    SIMMONS! Seriously, Simmons at SS and Buxton in CF would already be unfair. With Donaldson, Kepler, and Jeffers, that's a darn good defense

    We are starved for on-base guys. Why would we drop Arraez? IMO, fill the *real* hole, shortstop defense, with Simmons, and play either him or Polanco as a super sub while waiting for Lewis.

    Agreed re "Non-tendered placeholder", and I'm hoping it's Simmons. I might also correct the (excellent) OP slightly with: Archetype #2: Starting Pitchers Recovering from *Surgery* Hill and Pineda had already had surgery for their issues, and were taking expected recovery time while being free agents. I'd worry about signing a pitcher who has missed time, but has had no intervention or other reason to expect a robust recovery

    This works if we have a quality bat in the super utility position. Maybe that guy is both cheaper and more useful than a full time mashing DH

    I wonder whether certain players exemplify this more than others, and how much a few key players altered the overall stats. Sano, Kepler, and Garver all had struggles, but they all looked a little different. Did they contribute the bulk of 1, 2, and 3, respectively?

    Thanks for asking the question. I agree that it's not about scouts v. stats or old-school v. analytics. Balls in play are just plain more fun. A couple possible fixes, which start to stretch into the ridiculous: Reduce rosters. Fewer pitchers means more times through the order, and less ability to rely on just heat. Plus same-sided batters might swing more defensively? The impact of this might be marginal Move the fences out/up. We do live in an era of stadiums that are easier to hit home runs in, and where it's a feat to produce a triple Remove/modify the foul-bunt strikeout. Make the bunt a palatable option again, force teams out of the shift. Deaden the ball further 8 fielders? 80-foot baselines? No mound at all? Over the fence is a double?

    Let me preface this by saying I love Cruz, and I value known production. But. Not signing Cruz, in addition to saving money for other needs, would also make it possible to find room and playing time for all of our MLB-ready hitting prospects, plus both catchers, while also leaving room on the roster for glove-first utility players. Thus it could improve our defense, our lineup flexibility, and our player development. One could imagine the following hitters on the roster: Rooker Garver Sano Arraez Donaldson Polanco Kiriloff Buxton Kepler -- Jeffers Larnach Lewis/FA (note Lewis could play good defense at either CF or SS) Gordon/FA

    If bad calls decline every year for 12 years, then: 1) there are skills that can be learned to be more accurate 2) those skills are being learned by MLB umpires

    I would love to say bring up Lewis and let him play all over. He profiles as a good defender at short, and possibly fantastic at third or in center. But it appears that his bat isn't ready, and we don't want to miss out on the potential of an all around star. Sigh

    Rangier infielders necessitate less extreme shifting. Donaldson is indirectly displaying pride in his fielding, and the Twins should listen. We definitely missed more than his bat in the playoffs.

    Gonzalez, Adrianza, Castro/Avila and Cave have got plenty of playing time under Baldelli. Not hard to imagine that Lewis, Kiriloff, Rooker, and Jeffers would also, even with Polanco and Garver as starters. Rooker is a little tougher while Cruz or Rosario are on the roster. Gordon or Javier might have an opening, too, if Lewis' bat is good enough for the corners. One postseason lesson that teams seem to be absorbing is that a young. talented bench is better than a seasoned, mediocre bench. So that's my vote.

    The perfect time to call this out. It can't be an accident that this many veteran acquisitions have deep postseason experience. It clearly is something the FO has shopped for. Another name not often mentioned is Tyler Clippard. He has also been through the wars and come out on top. I'm hoping Rocco has a more significant bullpen role in mind for him.

    I know I worry too much, but between this flat game and the fact that we weren't desperate for either the Bailey DFA or the Colina promotion.. Did something happen off the field we aren't hearing about?

    I'm ok with this, except I think you have to put both Pineda and Hill on the roster. If Hill is sharp, coming in as a lefty in long relief could blunt a rally nicely. Last hitter: for OBP, I'd say Wade. But to protect Arraez, it probably has to be Blankenhorn

    I have to think the rest of the way is: Tue: Maeda Wed: Hill Fri: Pineda (or Berrios, whoever you want in game 2) Sat: Berrios (or Pineda, whoever you want in game 3) Sun: Odorizzi, Dobnak, or Bailey (they have to audition a 5th for the playoffs) Right? Unless they bring Dobnak back on Tuesday?

    Jeffers seems to be earning the Margo treatment from Baldelli - he finds a way to play his glove as often as possible

    Is Brent Rooker looking like a better choice than Cave or Wade? Is the lack of James Rowson enough to explain the (almost) team-wide power outage? Too bad that the season is so short that one bad week looms so large.

    The various replacements show their benchworthiness more each game. We either need people back or need to make some bold promotions and hope.
