Article: Jose Berrios Flashes Something Special
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He has had more time with those coaches than Mejia at every level of the organization . If Mejia wasn't option A then he likely was option B. I'll give the FO the benefit of the doubt and say that decision wasn't made based on 14 innings pitched in ST. -

Unfortunately that possibility seems to be a pretty strong point of disagreement. I get that, but the people who have the most intimate knowledge of Berrios, the coaching and development staff, are all still in place. Falvey isn't "flying blind," for lack of a better term. To me the WBC/ST thing was an easier sell than simply saying "we want him to spend more time in AAA." The roster decisions during ST suggest they knew who was making the 25 man before the games started. That isn't an indictment or endorsement of the strategy. It's hard for me to imagine that if Berrios had thrown another 10 innings to match Mejia's total for the spring the decision would have been different. -

There was no twist, I was simply following the reasoning you laid out. Hmmm, maybe the incompetent one isn't me.... He becomes disgruntled, looses focus and his performance slips. He is bitter and holds the demotion against the Twins and they subsequently have no shot to keep him after his rookie deal expires.... That sounds like ridiculous speculation right? Well so does "he has to start on the road to avoid home boos," "he would lose all confidence," "he couldn't get comfortable with the MLB baseball,".... -

Dude, the point was they threw the same number of innings so "getting stretched out," to start the season was clearly possible... -

So by disagreeing with the move I'm calling the FO evil? Seems extreme... The whole pitching staff was garbage. They were looking to bring back in it's entirety what was one of the worst starting rotations in baseball. Included in that staff was a guy coming off major surgery who looked like a shell of himself and a rookie who had thrown all of 2 innings at the major league level. You don't have to dig too hard to see why it might make sense to give your top prospect, who also happens to be a pitcher and was absolutely dominant for over 200 innings in AAA a shot at the 5 spot. There was no risk involved. They cut bait on Mejia after 3 games. There were a lot of players that are still on this team who were bad last year. If the performance of the previous year was grounds for removal they wouldn't have been able to field a 25 man. -

I haven't seen a single post calling the team insane, evil, or incompetent. I wanted Berrios sooner, and I wish Mejia would've been given a longer leash. Isn't that having it both ways? Can't I want a top pitching prospect up and also want to see him given every opportunity to perform well? Why throw him back out there to fail again? I'll say it again, every argument for this being the "right," or "responsible," handling seems to come from the above belief. His last few starts don't validate that view anymore than they support him starting the season in the rotation. However, they're conveniently being used as affirmation that the repeat of AAA was necessary. That has been my argument the whole time. They couldn't know how he was going to fare until they let him throw against MLB hitters. I wish they would've done it sooner. Who knows how it would've turned out, but just as I can't proclaim he would've pitched like this in April, nobody else can say he's doing this because he wasn't up at that time. -

So he couldn't be ready to start the season because there would be too much media attention? I'm not saying it's meaningless, and I've been on the Park train since they won the right to sign him, but he clearly wasn't being considered for the 25 man going into ST. The same FO locked Hughes in after 2 poor starts. I'm not getting into the argument of how often true position battles should occur. Based on those type of moves it appears the FO knew who they were bring north before the games started. That's fine, but I'm tired of hearing that Berrios "did this to himself," by going to the WBC. Hyperbole much? There is a massive difference between bumping a starter back one game and running out some ridiculous 7 man rotation. I hope you can understand that difference... Avoid a home booing? Really? How frail is he? I seriously doubt they needed to hand pick his first start of the season. Reach.... -

Its an easy comparison when they threw the same amount of innings for the same team in the same tournament. Berrios has been a professional athlete for years now, he knows how to get his body ready. Check out some of his workout clips on twitter... I thought we were past winning spots in ST. Players are given positions based on "reputation," and expectations all the time. The 2017 Twins were no different. If the process was really that important they would've had Park on the bench as a 1B/DH instead of Sano and Gimenez giving Mauer time off at 1B. Its a 162 game season, they should be taking rest days where they can get them. Last I checked Cleveland is a pretty damn good team. You're reaching at this point. -

There isn't an answer for those points other than the Twins for some reason weren't keen on having one of their better pitchers in the rotation.... This organization is almost the exact same as it was the past 6 seasons. "He sealed his own fate. Seems to have worked out though." That says it all. The minute he was sent down any success he would have when he came back would automatically be attributed to going back to AAA. I can't say he would've started the year this well, I said in other threads the only way to know he was ready was to let him pitch for the Twins. In the same way, neither can you nor anybody else make the claim that the extra month + of minor league pitching flipped the switch, yet it's consistently being lauded on these forums as "the right move," and "the right time." -

It's relevant when they pitch the same amount of innings and we're told one can't be in the rotation because it would take too long to get stretched out. That obviously wasn't the case as Hector had no problem getting ready to start the second game of the season. If it's familiarity or the need to see him pitch I already pointed out that this is essentially the same FO that has watched Berrios the past few seasons. I've already touched on the ST aspect. If lack of MLB success/experience was the determining factor then why was Mejia the 5th starter? He had basically no MLB experience and the few innings he threw didn't go well last season. Obviously I wanted him to start the season with the Twins. It was disappointing that he didn't but I was a little excited to see Mejia as well. Honestly, I don't think Mejia was given enough rope but they made the call to send him down. From that point on, the 4 man rotation and the Tepesch start were just asinine. -

2 fewer innings than Santiago? It certainly wasn't an issue of "getting stretched out," which was what we were told. Everybody rails against using ST as a metric for measuring regular season success (likely the rational thing to do) but the second a player misses some time there it's a disqualification from the 25 man? In every other scenario ST is considered a SSS against lesser competition, so why is it now so important? If the argument is the Twins weren't able to see as much of him I would remind you that it's basically the same group of people who drafted him and brought him up through the minors. If anything they were much more familiar with Berrios than Mejia. -

If you ignore the dominance in AAA over 2 years, and the fact he's one of their best pitchers then sure, there was no reason he should have given a shot at the rotation to start the season.... -

I don't think its strange at all.... Santiago threw 8.2 innings and Berrios threw 6.2. If Hector can be ready in time to slot into the 2 spot I'm sure Jose could've made it work as the 5. Had the Twins wanted Berrios in the rotation to start the season they certainly could have made that happen. They had 0 interest in that option. They didn't have to skip the 5 spot in the rotation, the Twins chose to do that so they wouldn't have to bring him up. The Tepesch start was just the cherry on top. -
Article: Real Or Pretender?

I would be thrilled that they moved a player who has the ability to walk in a couple years while he was at peak value. So be it? Everybody is tired of watching losing baseball, which is why I'm not in favor of turning down future help for the pitching staff in an attempt to sneak into a one game wild card. A .500 record through the middle of May is nice but building a competent rotation is better...- 137 replies

The Rays have him past 2018 right? And he's cheaper right? And he would fill as massive hole on the team right? They have a healthy 2B, but how is their pitching looking? How about next year? How about 3-4 years from now? Folly is thinking that Dozier's status a tradable asset hasn't been damaged (or exposed) by his start this season. If DeLeon wasn't enough after his 42 HR season then good luck convincing another team to give you a better deal. This goes way beyond just this year. Everybody needs to get over the idea that a push for a one game wild card is somehow more valuable than sustained contention with a decent rotation. Enjoy two more years of Dozier and another 5+ of s*** pitching I guess. Like I said, where are they getting arms if not through trades? If they're just going to draw lines in the sand and refuse to move these guys for pitchers that could actually help the team beyond the next couple seasons then we'll witness a solid core of players and a patchwork of others that won't move past the first round. We've watched that performance over the last 15 years, there is no need for an encore.- 137 replies

Dozier wasn't without warts. If I was the Dodgers GM and I was looking at that second half of 2015 combined with the start to 2016 I'm certain I would have hesitations about giving up a Berrios level pitcher too. Fair is determined by the market, and DeLeon was the best offer they could get. Where is this team going to find pitching? A lot of posters, myself included, want them to actually be players in the FA market but honestly, what are the chances that they sign even a number 2 starter? There isn't any help coming from the farm system either. Ervin is going to be 36 years old when his contract is up in two years, and Dozier can follow him out the door that offseason if he chooses. These guys are good players, and I get that nobody likes seeing their team trade away players of that caliber but at what point do they just admit that even if the deal isn't square in their eyes, it ultimately helps them out? If they're going to sit and wait for a king's ransom then they'll likely watch those guys leave. Do they trade what talent they can from the farm and cross their fingers they find a couple Jake Arrieta type pitchers?- 137 replies

I actually love the strategy the Cubs used. Mike had a good point though about the Twins having to actually follow through on signing pitchers, or I guess we're hoping they make great trades but I would be 100% behind stockpiling the best talent and then when the team is ready to contend selling some of that talent to supplement. I really wish the Twins operated that way. Unfortunately it also puts a lot on your scouting and development, which have both been questionable to say the least. I'm not making excuses why they should't go that route, I honestly think they should, but ya know, they're the Twins...soooo.... I can't speak for everybody who was ok with the Dozier/DeLeon swap but DeLeon wasn't viewed as a future Cy Young winner. I didn't think it was a terribly unfair offer for a 2B coming off one hot second half. The Twins are pitching starved and they had the chance to land a solid, young rotation piece for a player who had a replacement and was likely to never have more value. You said it perfectly, the Twins don't have a ton of players to move for pitching, and IMO they passed on their best chance to move one of the few they do have. Who knows, maybe Dozier goes on another tear but I'm not holding my breath waiting for another 40+ HR season.- 137 replies

Article: Twins Claim LHP Adam Wilk From Mets
KirbyDome89 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A month? He played his first game on April 8th and his last on the 21st for a whopping total of 12. Try two weeks. I haven't seen the Twins make an effort to add additional 1B/DH to the 40 man to keep Vargas in AAA. I also didn't hear them say a word about how Santiago needed to get stretched out before making his first start. If there is some kind of internal stance against participating in the WBC then it must only apply if your name is Jose Berrios.... -

KirbyDome89 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wasn't that the line when the season started and some of us wanted Berrios to start in the rotation? We've watched Gibson and Mejia go down, we've had a 4 man rotation, we've already endured a Tepesch start and now we get to watch Wilk start a game and meanwhile Berrios continues to dominate in AAA. It isn't much ado about little. If Berrios' pitching schedule didn't match up and they needed a spot start then nobody would be complaining. But when you're repeatedly passing the guy up and giving starts to pitchers who are essentially waiver wire fodder then yeah, I think it's a big deal. -

If promotion was based on performance he should've been up weeks ago. Hell, he should've been the first one up after Mejia got the boot, so they clearly aren't valuing his performance at AAA. If they're convinced he needs "more work," then why is that coming against AAA hitters? Those were the same hitters that he faced while putting together those supposedly meaningless statistics. Its a massive contradiction.
