Article: Nunez Traded To Giants For LHP Prospect
KirbyDome89 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sounds like a lot of something to me. We have yet to see Meyer get a real shot to start for the Twins but at worst they have a hard throwing relief pitcher. May is in the same boat. I'm not sure why receiving a potential 4th starter for a utility guy who is a defensive liability and is had a career 2 months at the plate is a bad trade. Yeah Murphy has been terrible but last I checked Hicks wasn't exactly killing it for NY, and he certainly didn't tear it up in his time with the Twins either. -

Article: Twins Trade Deadline Tidbits
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That was exactly my point; if they aren't willing to push aside some trash because they're paying them larger salaries, then moving Santana or Gibson would at least bring back some sort of prospect and give May/Berrios a secure spot in the rotation. It isn't the most desirable situation, but standing pat at the deadline and rolling into next season with basically the same starting staff is even worse IMO. Judging by Antony's comments regarding Santana it doesn't sound like he is going anywhere. I honestly am not sure if the Twins just don't want to move him but are afraid to admit it and face some backlash, or they're actually delusional enough to think he's worth a top prospect. -
Article: Twins Trade Deadline Tidbits
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not going to lose my mind if Santana sticks around and I didn't think Gibson would be dealt. I will say though, with the exception of Milone, all these starters are coming back next season. Will the Twins finally remove Nolasco from the rotation? Will May finally start some games? What are they doing with Hughes? Berrios should be a lock along with Duffey and Gibson. If the correct decisions are made and the starting rotation reflects the future of the team rather than who on the team is owed the most money, I'm fine with holding onto Santana and/or Gibson. If we're subjected to another season of below average veterans pitching with a longer leash than they should have, and blocking younger players then sadly I would have to say I'm on the "trade them for what you can get," side. Santana might not bring a ton back, but his value definitely isn't declining right now and most importantly, moving him frees up a rotation spot. Gibson has been up and down as usual but he's younger and much cheaper than Santana. It isn't an ideal scenario, but if you don't have confidence in the Twins to clear the "logjam," (can the worst pitching staff in baseball really have a "logjam?") in the rotation, then the position of trading Santana or Gibson makes complete sense. They may not receive a haul in return, but a spot opens up for a guy like Trevor May, and there is value in that. -
Article: Ryan Dismissal Leaves Many Questions
KirbyDome89 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins were in 2 very different places when Ryan and Smith took over so I'm not sure overall record is a fair assessment of their tenure. I believe he was talking about the slew of terrible trades/baseball decisions Smith made during his time as GM. Whether or not he had people in his ear, the final decision was his and he ultimately had to bear responsibility. His time was totally negative, the Twins signed and drafted most of the young talent we're seeing right now under Smith's watch. Acquiring talent wasn't an issue for him, the problem was assessing the value of it and holding onto it.- 87 replies

Article: Twins Fire General Manager Terry Ryan

I think there is quite a bit of damage that could be done by Antony if he decides to start shipping off prospects/ young cost controlled players who are supposed to be part of the future. -

This is the real question. TR was set to go, but the timing of the move raises a lot of questions. The importance of this trade deadline in particular makes me a bit anxious knowing Antony is the one calling the shots. -

Article: Commitment Issues
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The futures game invite isn't a guarantee of MLB success but it was hard to watch him throw and not feel a twinge of anger. I think the last 2 sentences perfectly sum up a good number of the decisions made the past few years. -
I agree it is going to take time with the younger players. I think the issue with development is spot on. Making sure a player is ready to play at the MLB level when they're promoted, not wasting option years, making sure when players are up they're getting playing time not sitting on the bench, giving a young player a chance to fail before shipping them back down (especially when you're the worst team in baseball); these are all a part of player development.

Article: Setting Up For The Second Half
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm hopeful that May can use some "rehab," time to stretch out a bit, it would be nice to see him in the starting rotation again. I agree that just because the team is bad it doesn't mean you get rid of anybody who has value, but they should always listen. If they get a decent offer for Santana then they should flip him. Next season they'll have Gibson, May, Berrios, and Duffey. Santana fits nicely to complete the rotation but I don't see him as a key piece. The staff has been terrible this year even with him and I don't see him or the staff improving a ton while he stays. The Twins won't miss his contract either. Its a sad statement, but if they're going to have a terrible starting rotation, then it might as well be a cheap one so monetary resources can be allocated to other areas of need (I'm trying to convince myself they will). Also if they can get a player or two who will be ready to contribute in a couple years when the team is (hopefully) better, that is more beneficial than having Santana with the team pitching through losing/mediocre seasons until his contract ends.- 96 replies

Article: Twins Must Clear Infield Logjam Quickly
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The entire point of the rebuild the past 5 (4 really) years was to stock up on young talent and let it take over. Waiting to trade those players until they are ready for a shot in majors makes no sense.- 64 replies

Article: Twins Must Clear Infield Logjam Quickly
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He is out of options next year, which means the Twins need to give him ABs to find out what they have or history (Arcia) is doomed to repeat itself. There is no point in bringing Polanco up to waste away on the bench. If the Twins won't clear a spot for him then he should be in AAA playing every day.- 64 replies

Article: Twins Must Clear Infield Logjam Quickly
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed there isn't really an easy decision. I'm hoping they can turn Nunez into something by the trade deadline. The contract is cheap, but that guy is going to come back down to earth at some point and it would be nice to see the Twins try to cash in. I don't particularly want to see Escobar traded. Nunez can't be a regular at SS and Polanco's defense is in question as well. If Polanco can't handle SS then you're right back where you started, trying to find room for him to play, but this time you have to either force Dozier out or trade Polanco.- 64 replies

Article: Oswaldo Arcia And The Limits Of Patience
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The comparison is actually pretty good but I would argue it the other way. The Twins knew what they had in Dean, a AAAA player who could get a few guys out in the big leagues if needed in a pinch. Jones is a hard thrower who has struggled with command but if he settled down could be a big league asset. Pitchers like Dean are readily available, just like middle IF with below average hitting and defense (Santana) are. Arcia might have a limited skill set but the skill he does possess is hard to find. You know what you're getting with Santana and it isn't good. Why not roll the dice on Arcia and actually give him consistent ABs? Even if he flames out, at the end of the day you're in the same position you were with Santana, a bad player holding a spot on the 25 man roster. As a side note I don't think the move should be viewed as Arica vs. Santana. There were plenty of other options available where the Twins could have kept both players. To me its another example of the Twins seeking comfort in the evil they know. -
Article: Oswaldo Arcia And The Limits Of Patience
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arcia's numbers last year were brutal. They aren't impressive so far this year either. But lets be honest, the "chance," the Twins gave him this season was sporadic playing time over the course of 3+ months. Robbie Grossman (our savior?) has more PAs in a month than Arcia has all season. I've commented on a lot of this in the other thread. SydneyTwinsfan nailed it on the OF situation. We've already hashed out the other player moves that could have been made rather than DFA Arcia. I'm not a Santana fan so I understand the added frustration of keeping him over Arica, but I think the bigger issue is that the Twins exposed a potential 30+ HR guy to waivers when they didn't have to. -

Article: Twins Designate Oswaldo Arcia
KirbyDome89 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arcia is a flawed player. He was terrible last year, but he absolutely can play at the major league level. I'm not sure how many organizations can just throw away 30+ HR power but I know the Twins aren't in a position to do that. Its frustrating that they'll give up talent and get nothing back. Its going to be even more maddening to watch him hit homers for another team. The most infuriating part though is the fact that a 20-46 team couldn't find a way to get Arcia consistent ABs before making a final decision on him. It blows my mind. Buxton and Kepler were both sent down this year, while Sano and Santana have been hurt. Grossman was signed less than a month ago, and yet Arcia couldn't sneak in some relatively consistent playing time? To top it off you have multiple position players with options (Park, Kepler) and a handful of scrub pitchers (Boshers, Ramirez) who nobody will lose sleep over if they're gone. I don't think Arcia is going to be Ortiz 2.0, but I do think he's a talented player who shouldn't be tossed out.- 267 replies

Article: Eddie Rosario Is Raking In Rochester
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That is a very fair question and its definitely one component of the problem. I think its too early to pass any judgement on Buxton and Kepler, especially after the way they've been handled. Rosario and Santana fell a little further than most expected but both were free swingers with little to no command of the strike zone so it isn't a shock to see the MLB struggles. If dregs are in place because players in the minors aren't quite ready to move then I'm alright with it (admittedly its hard to watch though.) If dregs are in place because because the FO did nothing all winter long and placed the only chance for success on the shoulders of unproven/young players then its a problem. I understand everybody wants to see the prospects get time. I do too. I just think there has to be a plan B and C when it becomes evident that some prospects need more time. There clearly were no such backup plans as the Twins were drunk off the aberration that was the 2015 record. At this point its hard to see what plan A was as well. -
Article: Urgency To Trade Plouffe Growing
KirbyDome89 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed that Sano at 3B would be better than in RF but I just want to be clear that Sano should be at 3B because he's a better defender, which in turns helps the team. He is no more at risk of crashing into a wall or getting hurt diving for a ball than Buxton or Kepler. Injuries are random and they're part of the game. IMO tommy john surgery and a couple hamstring pulls since joining professional baseball in 2010 doesn't make a guy injury prone. -
I think those words highlight a large part of the problem. The handling of the prospects by the Twins has been more than questionable. Berrios started 4 games. Meyer had 1 start. Even if you think none of them were good starts (personally I think Berrios 2nd and 3rd starts were decent) I don't know how you give top prospects such a short leash before sending them down. Growing pains are part of the process. The Twins have been preaching about the youth movement coming up through the farm system, yet it seems they can't commit fully to what building a young team truly entails. Buxton struggled last year and this year. He spent part of the 2nd half last year on the bench with the Twins. They were so sure he was ready this year they traded Hicks. Then 3 weeks into the season they're convinced he can't handle the big leagues and he's back in AAA. Something just doesn't add up. Buxton in AAA right now isn't a bad thing, but the process by which he landed there again is problematic. Rosario having a down year shouldn't be a shock but I don't think anybody saw a .200 avg. There wasn't much the Twins could do about that one so they get a pass there. Sano will come around. In the last week he's trending upward so hopefully that continues.

Article: How To Fix These Twins
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed this season is gone and stats don't really matter. I'm all for getting the young guys some playing time too. The problem is Murphy didn't just struggle to stay afloat, he drowned, and he's doing the same thing in AAA right now. If he turns it around, sure call him up, but he was awful to start the year with the Twins and he has been awful in Rochester. If things don't change at AAA then why would anybody expect them to if he's facing big league pitching. -
Article: How To Fix These Twins
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have to chuckle at the desire to see Murphy promoted as part of the youth movement. He's still hitting well below .200 at AAA right now and was terrible both offensively and defensively when he was up. I understand the catching situation is a joke, but penciling in Murphy as the everyday catcher towards the end of the season seems like a reach to me.
