  1. If you ignore the dominance in AAA over 2 years, and the fact he's one of their best pitchers then sure, there was no reason he should have given a shot at the rotation to start the season....
  2. I don't think its strange at all.... Santiago threw 8.2 innings and Berrios threw 6.2. If Hector can be ready in time to slot into the 2 spot I'm sure Jose could've made it work as the 5. Had the Twins wanted Berrios in the rotation to start the season they certainly could have made that happen. They had 0 interest in that option. They didn't have to skip the 5 spot in the rotation, the Twins chose to do that so they wouldn't have to bring him up. The Tepesch start was just the cherry on top.
  3. I would be thrilled that they moved a player who has the ability to walk in a couple years while he was at peak value. So be it? Everybody is tired of watching losing baseball, which is why I'm not in favor of turning down future help for the pitching staff in an attempt to sneak into a one game wild card. A .500 record through the middle of May is nice but building a competent rotation is better...
  4. The Rays have him past 2018 right? And he's cheaper right? And he would fill as massive hole on the team right? They have a healthy 2B, but how is their pitching looking? How about next year? How about 3-4 years from now? Folly is thinking that Dozier's status a tradable asset hasn't been damaged (or exposed) by his start this season. If DeLeon wasn't enough after his 42 HR season then good luck convincing another team to give you a better deal. This goes way beyond just this year. Everybody needs to get over the idea that a push for a one game wild card is somehow more valuable than sustained contention with a decent rotation. Enjoy two more years of Dozier and another 5+ of s*** pitching I guess. Like I said, where are they getting arms if not through trades? If they're just going to draw lines in the sand and refuse to move these guys for pitchers that could actually help the team beyond the next couple seasons then we'll witness a solid core of players and a patchwork of others that won't move past the first round. We've watched that performance over the last 15 years, there is no need for an encore.
  5. Dozier wasn't without warts. If I was the Dodgers GM and I was looking at that second half of 2015 combined with the start to 2016 I'm certain I would have hesitations about giving up a Berrios level pitcher too. Fair is determined by the market, and DeLeon was the best offer they could get. Where is this team going to find pitching? A lot of posters, myself included, want them to actually be players in the FA market but honestly, what are the chances that they sign even a number 2 starter? There isn't any help coming from the farm system either. Ervin is going to be 36 years old when his contract is up in two years, and Dozier can follow him out the door that offseason if he chooses. These guys are good players, and I get that nobody likes seeing their team trade away players of that caliber but at what point do they just admit that even if the deal isn't square in their eyes, it ultimately helps them out? If they're going to sit and wait for a king's ransom then they'll likely watch those guys leave. Do they trade what talent they can from the farm and cross their fingers they find a couple Jake Arrieta type pitchers?
  6. I actually love the strategy the Cubs used. Mike had a good point though about the Twins having to actually follow through on signing pitchers, or I guess we're hoping they make great trades but I would be 100% behind stockpiling the best talent and then when the team is ready to contend selling some of that talent to supplement. I really wish the Twins operated that way. Unfortunately it also puts a lot on your scouting and development, which have both been questionable to say the least. I'm not making excuses why they should't go that route, I honestly think they should, but ya know, they're the Twins...soooo.... I can't speak for everybody who was ok with the Dozier/DeLeon swap but DeLeon wasn't viewed as a future Cy Young winner. I didn't think it was a terribly unfair offer for a 2B coming off one hot second half. The Twins are pitching starved and they had the chance to land a solid, young rotation piece for a player who had a replacement and was likely to never have more value. You said it perfectly, the Twins don't have a ton of players to move for pitching, and IMO they passed on their best chance to move one of the few they do have. Who knows, maybe Dozier goes on another tear but I'm not holding my breath waiting for another 40+ HR season.
  7. My question is how long is the leash? If he has a "Mejia-like," start in one of his first couple outings is he going to get the chance to right the ship or are we going to watch another young pitcher be sent down after 3 starts?
  8. A month? He played his first game on April 8th and his last on the 21st for a whopping total of 12. Try two weeks. I haven't seen the Twins make an effort to add additional 1B/DH to the 40 man to keep Vargas in AAA. I also didn't hear them say a word about how Santiago needed to get stretched out before making his first start. If there is some kind of internal stance against participating in the WBC then it must only apply if your name is Jose Berrios....
  9. Vargas and Santiago send their regards from the MLB team...
  10. Wasn't that the line when the season started and some of us wanted Berrios to start in the rotation? We've watched Gibson and Mejia go down, we've had a 4 man rotation, we've already endured a Tepesch start and now we get to watch Wilk start a game and meanwhile Berrios continues to dominate in AAA. It isn't much ado about little. If Berrios' pitching schedule didn't match up and they needed a spot start then nobody would be complaining. But when you're repeatedly passing the guy up and giving starts to pitchers who are essentially waiver wire fodder then yeah, I think it's a big deal.
  11. If promotion was based on performance he should've been up weeks ago. Hell, he should've been the first one up after Mejia got the boot, so they clearly aren't valuing his performance at AAA. If they're convinced he needs "more work," then why is that coming against AAA hitters? Those were the same hitters that he faced while putting together those supposedly meaningless statistics. Its a massive contradiction.
  12. What makes no sense is dismissing over 200 innings at AAA as meaningless and then basing his return to the Twins on how he looks against AAA hitters.
  13. Silver lining: this should alleviate some anxiety about trades for a rental at the deadline. "AAA statistics don't matter, but the only way to know Berrios can handle another MLB stint is to continue to feed him innings at AAA and make assessments based on his performance." That rationale makes sense if you just don't think about it....
  14. The point would be that just as every HBP isn't the same, neither is every celebration. Like I said, there needs to be a way to make distinctions.
  15. Isn't that being argued to the point of absurdity though? If you're not allowed to different between celebrations and you have to condemn them all then the same rules must apply to every HBP right? I had an issue with Sano getting plunked and Machado ducking fastballs near his head, but I'm not rankled every time a batter gets hit. There has to be room to make distinctions.
  16. I can't think of many worse reasons to keep him in the rotation. I'm not saying you agree with that line of thinking but damn is that infuriating.
  17. Idk which is more annoying; the Royals still wearing those WS uniforms or watching Gibson "pitch."
  18. Please no. I would much rather they pull the plug at the point when he can't be effective rather than wait for a total implosion. I'm more on board with your initial 3-5 prediction, and I would lean towards 3 given I have zero faith in him. He's the 3rd starter by default and isn't going anywhere for a least a few starts but my god watching him pitch is like walking through a mine field; you're on edge the whole time and expect disaster with every move.
  19. It was spent in 2017. The "savings," from that trade are gone. They used the money to resign Santiago and they're paying part of Nolasco's salary this season.
  20. Its a tough call. The Twins could desperately use another effective starter and if Duffey has the potential to fill that role then you want to make sure he is given every opportunity to prove he can't. If I'm choosing between Berrios and Duffey to replace Gibson I'm going with Berrios though. I agree with the Trevor May comparisons. I doubt the Twins would force Duffey to continue starting in the same way they've kept May relegated to the bullpen but if he does have a good thing going I'm ok with him staying in the pen when there are better options to fill the vacant starter role. I think the real dilemma is if/when Hughes gets bumped. At that point it should be Duffey stepping into the rotation.
  21. I can't imagine that Mejia + parts would be the best package they're offered for Santana given he pitches reasonably well up to the deadline.
  22. Mark me down as cautiously optimistic. I have much more confidence that Ervin will have a good year than this team will. Although, that isn't exactly high praise. Hopefully he keeps it up until the deadline and the Twins pull the trigger. If I'm buying his 2017 start as a continuation of last season's success and not a streak then I'm going to need to see some games against teams that aren't KC or the Chi Sox, but so far so good.
  23. Honest question: Was the 13 man staff entirely thrust on Molitor, or are the Twins carrying 13 pitchers as a result of stubbornness from both the manger and the FO in regards to letting go of a pitcher they value differently? Also, what is with the not so subtle dig at Escobar? I'm content with him as the utility infielder.
  24. I haven't heard anybody write off his season. Its ok to be concerned that a guy who at one time was the top prospect in baseball and tore up every level of the minors leagues has struggled so much at the major league level. It isn't just the start of this season, it was almost all of last season and some of 2015 too. I'm still on that "be patient bandwagon," but I can't fault people for thinking about hopping off.
  25. I had the same question watching him so far this season. I was vocal about the Twins trying to mess with his leg action last season. I get that his K rate didn't really improve but his Sept. ABs looked much more comfortable. IMO you can learn to control the strike zone, Idk if you can ever "learn," to be comfortable. Hopefully this isn't a case of the team trying to push him back towards the toe tap. Whatever the reason for the poor PAs hopefully it turns around soon, I can be patient but its disheartening watching Buxton still struggle hitting.
