Didn't someone say you can't hit home runs in Camden anymore? Well, you can sure ground into double plays. And three baserunners getting thrown out at an advancing base doesn't win you games.
  18. Ernie Yake jumps again (he did this last year, too) from the low minors to the Saints. Shades of Jimmy Kerrigan in the past.
  19. It seems St. Paul is carrying an abundance of players (over 30 "ACTIVE" at the moment) and just added Cole Sturgeon and Ernie Yake to the mix. Also, players replacing COVID players don't necessarily have to be on he 40-man roster, right? Why use an option if you really don't have to use an option? That would speak well for guys like Curtis Terry or Devon Smeltzer or any number of AAA arms (Chi Chi time!). Correa having swollen fingers may create the opportunity we all want to see for Lewis, although I would hate to be without Correa for 10-15 days. The great news is that Winder looks to get another start. Gray gets a rehab in St. Paul. And Balazovic is close to returning to St. Paul.
  20. No worries. The issue always with college players (both pitchers and hitters) is the metal bats. Gotta get used to them, how the ball comes off them, etc. Plus, once you start going up-up-up in the minors, the competition rises, too. You may be hot stuf in your high school or collegiate league, but suddenly you are playing against, for the msot part, people of equal quality. Which is why you have minor leagues, folks.
  21. Even Kirilloff was a first baseman in training. If I hated anything about the Mitch Garver trade, it was that I thought Garver could be a good fill-in when needed at firstr base, and always give you the luxury of a DH bat who can also catch in a pinch. Can Miranda play first base? It does take a skill set. A lot of workj with infielders. You have to hope they throw the ball straight for those double plays. How far can you stretch. Can you grab the ball on a short hop. All while keeping a foot on the bag. That is always the rub...foot placement seems to be job one, because if you can't make that out...well....... Terry was signed for depth. He could be a last chance pick, if push comes to shove. But, in hindsight, if Arraez can play the bag...his bat is valuable. Would Gio be better at first, with Miranda and Arraez playing third mroe often than not? Well, depends on Kirilloff. Right now it looks like Larnach is doing evreything possible to be in the outfield. No need to give up on Kepler, although he could be tradable. Is Celestino going to develop in the majors or get a chance to play everyday in the minors shortly. So looks like Kirilloff will HAVE to be a first baseman. But until we know the "state of the wrist" the Twins have to think ahrd about the position in 2023. Is Gio someone to groom in that direction more than Arraez, for example. Again, it takes a certain skillset to be great at first base on the field. But so many first baseman are just...adequate...performing the routine plays with enough comfortable ease that you can blame mistakes on other parts of the field.
  22. The problem still is SHORT STARTS. The rotation arms have to get to six innings. Winder did it (Yes). Now can we get that from the vets? The Twins also DON'T HAVE A REAL CLOSER. Would you trust Duran yet? I would sure give him the chance. Otherwise, it is musical chairs. Duffey, Thielbar, Pagan, Coulombe. Are we happy that Stashak is back? Is JAX the real thing (hey, maybe he is the closer). But now we have 7 starters, if you count Sands. When Ober comes back..... Minaya got roughed up. Cano and Smeltzer are pitchiung real well. Moran is coming back well. Do you trust guys like Petricka, Mason, Megill, Bashlor, Sanchez, Pinto more than we really have?
  23. Chris Herrmann is out there, too. So was Tomas Telis.
  24. Kepler and Gordon can backup centerfield. If Kirilloff hits, he takes oevr first with Sano regulated to part-time field duties and action at DH. If Larnach can play everyday, keep him. But the Twins also see the need to egt Arraez and Gordon in the lineup, and best spots for those two are 1B and LF, it seems. Garlick can go back to St. Paul. But if Celestino also goes, too many outfielders there. But you would open up a roster spot. More curious about what pitcher departs when Gary comes back. Winder and Jax are great for multi-inning pitchers, moreso than Stashak. I wish we could get Smeltzer up here to be the long lefty out of the pen. And want to see more from Coulombe to understand if he is a true keeper. People coming back from injuries changes any of our thoughts drastically.
