3 Ways Joe Smith Is Better Than Advertised
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He is filling a role. A guy you can count on when runners are on base, which is a plus. -
Miguel Sano: Boom, Bust, or Both?
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You can have a home run hitter. But he does less good if he doesn't hit them with me on base. If he hits 50+ homers, you can praise him for the ones that only make him run around the bases. But in the scheme of things, if looking for someone to hot 20-25 homers a season and playing one of the corners on the diamond, a place in the outfield, or desiognated hitter...you can find them any and every season for what you would have to pay Sano in 2023. Are we afraid that he will go elsewhere and shine? If he does, it will happen because of coaching, a better batting order (perhaps), and Sano wanting to have a much longer career. But with his current trajectory, it looks like he will have to settle for a lower salary come 2023, work his butt off to succeed, and might end up at a team that has played him worse than the Twins in his career...played him where, I don't know. Will a contender grab him (or maybe the Twins can trade him to the National League when he comes off the IL) or will he end up in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh or Kansas City. Maybe Oakland. Possibly Colorado would like to see if he would be a monster mash. What I am (sadly) most happy about is that the Twins can now see how they can work without Sano. Without worrying about keeping him in a position because he needs to play on the field than wander the dugout. How they only have to cringe at the bad swings of Sanchez in a game instead of the swings of two batters. They can see how he works to stay in shape for his return. How he plays during a 10-game stint (at least) in the minors. They will be able to maybe dangle him as tradebait. Maybe he'll end up like Oswaldo Arcia, going to foreign ball and ending his career in the lowly indy leagues looking for that return to the majors. But I will tell you all this...I am tired of watching him swing at the low outside-the-strike zone pitches. Maybe he goes a week holding back. But he is always doomed to return what he thinks is best in his batters box.- 34 replies

Sad to see Ryan Mason cut loose by the Twins. Not sure if he would've been a Rule 5 grab, but had hoped that he would get at least a cup of coffee with the team, after all the work he has put in since being drafted.

Has Nick Gordon Proven His Worth to the Twins?
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He will forever be a utility player in the Twins system and will stay around until arbitration when he may become "too expensive" for his role, compared to othre alternatives. Not sure if he will ever get the chance like a Hocking, Adrianza or Punto to be the regular when someone goes down with an injury. The sad fact that the Twins NEED to play him in the outfield show how shaky the organization currently is in outfield depth, although they shouldn't be. But, in the end, would you play Gordon in any position permanently? That is the true evaluation of his worth to the team. At least with Arraez you would happily give him second, third for a season or more, and would be comfortable pluggintg him at first or the outfield if you feel the dire need for his bat. -
Sad to see that the Twins and Saints sent RYAN MASON packing. Had hopes for Ryan, even an addition to the 40-man in the off-seasoin (he would've been Rule 5 eligible). Not sure what went wrong in his five relief appearances in St. Paul. Maybe he still isn't conquering the BB hurtle. Or just the numbers game. But always sad when homegrown talent gets walking papers while the roster is full of AAAA guys who sometimes seem to have a longer leash, for some odd reason. Good luck, Ryan. Hope you egt picked up by another major league organization this spring. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=mason-000rya

Twins 2022 Minor League Transactions
Rosterman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
St. Paul Saints released Ryan Mason. Thought the guy had potential. https://www.milb.com/player/ryan-mason-663390 The Saints added Roy Morales who had been on the Development Roster at Wichita. He can hit, he can catch, he is a guy to watch! Dylan Thomas, who has basically been injured all last year and started this year on the IL, was released. https://www.milb.com/player/dylan-thomas-682250 -

Orioles 5, Twins 3: Five Solo Shots Shatter Twins
Rosterman replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Didn't someone say you can't hit home runs in Camden anymore? Well, you can sure ground into double plays. And three baserunners getting thrown out at an advancing base doesn't win you games.- 31 replies

Ernie Yake jumps again (he did this last year, too) from the low minors to the Saints. Shades of Jimmy Kerrigan in the past.

It seems St. Paul is carrying an abundance of players (over 30 "ACTIVE" at the moment) and just added Cole Sturgeon and Ernie Yake to the mix. Also, players replacing COVID players don't necessarily have to be on he 40-man roster, right? Why use an option if you really don't have to use an option? That would speak well for guys like Curtis Terry or Devon Smeltzer or any number of AAA arms (Chi Chi time!). Correa having swollen fingers may create the opportunity we all want to see for Lewis, although I would hate to be without Correa for 10-15 days. The great news is that Winder looks to get another start. Gray gets a rehab in St. Paul. And Balazovic is close to returning to St. Paul.

Is It Time to Start Worrying About Austin Martin?
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
No worries. The issue always with college players (both pitchers and hitters) is the metal bats. Gotta get used to them, how the ball comes off them, etc. Plus, once you start going up-up-up in the minors, the competition rises, too. You may be hot stuf in your high school or collegiate league, but suddenly you are playing against, for the msot part, people of equal quality. Which is why you have minor leagues, folks. -
Reevaluating Minnesota’s First Base Depth
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Even Kirilloff was a first baseman in training. If I hated anything about the Mitch Garver trade, it was that I thought Garver could be a good fill-in when needed at firstr base, and always give you the luxury of a DH bat who can also catch in a pinch. Can Miranda play first base? It does take a skill set. A lot of workj with infielders. You have to hope they throw the ball straight for those double plays. How far can you stretch. Can you grab the ball on a short hop. All while keeping a foot on the bag. That is always the rub...foot placement seems to be job one, because if you can't make that out...well....... Terry was signed for depth. He could be a last chance pick, if push comes to shove. But, in hindsight, if Arraez can play the bag...his bat is valuable. Would Gio be better at first, with Miranda and Arraez playing third mroe often than not? Well, depends on Kirilloff. Right now it looks like Larnach is doing evreything possible to be in the outfield. No need to give up on Kepler, although he could be tradable. Is Celestino going to develop in the majors or get a chance to play everyday in the minors shortly. So looks like Kirilloff will HAVE to be a first baseman. But until we know the "state of the wrist" the Twins have to think ahrd about the position in 2023. Is Gio someone to groom in that direction more than Arraez, for example. Again, it takes a certain skillset to be great at first base on the field. But so many first baseman are just...adequate...performing the routine plays with enough comfortable ease that you can blame mistakes on other parts of the field.- 48 replies

Twins' Bullpen: Don't trust (most) Anyone Over 30
Rosterman commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
The problem still is SHORT STARTS. The rotation arms have to get to six innings. Winder did it (Yes). Now can we get that from the vets? The Twins also DON'T HAVE A REAL CLOSER. Would you trust Duran yet? I would sure give him the chance. Otherwise, it is musical chairs. Duffey, Thielbar, Pagan, Coulombe. Are we happy that Stashak is back? Is JAX the real thing (hey, maybe he is the closer). But now we have 7 starters, if you count Sands. When Ober comes back..... Minaya got roughed up. Cano and Smeltzer are pitchiung real well. Moran is coming back well. Do you trust guys like Petricka, Mason, Megill, Bashlor, Sanchez, Pinto more than we really have? -

Kepler and Gordon can backup centerfield. If Kirilloff hits, he takes oevr first with Sano regulated to part-time field duties and action at DH. If Larnach can play everyday, keep him. But the Twins also see the need to egt Arraez and Gordon in the lineup, and best spots for those two are 1B and LF, it seems. Garlick can go back to St. Paul. But if Celestino also goes, too many outfielders there. But you would open up a roster spot. More curious about what pitcher departs when Gary comes back. Winder and Jax are great for multi-inning pitchers, moreso than Stashak. I wish we could get Smeltzer up here to be the long lefty out of the pen. And want to see more from Coulombe to understand if he is a true keeper. People coming back from injuries changes any of our thoughts drastically.

Slap the Head! Didn't they ALL just have a day off? When the bats on the bench are multiple times better (at least four of them) than six of the guys in the line-up? Bench guys are to spell every so often, or in the late innings, or used in situationals. But a highly paid, first-tier player sitting out a day should still be available if necessary in a situational event. I used to hate the days when Twins played an afternoon game and the "B" (bench squad) would all get to play - shades of Denny Hocking getting regular play. Hey, they come to the field at what, 2-3 in the afternoon. They suit up. They take batting pratice, maybe chase some flies while they run about the green grass of spring.

Scouring the Twins System for Relief Help
Rosterman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And we forget the dark horse candidates. Bryan Sammons is equally as good as Valimont, and is a lefty to boot. He got pushed off the Saints roster in the numbers game, but could be advanced if Smeltzer or Moran comes to Target Field. Jordan Gore was showing real promise at Wichita last season and is getting a rude awakening at St. Paul. Will be interesting to see how he adjusts. Ryan Mason is one of those guys that will be overlooked and will walk and see some action with another team, unless the Twins open their eyes that he can pitch as well as probably any number of the AAAA recruits signed this spring. And Ian Hamilton is playing his third season as a Saint. Many called for his call-up last season. Injured right now, but a possibility. What I like is that the Twins do have significant options if the roster sports are available. Can they flip a pending free agent like Duffey at the trade dealine? Move Joe Smith? Will they think ahead of giving innings to guys come September, instead of what they diud last season, letting Moran and others wallow in the minors while giving cred to Barraclough, Vincent, Gibaut and saves to Colome?- 24 replies

Correa is in the driving seat for the next three years if he wants to stay in Minnesota. Aside from releasing him, or trading him (with his consent). Of course, for the Twins it all depends on the progression of Royce Lewis as the next shortstop. And even at this point in time, if Royce has a full season at AAA St. Paul and does well, he could still start 2023 at St. Paul (shades of Miranda) if Correa stays in the fold. Gotta say, the Dodger fans (here en masse) were brutal towards Correa in that series. Far from Minnesota nice!

Twins Banged Up Backstops
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Godoy can be optioned out, as long as you keep him on the 40-man. The Twins probability of adding players to the 40-man after the May 1 senddowns is slim to none at this point. Not that it can't change come mid-month or later. Makes you kinda want Willians Astudillo around, doesn't it?- 27 replies

Women of the Diamond: The Fans
Rosterman replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In the world of dating services, I ended up searching for Minnesota Twins fan and connected with a wonderful lady and have been married going on 15 years this June, proposing to her via the Metrodome scoreboard in a game started by Matt Garza but won by Pat Neshek. Also, her engagement ring was a pretty jazzy Twins World Series replica! She even would purchase the partial season-ticket package during the years when our schedules permitted more games live! I am always a bit jealous as she finds TC Bear to be quite lovable. And every State Fair when we visit Twinsland, Tony Oliva talks to her more than me. Thanks for seeking out all the wonderful fans of all ages and showing the Minnesota love for baseball, the sport that should be America's pastime and not running #2 to football. (photo from the wet and cold first game in the Dodgers series.) -
I almost want to see Arraez at first base. At least until Kirilloff comes back! Then just cycle thru Sano at DH as needed. Cubs beat Pirates 21-0. Pirates only used three pitchers for this stumble and one position player on the mound for the 8-innings they had to cover.

In Appreciation Of Dick Bremer
Rosterman replied to Dave Overlund's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Being the play-by-play for television is quite different than radio, as your audience IS watching the game with you. Which is why someone like Dick works extremely well. He is drenched in Twins lore, does his pre-game homework, and tries his hardest to get the "other" person to be insightful about the game...yet still keep track of the action. That doesn't mean that the "other" body in the booth can just sit back and wing it from Bremer's conversation points. They also have to do homework. People often forget how much work goes into laying out a broadcast. You have to review player stats and make notes on when to talk about what, be familiar with pitching styles, have feeds on what is thrown and how fast and stay on top of the count, let alone the bodies on the field. What is nice about having players in the booth is that they can talk about the game from the on-field standpoint. Tom Kelly is wonderful, but needs to be regulated by Bremer more often than not (have to get the plays in, as well as the ad breaks and plugs). Bert, like Gladden on the radio side, shows you that work and dedication improve you over time. Bert started to fallback on sameness, but often supplemented it with more humor than you usually get from a broadcast booth. Dick has a wondeful deep voice. He looks good in his blazer. He is truly professional across the board. Yes, he has hometown giddiness, but he keeps it in check and doesn't let himself become the story of a game...never. At his best, he can be like the guy sitting with you in the stands and you talk all thru the game, and also keep score on your scorecard (who does this anymore). Verbally writing down what is happening. Dick was so lucky, coming into the broadcast market when cable was just beginning (and they were looking for "the cheap" for announcers. The real announcers were always the radio booth and WCCO where you ahd to be able to sell product besides the game. Not all games were broadcast on television like they are today. He became the hometown gem thru patience, hardwork, and too many broadcast partners to mention becoming the glue for the visual play-by-play for 40 years! -
Twins Have Important Reinforcements Close

MICHAEL PINEDA who had Visa issues and accepted a trip to the minors to get in shape and was booked for three starts at Toledo got the call early by the Tigers after two starts. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/04/tigers-notes-mize-manning-pineda.html The Nats have called up Sam Clay, who walked as a minors free agent from the Twins.
