    JDL might not be Kershaw, but he certainly would help one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball. Rebuilds aren't completed after one transaction. Moving Dozier for a solid starting pitching prospect would be a step in the right direction.

    That depends on the context in which you view the trade. If they walk away from this deal and end up trading Dozier at the deadline for a lesser package then it was a good deal. Like I said, we need to be realistic about his value moving forward. That isn't to say they need to take this deal now, or that nothing better could come along, but you also have to consider the likelihood of that happening. If the Twins are going to wait until they're blown away by an offer for BD, then they're likely going to end up holding onto him until he walks in 2 years and that would be a mistake.

    Sure you are. Demand does drive the market. Part of demand though is appeal. Coming off a 40+ HR season and on a friendly contract for 2 more years, Dozier has a lot of appeal. If he starts next season like he did 2016 or even at a level somewhere between the first and second half of last year, and you combine that with the loss of almost a full year of team control that luster of appeal begins to fade. You're assuming his value can only go up. What if this isn't the valley but rather the peak of his value. You're also banking on the market for a 2B to change considerably as well. It could all work out (I hope it does) but I don't think its unrealistic to look at the current offer and think it might be the best they get for Dozier. Personally I would like to get more for him, but everybody who is so staunchly in favor of the Twins walking away also seems to be ignoring the risk they take by holding onto him. I find it difficult to believe that this is as easy of a decision as some think.

    You might want to check the ages and salaries of that Cubs core. I don't think anybody is thrilled with JDL + small pieces for Dozier but I also don't think its unfair to ask if this might be their best offer. If the list of teams in the market for a 2B is short and this was the best offer the Twins could get for Dozier at his peak value then I agree with the previous sentiment that we need to be realistic about what kind of package he'll bring back. By holding onto Dozier you're banking on him repeating his career year through the first half, the market for a 2B expanding, and a contending team deciding they're willing to pay more for 1.3 years of Dozier than they were for 2 this offseason. That seems like a lot to ask for.

    Paying $18+ million for a one year deal and giving up what is essentially a late 1st round pick isn't appealing. Add to that the fact Bautista is a 36 year old who is coming off his worst season since 08', and at this point is only a DH, which is already an overcrowded position. It makes no sense.... His numbers at Target Field are cartoonish but if he is wearing a Twins uniform that means he no longer has the luxury of hitting against one of, if not the worst, pitching staffs in baseball every time he steps into the box there.

    To me this sounds like ignore very real problems and just hope for the best. I can't see that helping this team in any way.

    Honestly after losing 90+ in five of six seasons I don't know how much of a hit team interest can really take at this point. Those of us still left going to games and following the club are resigned to that fact that we're doomed to root for this franchise for life....

    He has been wildly inconsistent during his "good," years and was flat out terrible last year. I'm not saying they should non-tender him, it would be dumb to do that, but he doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

    ^^^^ This all day... I'm lukewarm on the signing. Castro is an upgrade, albeit a slight one. The contract is good and he isn't exactly blocking a stud prospect. If the Twins (Molitor) can use the Castro/Murphy platoon effectively its a solid addition.

    Truth. I'm not advocating for a rushed approach, I'm just pointing out that unless the Twins make major trades or become actual players in the FA market they run the risk of those young position players leaving before the team can truly be competitive. Windows don't stay open forever; this team needs to do something other than just show patience with pitching development.

    "Of course, we don’t want to wait four or five years for Berrios or other pitching prospects to take off in their careers" Obviously nobody wants it to take that long but the bigger issue is that the team can't afford to wait 4-5 years for the pitching to finally develop. If the Twins had an average rotation in place maybe they could be more patient waiting on younger pitchers to step in but given the current state and the fact that so much of the rebuild burden has been placed on younger players contributing waiting another 4-5 years just isn't feasible. They're going to waste too many potentially competitive years with a young, cost controlled core reaching their prime.

    This ^^^^^ The comparison starts and ends at the fact they both became full time relievers at age 27. All May needs to do is start throwing left handed, develop the nastiest slider in the game, show elite control, and bump is K rate. Seems pretty unlikely.... Hopefully he gets an actual shot at the rotation this year.

    I don't know how adding a 4th OF as an upgrade over Grossman is a bad thing. It shouldn't be difficult to get that bench OF ABs without sacrificing development time for either Buxton, Kepler, or Rosario. Honestly, at this point Rosario has the look of a platoon/4th OF himself so having a capable backup is important. Granite has one year at AA and is far from a lock to see time with the Twins this year. If Palka starts this year like he did at AA last season then yeah he'll definitely be up but if he picks up where he left off at AAA then he's looking more like a September call up. Its a smart decision to have low risk high reward contracts that can swapped for assets or dumped if a prospect pushes for playing time.

    Couldn't agree more. Adding a 4th OF and some bullpen pieces only helps this team. I don't see how making a small investment in those parts with the idea of flipping them at the deadline hinders the Twins at all. They have a wave of young bullpen arms coming up but wasn't that the plan last year? I think we all received a taste of how volatile prospects, especially pitching prospects, can be last season. I'm all for letting the kids play but looking at the current state of the bullpen I see no harm in purchasing a few lotto tickets. The "worst case scenario," is that the prospects perform as anticipated and the Twins dump a few small contracts.

    Flip flops on a minor league or some other sort of very team friendly contract. If it doesn't work out the team isn't hurt financially and the player can be waived. Its the ultimate low risk move with potential pay off. For a team like the Twins who could use some bullpen additions to start the year it would be a questionable decision not to employ this type of strategy.

    I agree that Plouffe should be bouncing back somewhere else next season. Its likely that Berrios and Sano have better seasons in 2017 so expecting more from them makes sense. Unless Rosario has an epiphany and realizes that strike zone control and going into ABs with a plan are important I can't see him being anything other than the guy he was last year. Its disappointing, if he could find a way to reach base more often and his slugging percentage did creep back up near .460 the Twins would have an incredible outfield moving forward. As it stands now he is a solid 4th outfielder/not bad starting LF for a rebuilding team. I'm not sold on Gibson at all. I think at this point we know what he is; an inconsistent 4-5th starter. 2015 was a good year for him, but it was sandwiched between two uninspiring years. Looking at his 2015 season as the true Gibson and hoping he hits that again is like banking on Hughes repeating his 2014 season. He very well could have runs of success next season but they are almost certain to be followed by equally terrible starts. Seriously, the guy is actually Jekyll and Hyde.

I'm not dying to trade Dozier but this move makes so much sense. If they couple it with the non-tender of Plouffe those two moves should free up enough space to bring in a catcher who is more than just a stop gap for the year. I would be happy with Castro but if mid tier indeed has bled into the the upper tier I would rather see the Twins go after a catcher like Wieters.

    Molitor loses his favorite player Dantana?!!? Nooooooo...... On a serious note though, I'm ok with a majority of the plan. The largest disagreement I have is whether the team will be competitive. I think its a pipe dream at best to hope this team is anything close to resembling competitive. I would rather all FA decisions be made with the idea that in 2-3 years they could theoretically challenge for a playoff spot. Soto might be a stopgap, but for what exactly? The Twins don't have any stud prospects coming up at the position. If you sign Soto this year, you're in the same position next year; looking for catching help. If they can get a deal done with Castro or Wieters and lock up an important position for the next 3-4 they should do it. I would rather see Sano get another shot at 3B but if he can't, I've advocated for Polanco to see time at 3B. I like that you had a backup plan early in the season for Hughes and Perkins. Hughes is a massive question mark and Perkins hasn't been able to stay healthy the last few years so theres a good chance the Twins get nothing out of both of them. Mejia as the 5th starter is meh, I would rather see May. They can hopefully do better than putting Boshers back in the bullpen if that scenario plays out. I would much rather seem them sign a low risk high reward reliever and have the chance to flip that person at the deadline when the Twins are out of contention. I'm not a big Santiago fan but I understand why people would want him back. I've said it before, but tendering him a contract makes that Nolasco trade even more confusing. You trade a bad pitcher who is "expensive," and a top prospect you've failed to develop, for a starter who is slightly less awful but just as "expensive." The fact they could non tender Santiago and save money along with moving Nolasco was supposed to be enough to make the deal palatable. Instead, it looks like they'll tender Santiago that contract so they save no money, they have a pitcher who is marginally better and a team that looks like it could lose 100 games again. Oh, and they gave up a player who was once one of their top prospects to do so. That makes zero sense to me.
