    I'm starting to wonder if the Twins could have too many outfielders.

    What gives? Minor league starters should be stretching out at this point in the season? Henriquez is so young, folks. People forget we got him as part of the Mitch Garver trade. Glad to see him shine in long relief. Bard Peacock is also picthing well, as is Sisk, a prospect to watch. Curtis Terry gone. the 11th minor league free agent signed in the off-season that the Twins have jettisoned. More than two dozen signed. Three have gotten major league time. And the Twins have cycled in another nine since the season started.

    The pain is keeping these guys on the 40-man, and not having them for a good part of nexzt season. Lewis will still have to play a significant amount of time in the minors, and the Twins will need to hope Corea stays, or do a patch job with folks like Palacios in the mix. Canterino won't be back until sometime next season and the Twins will likely limit his innings, if not put him in relief situations. Chances are he will still be at AA ball. Then most of 2024 at AAA ball. If they don't add him to the roster, anotehr team might grabn him (like they did Burdi) but be forced to play him sooner rather than later (and could have the consequences that happened when the Pirates did this with Burdi). I have no trouble keeping an arm or player on the 40-man who will not produce in 2023 for the major league club. But this year the Twins have Balazovic, Henriquez, Dobnak, Maeda, Strotman, Enlow all NOT doing anything for the Big League Club. I can understand Maeda being carried. And he might till be back in September. But the hopes we had for the others is so quickly disappearing and doubtful about who should come back in 2023. And with the case of Rodriguez, you lose minor league time, and fall back. Possibly quickly passed, or you become a Baddoo situation where a team might grab you before the Twins decide to elevate you to the roster, waiting for a continued advance thru the minors. That is still a couple of seasons away, but.....

    Rosters only expand to 28 these days. I never quite figured that out as I would think the player's union would love to see 5-7 additional guys get major league play and join the big boy's union.

    Too many? No. You can also throw Archer into this mix. Coming into this season the Twins had: Ober, Ryan, Paddock, Bundy, Archer, Gray and Winder with Smeltzer, Sands, Balazovic, Henriquez, Enlow in the wings, as well as Vallimont. Enlow and Vallimont you hoped would make AAA. We figured Sands, Balazovic and maybe Henriquez would see some time in the majors. We also plugged in Gonzales, Rodriguez and Sanchez, for some odd reason. And we are sitting here on August 10th with a rotation of JUST five arms and one in the wings (Smeltzer). Most of whom can barely make it throw the fifth. I never thought the Twins would be where they are, in first place FOR MOST OF THE SEASON. Especially without a real closer. Now, they got the closer. But they still could use a top-flight A#1 rotation arm...maybe buy one in the off-season. Yes, 2023 looks wonderful. Ryan, Gray, Mahle, Maeda, Ober, Paddock, WInder. That is 7 riches. Dobnak and Smeltzer in the wings. Varlanmd is up at AAA. MJaybe Woods-Richardson and Canterino will egt some AAA innings to end the season. Then we can say that MAYBE they will be on board for some starts in 2023, and the rotation consideration in 2024. But of course we thought these guys would get some starts in 2022, and be in line for a call for fulltime rotation spots in 2023: Balazovic, Henriquez, Sands, Enlow, Strotman. We saw how that has worked out. Never enough arms. And if you feel you are set, then those probably 2023 "rookies" should've been dangled more as tradebait for a first flight rotation arm who could help next season (Montas). And, as we have seen, the best prospects can be worth zero if they don't produce.

    We need rotation arms to go more than 4-5 innings. Bundy is questionable. Archer should explore the bullpen, for now. Maybe that will happen when Winder or Ober come back. You need to advance that runner. And then egt them home. And the Twins will need to address catcher. Maybe Leon will be a stud for the remainder of the year! But the key is to have starting pitchers pitch like starting pitchers. You can keep rotating guys in-and-out of the pen from St. Paul, or overusing your top key arms.

    Wander needs to jump to at least Wichita. He becomes a minor league free agent this season, so he can go elsewhere if he wishes.

    He signed a good contract. If he does suepr great, he can walk and lay the market. If he doesn't (like right now) his agent can put out feelers, but he is still guaranteed a great payday.

    Pagan grimace? Oh, no. We need a replacement. Is Duffey still available? Can we bring him back? Or...The Return of Cotton or Minaya or THORNBURG!

    I would even welcome a return of Cotton. Moran will be back after he spends a few more days in days in the minors although the flip side is they can’t option him out again fir the season I believe. if Pagan is basically regulated to mop up, even Strotman can fulfill that role and probably face at least 9 batters.. Pagan seems to still have rusted life to try and make the Padres deal look okay although San Diego has jettisoned their end of the deal.

    I felt 2022 was going to be a rebuilding year. Yet, because of the weakness of the division, the Twins have been competitive and have showcased so much young talent. They parted with some players, a couple they might regret if current "new" talent regresses in the coming year. But who knows where prospects ever...go. Going thru an active trade deadline, the Twins also had to get a real feel about just who otehr teams might covet. And those bodies that you can't give away (Strotman, Balazovic have to be running on fumes, but I hope the Twins give Balazovic another chance, but removing him from the 40-man will allow him to make a decision to stay or not). If you look at all the injuries throughout the team and organization, the team is still rich in probable players who can contribute.

    Isola is on a rehab assignment. A decision will have to be made quickly on Palacios as he will be a minor league free agent once the season ends. Depending on how Pagan continues to pitch, or if the bullpen suffers an injury, see Sisk getting a cup of coffee. Maybe Schulfer, too. But the Twins will probably run the gamut of Felix, Peacock, Wood as well as a return of Cotton or Minaya before trying someone totally new.

    I'm not sure he will join the bullpen of a contender. All teams have to be pretty set. That Cotton keeps getting passed on. Would you consider him, or Minaya, or even Sanchez and Smith worse or better. Right now all would be cheaper than Duffey.

    You run the risk of getting injured. So depending on the length or amount, he could depart for a longterm deal, anything over fve years and $125+ million at this point. I'm sure he would like more, with the opt outs depending on actualy amount paid at 3-5 years. But he has to put up better numbers than he is currently doing for the Twins. Even a short stint on the IL can hurt his progress to a much bigger contract. The Twins 3-year deal is a nice buffer as long as he stays healthy. He would still be a young free agent and could get a 5-7 year deal easily if he proves himself healthy, even after the Twins payouts. And it was a gamble for the Twins, too. They could be on the dcket for three years of money if something happened to Correa. But better than paying ut for 5-7 years at the same yearly average.

    I shook my head at that line-up, too. Kudos to new pitcher Mahle for reinforcing that Rocco should never let a starter pitch into the sixth inning.

    Dud the Twins dangle Smith Pagan Cotton and Duffey during the trade deadline. Any might thrive in another environment. I had jokes that Duffey would improve rather than falter. Was made the Reins didn’t give him (instead of Cologne) closing chances a year ago. Because he was going to return to the team and might still have it to be the inbetween guy in what I thought would be more of a rebuild year.

    Kepler is a must return. I would not be adverse to Sanchez being more of a DH except the Twins still need to play a Miranda Arraez and Urshela every game possible, Maeda will be back.

    Let's get another inning out of Megill. Okay, I guess we shouldn't have sent him out. But then Duffey does nothing but allow Megill to look bad in the end, while he looks worse. Cotton and Moran. Two guys sent out who are better than the ones we sent to the mound yesterday. You can afford to keep one of Pagan or Duffey, if you wish, for those out-of-hand mopup games, or if you have the 9-3 lead. But right now, NOT both. Create an injury time if you really want to keep them on the team.

    I don't expect Mickey to stay, but what an at bat! Lots of minor league shuffling to happen in the next 10 days as draftees find places and people move about for the rest of the season.

    Current top prospects? Well, some have made it. Others are on life-support, which is sad (Balazovic, Enlow, Sands). But go back and look at Top Prospects and you always ask, well, where did they go. CES was having a tremendous season. His second in pro-ball, remember. I was wondering how the Twins were going to fit him into their team in the future. But, now, we get to watch the Reds field a team of many former Twins someday.

    I was thinking Kubel, too. You can have surgery. And he has. You can take drugs, which do marvelous things, but also does things to you longer term. I start thinking Jim Eisenreich. At what point does he move past the issues and just play ball, masking his hurts and pains. Yet I also think of Chuck Knoblauch. Things just happen. I want the Twins to stay with him, work with him, and do what is best to keep him playing baseball in some capacity for the Twins as long as he can.

    Gipson-Long eligible for Rule 5 draft. I'm sure he'll get another season in the minors. I don't see a team adding them to their 26-man roster. But he would've faced a potential logjam in Twins-land come the fall of 2024. Fulmer will get a chance to shine. Pain with the signings of Lopez and Fulmer is that the Twins need to egt rid of a couple of bullpen arms. Add in the fact that Thielbar is coming back. You could say Pagan, Smith and Duffey are on the bubble, but the Twins could just as easily send Moran abck to the minors or part with Megill. Be interesting to see if Cotton stays with the Twins (he was signed to a major league contract, so he does cost a bit more if a team wants him). We also forget that the Twins recently added a slew of arms from other organizations: Ben Heller, Brock Stewart, Hunter Wood, Brad Peacock, Michael Felix as well as the dwindling list of guys signed earlier for St. Paul (down to Gossett, Jurado, M. Sanchez) as well as former Twins Minaya, Thornburg amd D. Rodriguez.

    You always give up talent, but there are now 17 new players drafted that will float into the Twins system. So only time will tell. CES will be an inetresting guy to watch. The Reds could be "Twins could've" the next few seasons if Petty also advances fast!
