  1. I struggled with Carew. Frankly, I didn’t want to be accused of a double-standard when I used the “other teams” criteria against Kaat. I’ll admit it’s hard not to retire Carew’s number, but it’s hard to see all the players who had their numbers retired by more than one team (I like Hank Aaron but the Brewers retired his number - really???)
  2. That’s a tough one. Frankly, I think the Twins retire too many numbers. Kirby and Harmon are obvious. Tony and Joe are worthy. However, Rodney played much of his career elsewhere (like Kaat) and TK was a manager. Kent HrBek is the most questionable choice. Sorry to be such a negative guy here. Don’t get me started on lowering flags to half staff too much or I’ll be a complete pariah.
  3. Trade either Arraez or Polanco, then making the other our regular second baseman. The Twins are awash in quality infielders (other than proven defensive shortstops), so cash in that surplus to bolster other areas of greater need (starting pitching!!!). Donaldson and Sano do not have the trade value of Polanco or Arraez.
  4. For reasons unrelated to their quality of play, here is why I hope to see two of these players make it to Target Field: 1. Best New Promotion: Kalai’i Rosario Umbrella Drink Night. It’s the perfect promotion in the era of craft cocktails. MLB can loosen it’s uptight tie a bit and celebrate our Hawaiian player with tropical drinks at Target Field and free souvenir mini-umbrellas. More pineapple! 2. Best New Walk-Up Song: For Edouard Julien, from Quebec - written on the scoreboards - “Oui Will - Oui Will - Rock You.” Not listed 6-10, but I’m looking forward to the crowd singing “Valderi-Valdera” as home-run music for any player named Wander (that song being “The Happy Wanderer”).
  5. I belong to season ticket group that voted NOT to use our tickets after May (I was the lone dissenter). I found other ways to enjoy the COVID summer. I’m sure I’ll find ways to enjoy next summer too, without going to baseball games - If the season is canceled or limited. I am not alone. More casual fans will never return if there are two consecutive seasons of disinterest in baseball. The players and owners know this. They will not kill the goose that lays the golden baseball
  6. Mike Marshall was Gene Mauch’s go-to guy that closed out Twins wins. He turned a below average Twins team into an average team. But as a 9-11 year old, I am most grateful for Jim “Mudcat” Grant. There were other great years back in the day from Jim Kaat and Jim Perry. But Mudcat was my favorite Jim. Find us some video of Mudcat and the Kittens.
  7. Happy New Year. Hoping that a professional sport other than hockey is played at Target Field this year. My favored scenario: The virus wanes in January (just saw a talking head epidemiologist saying it will peak this month) - MLB and the players settle their differences by February 10, 2022, Twins sign a number one SP and take a flyer on another lesser SP, Twins sign a good one year Shortstop - and then play ball (never bringing back the dance off or the That’s How We Baseball slogan).
  8. I get it. The Twins didn’t TAKE Johan Santana, he was taken by the Marlins and traded for the Twins Rule 5 pick and some cash. But C’Mon. He was really a Twins Rule 5 guy. I guess it’s how one defines “Take”.
  9. Wasn’t this the team picked to win the division last season? Was last year an aberration??? What if Kepler bounces back, Sano plays all season like he did at the end of 2021, Kiriloff is a hitting machine, Ober and Ryan contribute???? This is a team that could be expected .500 or better. So hope is springing eternal here. Omicron burns out the pandemic in one big finale of infections (but reduced hospitalizations and death,) and normal baseball returns with the Twins contending like Bomba Squad 2.0. I clicked on 80-89. Now I just have to start believing.
  10. In 1997, The Twins record was 73-89. Brad Radke’s record for that team was 20-10. I know many of you don’t care about win-loss records. But for the rest of us, Radke’s performance was amazing that year.
  11. Some of the dislike for Schilling is based on his conservative politics. Gary Sheffield had a bad attitude, but that isn’t noted.
  12. Martin, Lewis, and Arraez are characterized here as players without a position. Another perspective is to look at them as players who can play many positions (SS, 2B, 3B, 1B and all three outfield spots). On top of that, I remember one commentator said the ceiling for Royce Lewis (as a draftee) was becoming another Derek Jeter (defense, offense and high character team leader). In other words, I wouldn’t trade Martin and Lewis for “My Friend Irma” at this time. OK, maybe Martin. Arraez clearly has trade value and could bring something in a trade.
  13. My take: Back in the days of the AWA, a wrestler couldn’t have a nickname of a previous or current AWA wrestler. So, when Bruiser Brody came to the AWA, he somehow had to have a different nickname because of long departed AWA wrestler Dick the Bruiser. So, He became known as King Kong Brody. This became problematic for the AWA when they signed King Kong Bundy. So, Bundy assumed the moniker Boom Boom Bundy. I hope my take properly shows my low level of interest in this acquisition. Give me credit for NOT reminiscing about another more famous Bundy, and not using him as a metaphor.
  14. My number one rule change would restrict shifts. Prior to the pitcher releasing the pitch, at least two players must be on “the dirt” (area designated by MLB rule) on each side of 2nd Base. This still allows for the shifting of infielders, but will reduce the extremes and the use of “short-outfielders” (sorry, if you really like watching a batter grounding out to short right field and being thrown out at first base). . By requiring the players to be on “the dirt”, it could also encourage more bunting. Note - this rule change does not prohibit the rare use of two outfielders with the third outfielder moving to the infield.
  15. I’m thankful that the Twins and MLB brought back live baseball to ballparks around North America, and I’m glad the Twins did NOT bring back the stupid, annoying Dance-off.
  16. Has anyone considered that Buxton may want to prove himself in 2022 in order to get a better contract in FA after the season? Not a slight on the Twins, but consider what logically could be “reality.” I suspect that Byron likely views himself as a victim of freak injuries (2021’s wrist injury) and “running into walls” injuries that he believes he is now able to avoid as a smarter, seasoned, veteran player. However, the Twins can’t afford to let him “play it out” (and join next year’s off-season bidding war). The Twins are more likely to get a good return this offseason than mid season 2022. If they are contending in midseason 2022, the option to trade Buxton is off the table completely. Now is the the time to make an effort to sign him, but upon being rejected - TRADE BUCk. That may be REbuilding; it may be REtooling: but it is likely to be REality.
  17. I don’t go with blowing up the future to push a long shot bid for a wild card. I’m glad Atlanta is succeeding against the cheaters. But it ain’t a blueprint.
  18. Going for the Braves vs anyone. Astros.- still marred by the trashcan scandal Dodgers - big market team with a huge payroll - not for me Red Sox - East Coast Media darlings who should be rejected by all here in flyover country Meanwhile, Atlanta was denied an MLB showcase earlier this year. I’d love to see the “Manfred Man” (with no Earth Band) have to hand over the Championship Trophy to the Braves in the City he eschewed. Finally, with the Braves in the World Series we get to shout “Eddie! Eddie!” at our TV screens when Rosario does well for the Braves AND shout “Eddie? Eddie?” If he blows the series with one of his bonehead plays. The Rosario roller-coaster drama is inevitable if the Braves make it. Go Braves.
  19. For those of us looking for a team to favor simply as fans - I suggest we are relegated to Atlanta. I agree that the “Chop” is annoying, but consider the alternatives The “big city” Dodgers are trying to spend their way to a Championship, and Houston is still stained by the trashcan cheating scandal. Boston is a Northeast Team, with its long overhyped “rivalry” with the Yankees - those of us in flyover country shouldn’t go for that!!’ That leaves the Braves by default. Finally, it would be nice to see the Commish, the “Manfred Man” (with no Earth Band”), forced to give Atlanta the biggest spotlight in baseball. THEY can’t move the World Series a mile higher!!!! So - Go Braves (but still wish the Brewers could have held on). Prediction: The Dodgers and Houston will win just as you said (except Houston does it in 5 too).
  20. This was a no-brainer. Hopefully, the Twins will write in Polanco at 2B with a Sharpie. No need to mess with success. Only Buxton gets the Sharpie treatment. All other position players are in pencil (for durability reasons, even Josh Donaldson might DH and share 3B duties with Arraez).
  21. So give me a scientific explanation. With my antibodies recently tested off the chart (>10), explain how having the virus neutralized in my bloodstream makes me an equal danger to someone who is unvaccinated and has cells become Covid factories producing more viruses at a high rate and causing sneezing to spread the virus further into the air. There is no coherent scientific explanation.
  22. Funny. Now try to get a vaccine for Kirk Cousins - before he becomes the Vikings super-spreader that some of us believed Andrelton to be (despite lame denials by the Twins brass) But then again, some skepticism of the “conventional wisdom” is often wise. Remember that allegedly “debunked” Covid origin “conspiracy theory” of the Wuhan Institute of Virology leak? In the last few months, it’s been generally UN-debunked and is seriously being considered as an explanation (check out Jon Stewart’s cogent and funny comments on this on Colbert’s Show). More important (possibly!) - Remember, when we all thought signing Max Kepler longterm was a great move?
  23. As our TOP short season hitter, I’d like to be wowed in all areas of hitting. Just saying.
  24. The numbers you list for Rodriguez don’t look that great. Unless I’m reading it wrong - he batted .214. Yes with 10 HRs, and apparently some BBs. But tell me why to ignore .214???
  25. Half of the left-handed hitters in baseball should learn to get bunt singles to the third base side. They either can’t do it or won’t do it. That’s a shame. Hits that beat these annoying, ubiquitous shifts are my favorite plays in baseball in this shift-happy era
